Trevor Bolder, pictured left [photo: Dave M. Benett/Getty Images]Trevor Bolder, the bass player who was one of the founding members of David Bowie's legendary backing band the Spiders From Mars, died Tuesday at the age of 62, after suffering from pancreatic cancer for several years.

The English musician and record producer was also known for being a member of British rock group Uriah Heep, joining them in the late 1970s and playing with them throughout his career. He appeared on the band's most recent album, Into the Wild, in 2011, and was planning to join them for their performance at the Download Festival in June, reports NME.

The famed bassist underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer earlier this year, in which he had part of his pancreas removed. "They’ve cut out the bad bit. I’ve had a bit of chemo, got to have that, which I’m doing now, in case there’s anything hanging about,” Bolder told Classic Rock magazine in February.

Bolder played on several classic Bowie albums, including Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust

  • A great fire has gone out with the death of Ray Manzarek Monday at age 74. More than four decades after the death of Jim Morrison ended the classic lineup of the Doors, Manzarek remains the most listened-to and admired keyboard soloist in rock history...even if that legacy was one he sometimes professed not to care that much about.

"You don't make music for immortality, you make music for the moment — for the sheer joy of being alive on planet earth," he said in 2009. Manzarek may not have courted immortality, but thanks to a set of recordings destined to be rediscovered by new generations of enthusiasts for decades and centuries to come, he's going to have it conferred upon him anyway.

As fans well know, he wasn't just a great organ and piano player, but a great bass player, too — of sorts. Lonnie Mack played a bit of bass guitar on the Doors' albums, but for the most part, the configuration was the same on record as it was live: no true bass, with Manzarek more than filling in the

  • Ray Manzarek [photo: Matthew Peyton/Getty Images]Ray Manzarek, co-founder and keyboardist of legendary Los Angeles rock band the Doors, has died, according to a post on the band's official Facebook page.

According to the band's statement, Manzarek passed away Monday, May 20 at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, after a long battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74.

Manzarek formed the Doors in 1965 after meeting iconic singer/poet Jim Morrison on L.A.'s Venice Beach. Manzarek's playing was integral to the band's sound, since the band had no bass guitarist and Manzarek played most of the basslines on his keyboards.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," said founding Doors guitarist Robby Krieger. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

During their run from 1965 to their official breakup in 1973, the Doors sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. After Morrison's
