Scotty McCreery Almost Had to Go Gaga on ‘Idol’
Season 10 "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery took to Twitter this weekend to dish with fans about his experience on the show, and among his many amusing tweets was a confession that he was almost forced to sing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" — a song he didn't know — at his second audition.
"The song everybody in Milwaukee had to learn? 'Bad Romance' by Lady Gaga. Hahah…They tell you, you may or may not have to sing it, but its required you know it if they ask you to sing it," the sweet country kid from North Carolina tweeted. "[Producers] asked me to sing Bad Romance…. smh.
"I started into those rah rah's and then stopped midway through and told them 'This aint on my country station back home, I don’t know this'...They busted out laughing and said they just wanted to hear a country boy sing Lady Gaga, lol."
Scotty obviously advanced to the next round, and this wasn't the last time Scotty was involved in an awkward Gaga moment on "Idol." On his season's top four episode, Mother Monster herself was the guest mentor, and she spooked Scotty out so much, with her suggestion that he basically make love to his microphone, that he ended up kissing his cross pendant in fear and begging God for forgiveness.
But Scotty clearly has a good sense of humor about the whole thing. At a concert last month at the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival in California, he even sang a bit of "Bad Romance" while sharing this audition anecdote, before shrugging and saying, "Lady Gaga? For real? Not me, not Scotty…Three words, y'all: I AM COUNTRY."
