Burton & Elfman Box It Up For The Holidays

One of the most successful and interesting musical partnerships in modern cinema has been the one forged between quirky film director Tim Burton and equally quirky composer Danny Elfman. Elfman got his start in the pioneering L.A. new wave band Oingo Boingo, and has since penned music for "The Simpsons" and "Desperate Housewives" and films by other legendary directors like Peter Jackson, Gus Van Sant, Sam Raimi, Ang Lee, Brian De Palma, and Clive Barker...but it's his many iconic scores for Burton's movies, from 1985's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure through this year's Alice In Wonderland, for which he is perhaps best known. Elfman has scored all but two of Burton's major studio releases.

So to celebrate the quarter-century anniversary of the Burton/Elfman partnership, Warner Bros. is issuing The Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box just in time for 2010 holiday shopping. The limited-edition, numbered boxed set (only 1,000 made), fittingly shaped like an antique tin treasure chest, contains more than 19 hours of music (including expanded versions of 13 scores and seven hours of previously unreleased material, like the scores to Burton's Museum Of Modern Art exhibit and Elfman's Edward Scissorhands ballet) on 16 CDs featuring artwork by Burton and detailed liner notes by Elfman. The box also includes an illustrated, 250-page hardbound book with a foreword by frequent Burton collaborator Johnny Depp; a collectible skeleton-key flashdrive that unlocks a USB loaded with MP3s; and an hourlong DVD of Burton and Elfman in a career-spanning conversation.

This deluxe box is surely what the discerningly geeky audiophile and/or cinemaphile on your Christmas/Channukah/Kwanzaa list wants to find under the tree next month. And hey, it'll only cost you $499! But with this much music, it's the gift that'll clearly keep on giving.
