As part of the O Music Awards celebration, Andrew WK took a seat behind a kit at the Oakley Store in New York’s Times Square on June 19 at 7pm ET, and he plans to keep banging away until June 20 at 7pm, after 24 full hours of playing (broadcast in its entirety on omusicawards.com).
O Music Awards announced that he will be joined in his Herculean quest by other established drummers including Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith, the Ramones' Marky Ramone, theJonas Brothers' Nick Jonas, the Roots' ?uestlove, Hanson's Zac Hanson, and ex-Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto.
The O Music Awards have hosted other world-record attempts, including Chiddy Bang's nine-hour, 16-minute freestyle and the Flaming Lips' eight-show effort.
While Andrew WK was 20 hours into his 24-hour drumming attempt and still going strong at press time, before he picked up his sticks he told MTV News he was skeptical about his abilities to pull off the stunt.
"Despite my apparent confidence, inside I am actually a very small, trembling shell of a person, who is not only intimidated, but completely mortified and horrified by the ramifications of this challenge," he said. "When I signed up for it, I was like, 'Al right, 24 hours of drumming!' And then it started to set in: 24 hours of drumming. Just drumming for an hour — just drumming for 24 seconds — can be quite intense ...I can't even play one of my own songs on the drums all the way through without my arms burning. So let it be said, I'm not taking this lightly. I think it will push me to the very lengths of my strengths."
At 2pm, Andrew WK tweeted, "19 hours down! Only 5 more drum party hours to go!!! Thank you for the party power!"
Tweeted ?uestlove: "Man. Hats (Fros) off to @AndrewWK for drumming 24hrs straight. Drummers Go to Times Square & Give him ENERGY!"
