Last week, James Durbin went home on "American Idol" after performing Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'." Apparently his sing-by-numbers version just couldn't measure up to the already-famous covers by the "Glee" cast, the "Rock Of Ages" cast, the Season 8 "Idol" cast, Steve Perry, that YouTube guy who replaced Steve Perry, et al.
But last night on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," James proved that he just chose the wrong Journey song. Teaming with his most avid "Idol" supporter, judge Randy Jackson (who, as he never lets us forget, actually used to play in Journey), James surprised "Fallon" viewers with a jam on my personal favorite Journey classic, "Any Way You Want It." And it was JUST what I wanted.
This was just awesome. So can James follow in the motorcycle-booted footsteps of fellow fourth-place "Idol" rocker Chris Daughtry, and start a band caled Durbin? With umlauts, please? "Dürbin" has a nice ring to it. And that's the way I want it.
