As Avril Lavigne prepares to celebrate her 29th birthday on September 27, she's asking her fans for a generous birthday gift. But the gift isn't for her – it's actually to support programs for young people living with serious illnesses or disabilities.
The pop star has an impressive history of helping people in need. Three years ago she founded the Avril Lavigne Foundation, which offers assistance to young people in need, and she often celebrates her birthday by asking people to help others in lieu of giving her gifts.
This year, the former teen queen is stepping things up, and offering some exciting prizes to those who donate. Through celebrity fundraising platform Prizeo, fans can donate anything from $3 to upwards of $400 and be entered into a chance to win a trip to join Lavigne on the red carpet at her album release party later this year.
"Flights from anywhere in the world and accommodation included – and the best part is, anyone who donates has a chance to win!" Lavigne wrote on her Prizeo page. "But that’s not it. I want you to feel like a rockstar – so you’ll be walking the red carpet with me, where we’ll pose for photos together and have an awesome time!"
Lavigne's new self-titled album is due to be released September 24, but the record release party date has not yet been announced.
The campaign kicks off Wednesday, September 11 and runs until October 29. Funds raised will go toward worthwhile projects including providing music therapy services for patients at the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA.
Anyone who donates is eligible for prizes and rewards including a campaign bracelet, an autographed headshot and a handwritten thank-you card from Lavigne herself. There are also prizes for the “biggest sharers” who raise the most funds by recruiting friends and family to donate. The top 10 sharers will win an Avril swag bag, the top three will also win a photograph of their name (temporarily!) tattooed on Avril's arm, and the person who shares the most will win Lavigne's autographed Converse shoes. Pretty cool stuff!
