Kelly Clarkson’s Super Bowl Performance Truly Idol-Worship-Worthy

photo: Ezra Shaw/ Getty ImagesLast year at the Super Bowl, Christina Aguilera's national anthem performance was a disaster on an international scale. And this year, Xtina's new "The Voice" castmate Kelly Clarkson admitted on Twitter that she was nervous about her own big Super Bowl debut. "Just finished rehearsing the anthem in Indy…wow, I'm actually really nervous about singing at the Super Bowl ha! Here's hoping I nail it and don't screw it up!" she tweeted Friday.

Then, on the day of the game, Kelly anxiously tweeted: "Literally left my wardrobe at the hotel in Louisiana and my tour manager had to run back and get it. Now we're on the plane headed for the Super Bowl but that was a close one! I'm not sure if I could have pulled off spanx and heels while singing the anthem :)"

These were surprising confessions of nerves from a woman who came to fame singing in front of millions of viewers (and Simon Cowell) week after week. But of course, Kelly never faltered on "Idol," and suffice to say she absolutely did not screw it up when she sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XLVI. The American Idol did America proud. (And she looked great, too--it was a good thing her "wardrobe malfunction" crisis was averted!)

Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton start the showBut of course, it was all about "The Voice," not "Idol," today at the Super Bowl, since "The Voice's" Season 2 premiere airs tonight right after the big game. The Bowl's pre-game festivities kicked off with "Voice" judge Blake Shelton singing "America The Beautiful" with his wife Miranda Lambert (who, like Kelly, will be a guest mentor on "The Voice" this year), and "Voice" judge Cee Lo Green is even rumored to be joining Madonna in the half-time show.

photo: Chris O'Meara/ APHowever, it was Kelly who really gave the performance of a champion. Her stunning national anthem was just the latest in a string of recent career coups for the Original Idol, following her new "Voice" gig, the catapulting of her single "Stronger" to number two on the Billboard singles chart, a fantastic "Saturday Night Live" appearance, and her new chart record as the "Idol" alum with the most top 10 hits ever.

Any "Voice" contestant that Kelly mentors this season will be very lucky to ever enjoy a career as long and impressive as Kelly's. This American Idol truly is a national treasure.

Yahoo's stories suck. And their guidelines suck for leaving comments!

I have to agree with most of the comments on here that K. Clarkson is truly a STAR. There are others out there with lots of money and fame who do not hold a candle to K. Clarkson status as a true star. A true STAR has a HEART of GOLD. Miss. Clarkson if you read any of these comments thank you for your contribution to make our Country Great.

She's awesome, I thought so from the first time I saw her on idol, she's a true talent!

Awesome job from Kelly Clarkson. She can really sing but didn't make the song all about her vocal abilities and stayed true to the anthems style. Kelly looked beautiful doing it, too. Loved her simple classy outfit and hair. I also enjoyed the choir.

It would have been okay to wear jeans too. This is America and clothes don't make someone patriotic. I bet her "nice classy" suit was made in China or something. Give me a break.

The best part was the people cheering when they showed the troops. :)

I take care of 4 mentally disabled Vets on weekends. As per military protocall we all stood at parade rest during the anthem. When they showed our troops, we broke proto & gave them a giant salute. We all had tears in our eyes

At last someone who knows how to sing our national athem, and not try to put some hidden meaning into it. I am very tired of suppose singers who for what ever reason can't or want do it justice. So I say hooray for her.

Bravo! Even as OUR Nation Anthem needs no help to send chills down a spine...you really brought it home!

Finally, a truly respectful rendition of our National Anthem. She remembered the words, didnt twist it all up into some pop song with ridiculously stretched notes. Class act, great job !

Kelly, you're rendition of the Anthem has made us all proud! It was most certainly refreshing to hear someone sing it without trying to put their own stamp on it. Fantastic!

Not surprised one bit...she is amazing. Idol has rarely picked the best each season but, with Kelly...they certainly did.

Tsk Tsk, so much hate! Is it that hard for some of you to just admit that she did a heck of a lot better than the past performances? My Lord, give her some credit! It takes balls and talent to sing that in front of MILLIONS of people and knowing how harsh you will be judged on everything from weight, hair, or even if you breath wrong! The girl did good and you know it! Everyone sits there waiting for her to either mess up or find something they can pick at. So what if she is not plastic and a size two! So what if she didn't blow your mind when she sang, but come on, would it kill you to just say "good job Kelly"? P.S. If it would kill you to be nice, please do it and so the rest of us won't have to hear you later. lol ;)

I actually didn't like it -- is that so hard for you to believe?!?!?
      • shyla 3 months ago
No it's not but doesn't mean you need to sit on her and bash her. At least give her credit for having the balls to get up there and do it! Something very FEW people can do.
      • jz 3 months ago
but you didn't say that - you said that we had to agree that she did better than past performances - and I don't agree with that. I do think it takes guts to get up there, and I thought she was good, but not great - and certainly not better than "the past performances"

Kelly, you are a true patriot. My,my, it has been so long since we have heard someone sing the anthem the way it is intended to be sung. You and the children, the NFL should sign you for life. U go girl!
