Reality Rocks
  • On Wednesday night, shortly after Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik, and Chris Rene sang one last time to convince America's voters they're worth $5 million, the "X Factor" judges spoke to the press about their contestants' chances and the show's future. Simon Cowell seemed fairly confident about his girl Melanie; L.A. Reid still had faith in Chris; Nicole Scherzinger had hope for Josh; and neutral judge Paula Abdul had love for them all, of course. And all four judges seemed confident that, with a few tweaks here or there, "The X Factor" will go on to have a successful second season. But none of them were 100 percent sure who was going to win Season 1.

Check out the judges' interviews now, before Thursday night's big reveal!

  • Earlier in the week, it was announced that the final three "X Factor" contestants would sing with "superstars" this Wednesday--an exercise, I assume, intended to help the finalists elevate their game, kind of like when the "So You Think You Can Dance" contestants pair up with allstars. Or maybe it was all just to elevate ratings. Anyway, soon all the Interweb was aflutter with speculation as to who the A-list duet partners would be. Melanie Amaro had been seemingly set up for a Mariah Carey pairing all season long, ever since Mariah's flight to Simon's Judges' House in France got rained out, and certainly since Melanie started bombarding Mimi with love-tweets all over Twitter. Chris Rene would have been a natural pairing with any big rapper out there, or maybe an R&B-crossover star like Bruno Mars. And I was personally rallying for a Josh Krajcik/Foo Fighters collabo, since Josh's Foos cover was one of his best performances of the season.

  • photo: FoxJosh Krajcik may not have this season's "X Factor" competition in the bag. Melanie Amaro, arguably the technically best singer on the show, is clearly being groomed by her mentor Simon Cowell to be the American Leona Lewis, and recovering addict Chris Rene has been a major fan favorite ever since he auditioned with his autobiographical "Young Homie" (which recently surpassed 10 million views on YouTube). With all three singers representing very different genres and very different fanbases, and none of them ever having been in the bottom two before, it seems like any of them could win this thing. But it's Josh who I think really deserves this victory, and I have a feeling that victory will indeed be his. Here's why.

  • Arriving at Poppycock's Holiday HearthSunday night, I had the thrill of attending "America's Got Talent" dandy Prince Poppycock's Holiday Hearth bash, a "private" affair (well, it wasn't that private, since it was streamed live on the Interweb) that took place at the good Prince's manor and was also attended by local L.A. artist Cassidy Haley and burlesque goddess (and VH1 'The Cho Show" sidekick) Selene Luna.

Chez Poppycock was a wild winter wonderland, filled not with visions of sugarplums but with much more exotic eye-popping delights like ruffled Poppycock dolls, ten-foot-tall champagne bottles, creepy clown masks, giant feather fans, powdered wigs, and actual cocks (stuffed roosters, you dirty-minded readers!). I honestly could not have imagined a more foppishly festive environment to celebrate the season. Prince Poppycock was, unsurprisingly, the perfect gentlemanly host.

  • While the first U.S. season of Simon Cowell's "The X Factor" certainly had its share of amazing musical performances, often the focus this season was not on the talented contestants themselves, but on scandals, shockers, and controversies. (This is how the U.K. version of the show, in tabloid-obsessed Britain, has always operated.) From the judges' petty infighting to claims of behind-the-scenes shenanigans to crazy onstage meltdowns, "The X Factor USA" brought the drama week after week. Was this the best way to launch the career of a singer who'll be handed a $5 million record deal? Honestly, I'm not so sure--I personally would have preferred a little more focus on the music. But hey, I'll admit it...all this drama made for great television.

  • Adam's new singleEarlier this week, Adam Lambert tweeted a link to a photo of the new artwork for his single "Better Than I Know Myself," along with a 27-second audio snippet...and Twitter's infrastructure pretty much collapsed. Well, now the good people over at Soundcloud headquarters better batten down the hatches and back up their servers, because the FULL audio of "Better Than I Know Myself" is out...and I suspect that compulsive repeat listenings from thousands of giddy Glamberts might be enough to break the Interweb itself. I know I certainly plan to have the song on a constant loop this weekend, trigger-fingeredly hitting the "play" button repeatedly, like a hungry rodent in a lab experiment whacking a lever to get another food-pellet fix. Or, to utilize a different metaphor/simile, I plan on listening to "Better Than I Know Myself" until I know it better than I know the back of my excitedly typing hand.

  • Last night's top four "X Factor" results show may not have been this season's most dramatic, with the semifinals elimination of perennial underdog Marcus Canty being much more expected than that of Drew Ryniewicz or Rachel Crow (and with Marcus himself, class act that he is, taking the news in his usual stride). But now that it's down to just three contestants--Chris Rene, Josh Krajcik, and Melanie Amaro--next week's big finale is sure to be SUPER-suspenseful. All three are talented, and all three represent very different musical genres and very different fanbases, so really, any of them could take the title (and the $5 million record contract) next Thursday.
