On "American Idol" Season 12's top five night, contestant Amber Holcomb performed "Without You," a power ballad that judge Mariah Carey once famously covered--and scored a massive hit with--in 1994. At the end of her critique, Mariah declared, "Thank you, Harry Nilsson, for writing a great song!"
There was only one problem: Harry Nilsson didn't write "Without You."
Last night was a very nostalgic night "American Idol," as the top five results show featured performances by old-school "Idol" favorites Fantasia and Clay Aiken and well as a surprise appearance by former judge Paula Abdul, who reclaimed her center seat at the judging table and looked right at home. Yay!
It was such a feelgood episode, in fact, that my "The Day After" cohost Matt Whitfield and I were barely even sad when the show ended on a bummer note as Janelle Arthur was sent home. Paula returns! [photo: Michael Yarish/Fox]Obviously, it's a "girls' season" on "American Idol" this year. And never was that more true than on the series' top five results show this throwback Thursday--when the judge who's forever "Idol's" girl, the one and only Paula Abdul, made a surprise appearance, sat back in her comfy old judging chair, and reminded viewers of those old-school "Idol" days when the judges actually all got along.
Last night, the "American Idol" top five show had a "Divas" theme, but the biggest divas were the ones behind the judging table, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, catfighting as usual. (Simmer down, sirs!) Onstage, the top five girls were actually less than divalicious, making my "The Day After" cohost Matt Whitfield and I question if this whole "girls' season" thing was such a good idea after all.

photo: Ray Mickshaw/FoxNow with all those pesky boys out of the way, "American Idol" continued apace this week with the final five girls (the first all-female top five in "Idol" history), and so of course there was a "Divas" theme. But none of the girls really brought Mariah-style divaliciousness to the show, contrary to what the ridiculous amount of overpraise from the judges might have had viewers believe. (Seriously, these girls were getting more standing ovations than Joshua Ledet on a good night. I practically had flashbacks to the nicey-nice Steven Tyler/Jennifer Lopez "Idol" years.) However, during the episode--the first half of which featured a "Song From the Year You Were Born" theme, before moving on to diva songs in the second hour--there were a couple memorable moments that separated the women from the girls.
photo: Kristen (Jower-Ho) ShafferFantasia--one of the greatest contestants from "American Idol," who is about to release her excellent fourth album, Side Effects of You--incredibly won the show nine years ago, and much has changed since her Season 3 victory. Until recently, Season 3 had been the most girl-powered season in "Idol" history (the only season to feature a girl-vs.-girl finale and an all-female top three), and soon after that season, "Idol" became a very male-dominated affair. But now, in Season 12, we have an all-female top five, which makes it so fitting that Fantasia is returning to the show to perform this Thursday.
Swinging by Yahoo! while in L.A. this week to discuss her evolving career and the evolution of "Idol," Fantasia was reluctant to name her favorite Season 12 contestant, but she did coyly remark, "Let's just say there's a young lady on there that's right around the corner from me, South Carolina [Editor's note: She means Candice Glover, y'all], and I think she's pretty good!" But Fantasia had advice for all five girls, telling them, "Keep good people with you, stay focused, and don't let the industry or anyone try to change you. Be who you are, and actually enjoy this."
