General Larry Platt: A Real American Idol

This week on American Idol, 62-year-old novelty rapper General Larry Platt upstaged all the "real" singers on the Atlanta auditions episode with his instantly viral hit, "Pants On The Ground." But Platt is not just some William Hungian TV clown angling for 15 minutes of YouTube fame. His real legacy in fact extends all the way back to the '60s, when he was a teenage crusader for the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia.

That's right: General Larry Platt isn't just a wannabe American Idol, he's a bona fide American hero. The man was even honored with his own holiday in Atlanta, Larry Platt Day, on September 4, 2001, for his "priceless and immeasurable contributions to society" and "his great energy and commitment to equality and the protection of the innocent and for his outstanding service to the Atlanta community and the citizens of Georgia."

On that fateful day, the Georgia General Assembly declared: "For the past 40 years, Larry Platt has given of himself in service to the people of the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, and the nation...Larry Platt merits the highest recognition for his many valuable contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his dedication to the struggle for equality and human rights."

Platt was actually a student of Martin Luther King Jr. back in the day, which makes the timing of his sudden fame quite interesting, given that next Monday is MLK Day. In the early '60s when he was only 16 (see the 16-year-old Platt in the photograph here; he's the one on the far left), he worked with activist groups like the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and Southern Christian Leadership Conference to fight racial segregation in the South. He was even beaten while participating in the infamous "Bloody Sunday" protest march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama.

During that time, according to an article in USA Today about the unlikely "overnight celebrity," Platt actually got his "General" nickname from prominent civil rights leader Reverend Hosea Williams, who was impressed by his valiant efforts. The General remains a community activist to this day, working with the United Youth Adult Conference (a volunteer organization set up to find missing children in the Atlanta area) and fighting public foreclosures.

Somewhat sadly, General Larry Platt may now be forever better known as the "Pants On The Ground Guy," rather than for his years of activism. But if his American Idol fame draws more public attention to his heroic past and what he's stood for all his life, then in way his audition will be far more important and impactful than the one by whoever ends up winning American Idol this year.

Plus, admit it: "Pants On The Ground" is a darn good song. Really, every day should be Larry Platt Day.

I saw his performance on Youtube today, it was quite excellent. The lyrics are catchy and the message is good. For someone his age to generate such a trendy message is indeed quite exceptional. That he is also a civil rights icon just teaches all of us not to judge people by our perceptions.

Thumbs up for the General. Now that we got the boots on the ground in Afghanistan and lord knows how many pants are on the ground in Haiti, Let's all do what we can to get the pants off the ground!

I thought this show didn't allow anyone over 29 to audition ? But I'm glad they made an exception in this case. I think, that for this year's first show involving those that make the final 30, or however many it is, they should end that show by bringing this gentleman out, tell the story that we have just read, maybe a little more, and honor the guy for being a genuine American Idol of the first order. If American Idol doesn't do this, maybe Ellen would - heck, maybe American Idol AND Ellen should do this! Then let him close with a "Pants on The Ground" the whole audience can get into! He would love it, and so would the entire viewing audience. Hopefully, he would be paid enough, or then be able to earn enough in the future, to help him be comfortable, and allow us and many more to see and feel his joy.

Great message Larry. I'm tired of seeing all of those kids with skinny jeans with saggy butts. It looks absolutely ridiculous. Looking like a fool

an amazing man with an incredible background and the best song ive heard on american idol so far!!! its true that it will never be forgotten that song is now stuck in my head for the rest of the week at least!! WAY TO GO GENERAL!! oh and great message ppl really need to get with the times and buy a belt. "pants on the ground" is sooooo out and extremly tacky! i hope that he gets rewarded not only for this 15 min of fame.. i would so buy his single if someone signed him even just for the one song .. it would be a nice way to repay him for everything he has done for our country.

My only question here is how come only simon noticed that he was overaged for the audition? Is there any screening committee in this AI? I thought these Americans are very strict in their applications. Don't get me wrong here, I like the guy specially when this article about him being a local hero. I am just questioning their screening process about the age limit.

'bout time somebody made a performance pointing out the stupidity of what was called "jailin" in Watts back in the late 70's. Wearing pants down below the waist is something that came about because guys would come back home after getting out of the slammer and finding out that they had lost so much weight in jail that their pants didn't fit. It wasn't a fashion statement it was reality. General Larry Platt has my vote and I would like to see them change the rules for American Idol because the cut off age of 28 sure discriminates against an awful lot of talent that father time has cheated out their 15 minutes of fame.

So cal kid- Your comment was rude!!! It is NOT just "negros" who need to pull their pants up!! As a young "white" woman, I believe his message goes for ALL of the young who believe that saggy pants is cool. And your comment about their "illegitmate" kids. Well,,,,you should be ashamed of yourself!!! Your comment was inconsiderate and childish.....maybe General Platt should make a rap about people who want to ridicule others because of their color!!
General Platt- thank you for everything you have done for our nation. Your act of service is a real gift and takes immense courage. God Bless You!!!

Just a couple of comments here. First off, #409 Alfred, obviously this was set up in advance, the show was being taped in Atlanta, and the General is from Atlanta, I really don't think that he slipped through the cracks, he was meant to perform. Check out the finale, I bet he headlines the show. And for comment #420 Ernest. I love it when people complain about others intelligence but show none themselves. When you combine the words you and are the word you get is you're, not your.

General Larry is AWESOME! He has served America yet again with a vital public service announcement:
GET PANTS OFF THE GROUND AMERICA!
Sometime you gotta meet people where they're at and he used rap, the language of the streets, to get his message out! Brilliant!
