TLC claims no affiliation, but understandably isn't making any effort to have the footage taken down, since it serves as brilliant viral marketing for Kat's show. The video was in fact first uploaded to YouTube three whole years ago, but didn't receive a wide audience until the network sent the link out this morning, encouraging fans to share it. It's unclear why this video was made, or who shot and edited it, or why it was never promoted before today. But according to Radar Online, it was filmed right before the release of the then-22-year-old Gaga's debut album, The Fame, when Gaga was just another aspiring superstar living in Los Angeles.
"I worked with New Kids On The Block last night--it was rad!" Gaga (who once opened for NKOTB on tour) gushes adorably to Kat as they make small talk during the session.
Gaga may have been unknown at the time, but she still looks the part of a pop star here, wearing one of her signature platinum wigs and blue Spandex leggings. But her style is certainly more innocent and tame compared to looks she's rocked more recently, and it's interesting/ironic that when Kat asks Gaga what Germanotta family thinks about her tattoos, Gaga replies, "When they saw my first one, they had, like, a frickin' heart attack!"
In part 2 of the footage, Gaga even reveals that she cried when she showed one of her tatts to her disapproving, close-knit family. "Then I had a frickin' heart attack, because I felt bad for not telling them I was going to do it. I was crying, saying, 'I'm really sorry!' And my mom was like, 'What's wrong with you? Why do you do that?'"
I have to wonder what Lady Gaga's mama thinks of this footage...or what she thinks of her daughter's much crazier image these days, which goes way beyond mere tattoos to include prosthetic horns, sirloin sheath dresses, and manly Macchio sideburns.
The "L.A. Ink" finale airs tonight, Thursday, on TLC at 10pm. But I'm just waiting for more Gaga footage to surface, so she can get her own reality show already.
