‘X Factor’ Armageddon! Abdul, Scherzinger & Jones All Not Returning For Season 2

Simon & Paula at the first "X Factor" taping [photo: Fox]It's a regular mass "X"-odus at Fox this week. Following reports earlier Monday that host Steve Jones and judge Nicole Scherzinger were on the outs over at "The X Factor," Monday night brought the even more gob-smacking news that Simon Cowell's old "American Idol" crony, the one and only Paula Abdul, would also not be returning for Season 2. "Shocked to see Simon has fired Paula Abdul, Nicole and Steve from the X-Factor," Simon's former "Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe tweeted Monday evening, echoing many fans' sentiments.

Actually, neither Steve nor Nicole's departures were that surprising. Both had been unpopular with viewers--Steve for his perceived rudeness when trying to force the show's pacing or deal with sobbing child contestants; Nicole for her wishy-washiness and fondness for vulgar, seemingly PCD-inspired productions--and both had been on the receiving end of Simon's on-camera wrath on multiple occasions. But the news of Paula's exit, first broken by Deadline.com and later confirmed by sources to Yahoo!, was a jaw-dropper of Rachel Crow-esque proportions. After all, there were many, many things that just did not work during "The X Factor USA's" troubled inaugural season, but the Simon/Paula chemistry was not one of them, in my opinion.

Yes, the classic "Saula" pairing was actually my favorite element of "The X Factor" last year, and I'd always assumed that Paula was Simon's pet and had total job security on this show; Simon simply seemed to have her back. But I guess I assumed wrong. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Simon believes that the judging panel needs more star power next season (fueling rumors that Mariah Carey will finally join the cast), so maybe the nostalgic reunion of him and his former "Idol" sidekick just didn't quite bring in the bottom-line ratings he'd hoped for.

THR also reports that none of the three ousted "X Factor" castmates left the show voluntarily (although E! reports that Nicole quit to focus on her music, and, presumably, her long-delayed album). And that makes me feel especially sad for Paula. Neither of her solo reality television ventures, Bravo's "Hey Paula" and CBS's "Live To Dance," were exactly ratings juggernauts, and she always seemed so appreciative of the opportunity Simon gave her to reboot her career via "The X Factor." (Simon sometimes snarkily likened her to a very devoted, very grateful old dog.) Yes, it's true that Paula ended up playing not too prominent a role in "The X Factor" Season 1, since all of her contestants were voted off in quick succession, but that wasn't really her fault: Saddled with the Groups category in a pop age when acts like *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and the Spice Girls seem comically dated, she was just plain doomed from the start.

This, of course, is hardly the first time an "X Factor USA" cast member has been unceremoniously and very publicly dumped. Back in May 2011, another longtime Simon sidekick, original judge Cheryl Cole--after taping only a few early audition episodes--was fired, despite the fact that she'd quit "The X Factor U.K." and moved her entire life across the pond to do the American version of the show. Ironically, the rumor back then was Cheryl had been let go due to a lack of chemistry with Paula. I wonder if, when Paula witnessed Cheryl's firing firsthand, she ever imagined that she'd one day be in the same situation.

So now, as of this writing, it's just down to Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid. L.A. quit his cushy gig at Island Def Jam to join "The X Factor" (and now, as the head of "X"-affiliated label Epic Records, he has signed his three protégés: Chris Rene, Marcus Canty, and Astro), so I bet right about now he's hoping he's safe. As for who will replace Paula, Nicole, and Steve in Season 2, that's all up for speculation, but I do hope the aforementioned Nigel Lythgoe reconsiders his offer to make Paula a permanent judge on his other show, "So You Think You Can Dance." She could use the work.

      1)get rid of L.A.
      2)keep Paula
3)get rid of mentoring element as it only promotes favoritism and partiality--as well as judge bickering.

Find the most talented and weed the rest out! Willing to give it one more try, and that will likely be it.

and #4 get rid of the group category. It really sucked.
      • Sandy 3 months ago
What are you left with? American Idol!
      • Scott 3 months ago
The mentoring thing was fine, but they needed to keep the mentor's comments to a minimum and don't make it a contest between the judges. Some of the people Simon was defending after bad performances you just knew he would have ripped if he'd still been on Idol. The reason the group category sucked so bad was that it was strictly a singing competition. Bring in real bands with their own instruments - same for solo artists. If you have a guy who's a great guitar player, let THAT be his "talent" rather than singing. That's how you set it apart from Idol IMO.

Simon needs to hire some really talented, hard#$%$ judges who will tell it like it is instead of gushing over some of these non-talented contestants who were skating on hard luck stories. When they leave there, they are going to face worse than Simon and those music execs are not going to sugar-coat their criticisms. I am really happy that those three are gone. Hope they cut out the "mentoring" part and the personal lives of the contestants. I don't care about that and if they have it again for season 2, I will no longer watch. Actually, when they kept that rude little 14 year old rapper with his ugly attitude, I stopped watching.

I don't agree. These types of shows just need to get flushed to make room for somthing watchable. its total crap. I have had just about enough of the American Idol reality rip offs. I wached it in the begining but it losses its appeal after the first season. One jude is always so HIGH they say everything is wonderful another is always so anal that nothing is good enough. One always says a varyation of the "for me" statement. Got old quick. The onlything wachable is the auditions and even those seem rigged now. So stop putting money in Simons pocket, his ego is big enough and I don't think he could possibly pile on more makeup.

Change - "AI" actually is a rip off of "X Factor" - which was on first in the UK. Simon - who created both, just chose to do the American version.

He's so full of himself though I don't think he realizes this show is not going to last long.

The hard luck stories is one reason I dont watch this garbage. It seems that if you dont have one you dont get chosen. These types of shows are just overblown talent shows

Get LA out also. He has nothing for the show and he thinks he is all that but he was as bad as Nicole in judging. I did like Paula, too bad. Please get rid of LA!
      • Scott 3 months ago
LA's biggest goof was picking the worst of the guys for his final 4. He had several better ones, but it was clear LA is into rap and R&B and he went with that instead of good singers. Nicole stunk as a judge, but she at least picked the most interesting final 4 of anyone.

Simon actually has nothing for the show also. What an #$%$

LA Reid is a biased and racist jerk.

Loved Paula - hated LA. Steve Jones was the worst host I have ever seen!

Paula was actually one of the only good things going for the show

How was she a good thing??? They can pay me the same as they paid her to sit in a chair and not make any decisions.
      • MTWD 3 months ago
        Jared:
Paula has won many musical awards, such as a Grammy, 7 MTV video awards, 2 Emmy awards, and 2 People's Choice Awards. On top of all that she's had two #1 hit albums and seven #1 hit singles.

        What do you have?
      • EVA 3 months ago
MTWD ... have you ever actually LISTEN to any of her crap?
She however is a good choreographer (should stick to that) but not a good judge.

XFactor needs ALOT more help than firing the judges & that "Twitta" creep.

I long for the days of shows like Star Search. Just showcase people's talents, and say yes or no as to whether they win or lose. There needs to be no public commentary on why a judge didn't like someone. If they want to give helpful criticism to aspiring stars, do it in private. Enough with the popularity contests and celebrity egos and media circus, I just think that's high school-like behavior.

Now I must wonder about Simon's judgment. keeping LA Reed. I think he was the worst judge of all. What was sicking was all the crap they would say about a contestant and the public kenw all along who they were going to vote for. Cut the crap and vote.

These shows are getting old. They are naturally on decline. People move on...

GOOD i think simon and paula should stay everyone elso go.. start judging the talent and judging the judges. that was stupid.
    • mark  •  3 months ago
The show focused too much on the judges and not enough on the contestants. In addition the judges seemed to let better singers/performers go while keeping bad to questionable ones.I usually agreed with Simon on AI but his picks here were horrible. I stopped watching halfway through and while i may give season 2 a couple episodes, that will be the limit. Finally yes both the hack of a host and Nicole needed to go, they were horrible.
    • susanh  •  Mission, Kansas  •  3 months ago
Get rid of the racist (LA), Nicole and Steve were boring and ridiculous and needed to go, keep Paula she's at least entertaining...but as long as LA is there don't think I will be watching
    • Al Dente  •  3 months ago
the show will still fail.. I no of NO ONE who watches this show and I work with a lot of people, many friends and a large family and no one watches this. It has a very small following, most of are here posting. Sorry guys but the show will not last. There is a reason the ratings are horrible and why they are making all these changes but its not going to work.
    • carl  •  3 months ago
Keep Paula and get ride of LA
    • Tom  •  Cleveland, Ohio  •  3 months ago
whoever watches this for the judges is sh!tnuts!!! I record it, and skip through the douchebaggery, listening as little as possible. X-Factor should take American Idol's lead, and get people like Steven Tyler on his show. I actually can listen to those judges. Why LA Reid is around, after blatantly voting for his own guy, was NOT being constructively tough. It was the reason he needs to be gone, or I won't even bother recording it ever again.
    • Gregory  •  3 months ago
SMART MOVES! Nicole is too easy and too emotional for the show. Paula - I like her - but she needs to toughen up a bit also. NOW get judges that WILL JUDGE and make the show about the contestants - NOT THE JUDGES!
    • Sheila J  •  3 months ago
Paula was the only redeeming factor on this show. Otherwise I found it to be totally unwatchable and definitely will not be tuning in for another season. I'm actually kind of surprised there is going to be another season. Everyone I know stopped watching it after the first few weeks.
