Britney Spears Wraps Up ‘X Factor’ Season In Stunning, Tasteful Ensemble

It's been quite the year for Britney Spears. While the X Factor judge successfully navigated a big career comeback in 2012, she was not immune to sporting a few big fashion mistakes--including some ill-advised tight garments and...well...fringed and fluffy things.

However, the 31-year-old finally redeemed herself in the wardrobe arena Thursday night, showing up at the X Factor finale red carpet in Los Angeles wearing a gown that managed to be both tasteful and daring.

Spears's black, low-backed, and paneled dress was designed by Bottega Venetta and perfectly flattered her trim figure without being overtly revealing. She chose an elegant updo, classic makeup, and simple diamond earrings to complement the look.

The result? A fittingly grown-up ensemble that still managed to be exciting enough to celebrate the singer's triumphant return to the top of her game in 2012.

Spears's contestant on the X Factor, 13-year-old Carly Rose Sonenclar, placed second on the show. She lost out to country singer Tate Stevens, who was mentored by L.A. Reid. The end of the program's season capped a year in which Spears topped Forbes's list of highest-earning women in music, pulling ahead of other female powerhouses Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.
