Cowell Confirms: Whitney Houston Was in Running to Be ‘X Factor’ Judge

Since it was announced last week that judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger were leaving "The X Factor," speculation and gossip has run rampant about which singing superstars will replace them in Season 2, with such A-list names as Beyonce and Mariah Carey making the mix. But now Simon Cowell has confirmed that he was actually campaigning to have the late Whitney Houston be a new "X Factor" judge.

Whitney Houston died Saturday, suddenly and shockingly, at age 48. Reacting to the terrible news,  Simon told Britain's Sky TV: "There are always moments in your life that are horrible to remember. The day John Lennon died, or Elvis Presley, and recently Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson--and now Whitney. It's just really, really horrible."

That same night, calling in to his friend Piers Morgan's CNN talk show, an "absolutely devastated" Simon revealed: "We were ironically going to meet on Monday and of course, one of the names we were going to be talking about in that meeting as a possible mentor on the new series of 'X Factor' was going to be Whitney Houston....Given the choice, I would have liked to have taken her under my wing as well, because she would have been the ultimate, ultimate mentor to any contestant coming on the show."

Simon added: "I always looked to Whitney and Mariah, that they had this sort of fantastic rivalry, but massive respect for each other. But for me, Whitney [versus] Mariah--ever since I've been doing this job, particularly doing talent shows over the last 10 years, the number one singer anyone wanted to emulate, if they really wanted to be a superstar, it was always Whitney. We would hear Whitney songs over and over again. She was the benchmark. She truly was."

Speaking of the last time he saw Whitney, when she performed three years ago on "The X Factor U.K.," Simon told Piers: "There was more excitement  about Whitney performing than any other artist we'd had before....the crowd went crazy."

"I am absolutely devastated by this news, " Simon said. "I am so sad for her. She was one of the greatest superstars of all time, one of the greatest voices in our lifetime we're likely ever to hear."

like witnessing the end of a long, slow-motion car crash. Very sad but not very surprising.

I agree and the article in LA Times yesterday was talking about how her entourage were trying to keep the press away from her on Thursday afternoon when she was acting erratically and doing handstands. Her daughter finally had to take her away from the press conference. Nobody is addressing the elephant in the room. Must we always cannonize these "stars" whose glory days were 20 years ago. Drugs are killing these guys - Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, while their people and the press turn a blind eye. For a country so set in values, why isn't this being addressed?

Values died decades ago, along with morals.

Simon, either sign Beyonce for X-Factor or bring Paula back. Mariah will be the end of that show. Get down to 3 judges only and hire a good host.

Really tired of hearing all these people waxing poetic about how they felt so bad and were going to help her, blah blah blah...I watched Piers Morgan last night and it was nauseating to hear Cowell and him go on about how shocked and stunned they were. These two are making bazillions off of kids every day that have the same stars in their eyes that she did so long ago. They knew she was having trouble, as so many others did, and they stood by and watched and did little to help. It's all about the gravy train and when the gravy stops pouring in, that's when the "shock" and "stunned" crap starts. I understand addicts can only begin their recovery when they themselves hit bottom and seek out a plan to get help but, seriously, each person in the entertainment industry that allow the slimeballs who push drugs and alcohol on people to squeeze one more drop of song, video, CD, etc. to pay for their Bentley, houses, and other crap they don't need...well, you are the ones with blood on your hands!
The only person I feel sadness for is her daughter; she will grow up with a loser for a father and no mother. Now THAT is sad.

what a load of crap, Whitney was a grown-up, an addict who wouldn't accept help. These men weren't her babysitter.

I hate to say it but yeah, she did it to herself. She seek out help alright, went to rehab but went back to drugging afterwards. What a waste of life. She was such a beautiful human being.

it is a complete waste of a human life. She should have got more help with her drug issuses. Just think If she could have received more help what her concerts would be like. RIP Whitney, I will miss u

If he wanted her as a judge, he should have gotten her for season 1 instead of Nicole.
      • Karma 3 months ago
EXACTLY!! Simon Cowell is lying about wanting her as a judge. Cowell, along with most of the Hollywood Entertainment community didn't want to touch Whitney due to her drug problem. Now I believe he might have considered Mariah, and he's going after Janet, but he was NEVER approaching Whitney! Cowell, the sick son of a bytch that he is is using this claim of approaching Whitney for publicity for his horrid show, the X Factor. PATHETIC AND TASTELESS!!!

Cowell was also heard saying "Maybe working her contarct so that she would be paid in rocks wasn't the greatest idea"

Ssssoooo, you were going to talk about asking her at a meeting that hasn't occurred yet.........as if whoever you ask will undoubtedly say "yes!"........smart move Simon, drop the name of a deceased person, so she can't reject you after the debacle that was the X-Factor U.S.A. Now that's opportunism!

I don't know why any successful artist would want to put their career in Simon's hands. He treats them a lot different than Clive Davis treats people he has worked with.
      • ice 3 months ago
Clive Davis is one of the worst for using young artist and throwing them away. In public he comes off as a great guy but when he passes and people can tell the truth about him... LOOKOUT as he is a monster...
      • wggirl 3 months ago
Summer, you might take a new look at the actual facts. You may be correct, but here is one telling thing - didn't Clive Davis represent Whitney Houston? Some people, it seems, get bitten by greed and fail to look at the people they are "representing". When she walked into Clive Davis's interview and was obviously messed up, how come NO ONE (and most especially Clive) grabbed her and just refused to let her go? Just taken her somewhere and CARED for her?

I believe Simon should ask some of the great legends of music. Diana, Mary, Anita, Celine, Gladys would make the judgeship on the X Factor. It would make the claasy ofthe classiest. Whit ney great talent, but she is gone, move in another direction and get someone who knows musical talent. Even Tommy Mattola would be a great choice. Or even Babyface, he would be the ultimate of judges. Missy Elliott would also be an excellent choice for a judgeship on X Factor. Go find someone who truly knoiws music, and who knows talent when they hear it!! Time is passing by, Simon. Get the job done!!!
