President Barack Obama became the latest viral video sensation last Thursday after he sang a couple snippets of Al Green's classic "Let's Stay Together" at a Democratic fundraising event at Harlem's Apollo Theater. Al Green himself was there, and Al told TMZ that he thought Obama was "terrific" and "nailed" the song. That's all fine and good, but what's really important here is...what do the "American Idol" judges think of Obama's vocal skills?
Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson, along with "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, appeared on "The Tonight Show" last Friday, and when Jay Leno asked them to critique the president's impromptu Al cover, Steven raved, "That was great! Very soulful. It's good to see that there's a president now that has the whatwithal to sing something like that." Randy then howled, "Prez, yo, listen: What we should do is drop a single on you. You'd be the only president in the world with a record out! We can call Jay-Z! Let's go!"
As of this writing, the prez hasn't taken Randy up on that offer--but you never know, so watch this space. And hey, while Barack may be too old to audition for "American Idol" now, he can always try out for "The X Factor" or "The Voice" one day, after he retires from politics.
