The star-crossed and unlikely love story between "American Idol" contestant Paul McDonald and Twilight actress Nikki Reed--who met when the "Idol" Season 10 cast attended the Red Riding Hood movie premiere earlier this year, and married only six months later--continues apace this week, with a new twist. This Monday, the newlyweds premiered their new love duet, "Now That I've Found You" (music by Paul, lyrics by Nikki, vocals by both), on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM morning show. Paul also tweeted a photo of the single's cover art, with an announcement that the song will soon be on iTunes. It's Paul's first official recording since he left "Idol" in eighth place back in April.
The song is very sweet, Paul's vocals sound great (he has what they call in this business a "recordable voice," and also a very recognizable one), and Nikki's backup complements him surprisingly well. The couple's folksy duet was recorded just three days ago with veteran producer Andre Harris, who has worked with mostly R&B acts (Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Chris Brown, Usher) as well as "Idol" alums Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia.
It's unclear whether this is just a one-off recording, or if the Reed-McDonalds plan to become a musical duo a la Sonny & Cher. (Or hey, maybe they can make a From Justin To Kelly-style movie, called From Paul To Nikki. Or...maybe not.) But it's possible that they'll keep making beautiful music together, as Nikki told Seacrest, "[Paul] is really supportive and encourages everything, so he wants to be a super team. I'm a little more shy. We've done some open mics together. I probably will end up doing it."
Either way, it's nice to hear Paul in his element here, doing what he does best: raspy, homespun Americana. He's the Americana Idol, if you will. Getting any new music from the guy, solo or accompanied, is reason enough to do a McDonald Two-Step happy dance.
