Still, David concedes that he's been out of the game for just a little bit. "I think I had this image of this album maybe taking six months...but then it became very apparent that it was going to be a longer process....But the end result is, far and away, musically the most mature record that I've ever been a part of; lyrically probably the most therapeutic; and definitely, I'd have to say, my best record to date."
Yes, it's been worth the wait. While there are no "Beth"-style road-warrior songs on This Loud Morning (although a KISS reference in a David Cook interview is always a good thing), David's crazy life experiences on and off the tour bus since winning "Idol" in 2008 have deeply influenced this "loosely autobiographical" album. "There's some open wounds on this record, for sure," he says. "Believe me, I love my life, I love where I'm at, but it can't be all sunshine and flowers all the time."
A sort of concept LP about "the gestation period of a relationship from start to finish," This Loud Morning is an audio sleep cycle as well, with the opener "Circadian" about "falling asleep and escaping the day" and the closer "Rapid Eye Movement" about "waking up and realizing, damn it, [the relationship] wasn't real and I gotta deal with another day." The album's title itself reflects this. "I was a little burnt out," David says of his mindset at the start of the recording process. "I'd wake up in the morning and all I wanted to do was pull the blanket over my head and call it a day and start over. The morning was just a bit loud."
But now the album's gestation period is over, and it's time for David to seize the day. He recently performed his new single "The Last Goodbye" on "American Idol," and unsurprisingly, when he had the chance to give the Season 10 contestants some advice, he kept true to his new album's theme, telling them: "SLEEP! I'm three years into this, and I'm still playing catch-up!"
