  • Ryan Gosling and the Backstreet Boys (Photos by L. Cohen/WireImage; Noel Vasquez/Getty Images)Hey girl, Ryan Gosling has revealed in a recent interview for his new 1940s shoot-em-up film Gangster Squad, that he missed his opportunity to become a member of the none other than the Backstreet Boys! It's no secret Gosling was a member of pop star-making machine The Mickey Mouse Club, but we didn't know 'til now just how close Gosling got to being in one of the biggest boy bands in history.

Gosling told Celebuzz, “When we were doing Mickey Mouse Club, we were living in the same place as that guy A.J. from the Backstreet Boys. So he was always talking about the Backstreet Boys… he was saying like how big they were going to be... And we were like, just shoot the ball dude. It’s never gonna happen, yeah right. Didn’t they already do that with the New Kids? You’re a little late. Cut too—I was wrong.”

When asked if Gosling regretted not jumping on the BSB train, he replied, “Can’t live in the past, that ship has sailed.” When prodded if he ever sees the Backstreet Boys, he joked,

  • Justin Timberlake (Photo: Scott Halleran)Those who have all but forgotten about Justin Timberlake as a musical powerhouse—hey, don’t laugh, his last album was in 2006, and that’s an eternity in today’s instantaneous media world—were startled on Wednesday night when the singer-cum-actor/businessman posted a cryptic tweet, promising a big announcement the following morning.

Within an hour, Timberlake was a top trend on Twitter. Thursday morning, Timberlake directed fans to a YouTube clip in which he indirectly announces his intent to create new music.

For those not paying attention--and that's pretty much all of us--this seemed to come out of nowhere. Why now, after so long? (As various outlets have pointed out, George W. Bush was president and iPhones didn't exist when we last heard new music from Timberlake.)

Theories have bounced around in the short period between his tweet and reveal; including half-humorous, half-serious musings whether he’s just gotten sick of his other pursuits, which include an avid golf hobby. There’s even the idea that his new wife Jessica Biel may have goaded him into it, although that’s unlikely.

Timberlake himself explains his decision to step away and return from the recording studio in typical superstar’s navelgazing fashion, saying that music “means more to me than anyone else in the world” and that he is “obsessive about it,” which is why, basically, he’s only released two solo albums over a decade.

  • Amy Winehouse (Photo: Fred Duval)The tragic tale of Amy Winehouse has not been laid to rest, as new details of her death scene were revealed this week. A London coroner’s court was told on Tuesday that the 27-year-old Grammy winner spent her last night drinking alone and watching videos of herself on YouTube.

According to the Daily Mail, Winehouse’s live-in security guard testified that the singer was in a good mood—"her usual bubbly self"—on the night preceding her death. He noted that she spent the evening watching TV and listening to music, and later "stayed up in her room watching YouTube clips [of herself].”

The guard noted that Winehouse had been drinking, but that he didn’t think she was "completely drunk.” He related that he hadn’t seen her watch videos of herself in a quite a while, and that she also shared some YouTube videos of a man she’d been dating with him.

  • KennaOn Saturday, Ethiopian recording artist Kenna embarked on his second climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro as part of his Summit On The Summit initiative to raise awareness of the clean water crisis. Seven hundred and 80 million people lack access to clean water.

Kenna is joined by Foster The People’s Mark Foster and 10 others for the intense 7-day, 50-mile climb up Africa’s tallest mountain.

Kenna and Foster compiled playlists of music that will help motivate the group during the trek. “It’s long days on Kilimanjaro.  The mountain is the great equalizer and its silence can be deafening.  Music, as a soundtrack to our lives, has a direct impact on our confidence and courage,” Kenna said in a statement released to Yahoo! Music. “We are climbing to fight the global clean water crisis. Sometimes, we don't pay attention to the value of music because it is so readily available, but we have found the faith to move mountains in songs from our favorites, let alone climb them.  We hope these songs can help

  • Was the Beatles’ breakup partly due to the fact that the semi-democratic band was on the verge of turning into “Paul McCartney and the Beatles”?

“John, in fact, was not the first one who wanted to leave the Beatles,” says Yoko Ono in a newly released interview. “Ringo one night with Maureen (Starkey, his first wife) came to John and me and said, well, he wanted to leave. And George was the next, and then John. Paul was the only one who was trying to hold the Beatles together. But then again, the other three felt that Paul was going to hold the Beatles together as his band. They were getting to be like Paul's band, which they didn't like.”

McCartney and Ono (Lester Cohen/WireImage/Getty Images)If John Lennon’s widow sounds a little less conciliatory and political about this than she has lately, that’s because this is the still slightly bristling Yoko Ono of 1987, who has come to us in a time machine to offer some thoughts less filtered by the passage of time. Her lengthy take on the breakup is a big chunk of a previously unpublished

  • Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas day, 65 years ago. Or, as he once put it in the liner notes for a holiday album he released back in 1996, he is “the Christmas war baby turned island boy born on the day W.C. Fields died.”

Jimmy Buffett (Rick Diamond/Getty Images)But when it comes to receiving, every day must feel like Christmas for the entrepreneurial singer, one of the world’s wealthiest musicians. The website Celebrity Net Worth has guesstimated his fortune at $400 million, which by their calculations puts him behind only Paul McCartney and Bono and ahead of Elton John and Mick Jagger.

Never mind that he hasn’t had a song in the Billboard pop Top 40 that was not a featured cameo on someone else’s single since 1979. His guest appearance on Alan Jackson’s country smash “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” nine years ago gave him a rare taste of post-1970s airplay. Otherwise, he hasn’t been able to get arrested at radio in decades. And he’s boo-hooing all the way to Margaritaville—which is, from all appearances, a multibillion dollar

  • The year 2013 will mark the 40th anniversary of the introduction of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the world—not as members of Fleetwood Mac, but as part of what we can think of as a prequel, their Buckingham/Nicks duo act. The timing may be coincidental, but there will be plenty of celebrating going on, as Fleetwood Mac heads out on the road for the first time in three years. Tickets just went on sale for a nine-week, 34-city tour that begins April 4 and includes stops at Madison Square Garden April 8 the Hollywood Bowl May 25.

Fleetwood Mac, ready for '13Nicks and Buckingham sat for separate interviews with Yahoo!, and we were fascinated to find points of convergence on certain issues and divergence on others. For instance, they agree that they’re getting along better than they have in many years. They differ on why that is—but with these two, and the harmonic tension that has always played into fans’ fascination with Fleetwood Mac, would you want it any other way?

Buckingham put it this way, on the

By Jane Lee SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Humor may not always translate well, but Jon Stewart is picking up millions of fans in China, where his gloves-off political satire is refreshing for many in a country where such criticism is a rarity - especially when directed at their own leaders. A recent segment on North Korea scored over 4 million views on microblogger Sina Weibo, and even stodgy state broadcaster CCTV has used Stewart's "The Daily Show" in a report, though they wouldn't let a Chinese version of him near their cameras. ...
