  • When I first learned that tonight'sSt. Patrick's Day broadcast of American Idol would be country-themed, I admit I was bummed. I waskind of hoping for a Celtic theme, personally. How about Pub Songs Night? Sea ShantyNight? Thin Lizzy Night (imagine Adam Lambert singing "Jailbreak") orPogues Night (a slurry "Fairytale Of New York" by Megan Corkrey)? Ormaybe bring Bono on to be a mentor or something? At the very least the Idol stylists could have made the top 11 all wear green (orrisk being pinched by Paula Abdul, in the same manner in which she wanted tosquish David Archuleta's head lastseason). Or the producers could have invited back Irish also-ran Carly Smithson(this time, it would have been appropriate and I wouldn'thave protested). But no. There was no St. Paddy'stheme tonight, which was enough to make me cry into my green beer.

Tonight's countrytheme was also odd because this is the first AmIdolseason in a long time that's featured no straight-up country contestants in the finals.

  • Last year, I praised a So You Think Can Dance results-show performance by a then-relatively unknown pop diva named Lady GaGa. I was going positively gaga for this albino-wigged, Crystal Carrington-shoulderpadded, Jane Fonda-leotarded, lightning-bolt-faced, LCD-spectacled show-woman, and I predicted big things for her.

    See my original blog here.

However, judging from the message board activity that evening way back in July, my readers did not share my gaga enthusiasm for GaGa. Comments included:

"Lady GaGa???????That's a lady??? My, how times have changed. It's no wonder the 'kids' are all screwed up these days with something like that to look up to. Terrible, and she can't even sing. WEIRD. She made me want to VOMIT. I hope SYTYCD gets better, or should I say, normal guests next season. That was really disgusting."

"Thank God I have a DVR...that was just too strange for me..."

"Katy Perry was better then Lady GaGa, she is no David Bowie."

"Miss GaGa is something I have to get use to.

  • When Ilearned that Kanye West would be on AmericanIdol this week, my mind boggled. I was more confused by this prospect thanPaula Abdul is when she mixes up her medications. Was Kanye actually going tobe a mentor? Past celebrity mentorson various genre-specific themed episodes of Idol have included Dolly Parton, Burt Bacharach, Barry Gibb, NeilDiamond, Gwen Stefani, and Stevie Wonder, so 'Yewould certainly be in good company if that were the case...but then again, allof those people can, you know, actually SING. Kanye giving vocal pointers tothis season's American Idol hopefuls would only be appropriate, really, if thisweek's theme was Auto-Tunes Night.

As itturned out, Kanye merely performed on Wednesday'sresults show, "singing" (and I use that term loosely) his latestsingle, "Heartless." And it seemed richly ironic that after hours of ratherheartless critiques this season from the judges--during which they've berated the contestants for their pitchiness andwonky notes, and constantly

  • There was muchIdol-centric watercooler chit-chatthis morning, as there is every morning after an American Idol episode, particularly at this stage in the game whenit's down to the finals. But todaythe Idol chatter wasn't just about last night'sperformances, but also about this mysterious, ballyhooed change to the rules, aswitch-up announced tonight thatwould apparently change the show forever.

    Forever!

I had myown semi-educated guesses about what this big announcement might be. My prediction wasthe elimination process would be changed to be more like how it is on So You Think You Can Dance or America's Best Dance Crew, shows on which the outcomeis determined by a combo of viewers'votes and judges' expertise. On thoseshows the public does get its say, but the professionals possess ultimate vetopower--and therefore can rescue any of the undeserving bottom three (who "perform for their lives" to escape elimination) on thosenights when Americagets it wrong.

    Some fanswere angered by such

  • When Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew held its own Michael Jackson Night back in season 1, it was a real thriller. But tonight, when Randy's "other" show American Idol went with a Jacko theme, it was kind of just, well, bad. Sure, some contestants tonight were pretty young things, but many others just needed to beat it. And some performances were such carnage-laden trainwrecks, they almost left blood on the dancefloor, so to speak. They were less wacko Jacko and more just plain old wack.

The less-than-thrilling performances tonight should come as no surprise to longtime fans of either AmIdol or Michael Jackson, really. Remember the Beatles performances last year? Producer Nigel Lythgoe spent six seasons lobbying for Idol access to the Fab Four's (ironically once Michael-owned) catalog, but then when the contestants finally had the chance to tackle such iconic, classic material, their performances weren't so fab. George Harrison and John Lennon subsequently spun in

  • I'm beginning to realize that Jewel has an almost Madonna-like ability to reinvent and re-reinvent herself. I mean, I've barely gotten over her bizarre, seldom-discussed 2003 foray into Britney-esque pop (remember her song "Intuition"? It was in an overplayed commercial for a razor by the same name, if that jogs your memory). You know, when she suddenly went from strumming an acoustic guitar at Lilith Fair festivals to tarting it up in glitzy music videos while wearing stilettos and pleather miniskirts. It was a bit of a credibility-killing career move, one she quickly and probably wisely backed away from. (Nelly Furtado, Vanessa Carlton--if you're reading this, that could be you in a few years.)

But now, Jewel is all over reality TV. Will this professional strategy prove to be just as ill-advised?

First Jewel appeared as a guest judge on American Idol, where she not only had to keep her cool while watching the female answer to William Hung yodel her way through a tone-deaf Jewel

  • So Friday morning I woke up at the ungawdly hour 5:45am Pacific time to do a phone interview with Jay Kline--the morning DJ at WLER All Hitz Radio in Pittsburgh, and a fellow American Idol obsessive--about this week's big AmIdol developments.

Yes, it was early, but I was already as hyper and pumped-up as Paula Abdul after her morning pills. Because come on, who could sleep after Thursday night's announcement of the top THIRTEEN?

While Jay and I differed on the subject of Anoop "Dogg" Desai (I expressed love for Anoop, and Jay, well, he was just wrong), we concurred on most other matters (the greatness of Adam Lambert, the overratedness of Michael Sarver, the certifiable craziness of Tatiana Del Toro, and the dancey awkwardness of Megan Corkrey, for starters).

As for Anoop, we just agreed to disagree. Overall, it was a pretty Idolicious way to start my morning.

  • Ryan Seacrest described tonight as a "very special episode of American Idol," but he didn't mean that in a sappy Lifetime Network or Afterschool Special sort of way, or like that one disturbing "very special episode" of Diff'rent Strokes with Dudley and the creepy old man in the basement.

There were some sappy moments, and some creepy moments, however, in this...the all-important, very special Wild Card Episode in which the judges "wrested back a little control" (Ryan's somewhat foreboding words) and handpicked three more reinstated contestants to round out the final top 12. Kudos to Simon Cowell for being honest and saying the judges wouldn't be basing their decisions solely on who sang best, but would also look at this as a "casting" opportunity and therefore make sure to add some interesting "personalities" to the mix. That was fine with me...just as long as Tatiana Del Toro wasn't one of those personalities.

Tatiana would sing later, of course, but performing first was Jesse

  • So after a typicallyterrible group performance of Katy Perry's"Hot & Cold" that left me, well, cold (please, Idol producers, do not make the contestants warble the phrase "PMS" ever again!), RyanSeacrest wasted no time in sending Lil'Rounds through to the top 12 tonight. Well, duh.

Lil' seemeda lil' surprised herself--butfrankly, nobody else was. Lil' Roundswas probably the only of last night'scontestants that was considered a bona fide shoo-in. The other two slots were still very much up up for grabs.

The nextresults announcement was equally unshocking: The elimination of Arianna "TheLoser Does Not Take It All" Afsar. The Abba-mangling also-ran barely evenblinked upon hearing the news, and went straight back to her stool.

TaylorVaifanua seemed equally unfazed by her own subsequent elimination. Guess Taylorand Kara DioGuardi will never get that chance to go shopping together, afterall.

Then it wasjudgment time for the unabashedly dorky Alex Wagner-Trugman. In aresponse to Ryan's

  • Well, this season the powers-that-be at American Idol have come to their senses and reinstated the popular old "wild card" policy, much to the delight of Idol-worshippers everywhere who became over-eagerly overjoyed by a rampant season 7 rumor that five semi-finalists would be brought back as wild cards to compete for a spot on the American Idols Live 2008 concert tour.

That rumor turned out to be frustratingly unfounded (and oh, I still dream of how last season might've panned out if Danny Noriega and Josiah Leming had been given second chances). But the excitement such gossip generated--along with the success of past wild-card picks like Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson, and the perhaps unavoidable realization that sometimes 24 million voters CAN be wrong (the most glaring example of such, um, wrongness: Kris Allen over Megan Corkrey???)--has inspired Fox to bring back the wild card round this Thursday, March 5.

Or perhaps the show's producers are just realizing that the way they've
