One of the more awkward (and amusing) moments of this Monday's episode of "The Voice" came when Adam Levine was critiquing contestant Cassadee Pope's performance of a Michelle Branch song, and he used most of his airtime to quite harshly critique legendary Hollywood rock club the Roxy. "We used to open for Michelle Branch," the Maroon 5 frontman grumbled, "and I remember we opened for her at the Roxy and they didn't even give us a dressing room. I hate the Roxy. I'll never play there again!"
When Cassadee, a former frontwoman for the emo-rock band Hey Monday (who played the Roxy as recently as 2010), meekly attempted to defend the club, Adam silenced her with: "The Roxy's horrible; don't ever go there. They screwed us over, and now they're paying for it."
Wow, years later, after selling millions of albums and becoming a massive TV star, Adam's still fuming about not getting his own dressing room back in the day? And here I was thinking that Christina Aguilera was the diva on "The Voice"! Is that really what Adam was so mad about, or was there a more serious reason for his out-of-the-blue rant?
Anyhoo, the folks at the Roxy could have been angry about Adam's bold statement, but in this any-publicity-is-good-publicity age, they decided to have a little fun with the situation instead, switching up their marquee immediately after Monday's West Coast "Voice" broadcast:
Well played, Roxy. Well played.
Roxy owner Nic Adler told Yahoo!'s Reality Rocks that he was genuinely surprised by Adam's anti-Roxy remarks, and insisted that the club never "screwed over" Maroon 5--monetarily or otherwise. "Maroon 5 played the Roxy at least five times," he said. "[Adam's previous band] Kara's Flowers played there like every weekend. I use Maroon 5 as an example of a hard-working band that played the Sunset Strip and played the clubs and blew up. And so when he said that...you know, the Roxy has no control over dressing rooms. If Michelle Branch is playing, it's Michelle Branch's show. And if her management says, 'I want Michelle in this dressing room and I want her band in this other dressing room,' we're at the mercy of the headliner. For a band to think dressing rooms define how we treat bands is crazy."
Ironically, Rozzi Crane--the first act signed to Adam's label, 222 Records--is playing the Roxy next week, on a bill with "Voice" alum Lily Elise. But assuming that Adam decides to show up, and assuming that the Roxy's new marquee is truth in advertising, he'll finally have a dressing room to relax in while he's there.
