Glee and viral video star Charice Pempengco looks almost unrecognizable nowadays! Over the weekend, the pint-sized singer with the enormous voice from the Philippines confessed in a teary interview for Filipino television show The Buzz that she is a lesbian.
Local rumors had been circulating for weeks over the sexual orientation of the international star, but had not made an announcement out of fear of alienating her fans. Yet, when faced with the question during her Buzz interview, the 21-year-old did not back down.
Pempengco's mother and grandmother are reportedly having trouble with the news, but the singer is hoping they will come around.
Competing in singing competitions from a very young age, videos of Pempengco singing made huge waves on Youtube in 2007, catching the eye of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, who brought the teen singer to the U.S. to perform her signature song "And I Am Telling You" along with Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". The appearance opened many more doors for the singer in the U.S., including an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2008, a deal with super producer David Foster, and a guest-starring role on Glee as rival singer and foreign exchange student Sunshine Corazon.
Pempengco made headlines again after her formerly estranged father, whom she had reunited with after she became famous, was tragically stabbed to death in her hometown in the Philippines in 2011. But the singer had been out of the spotlight for the most part in the U.S., even her official Twitter account has not been updated since 2012.
Perhaps the most striking thing about Pempengco is how drastically she had changed her appearance. A far cry from the very young-looking, very girly style she burst on the scene with, the singer chopped her very long hair into a edgy boy's cut, styles herself with boy's clothes, and sports a number of tattoos.
Watch one of Charice Pempengco's earliest appearances at 15-years-old, although she looks much younger!
Posting a video to her fans after her revealing interview, the singer said, "I just wanna say thank you personally to all my fans, to all the people who are still supporting me, who are still there for me, and honestly I am very, very happy."
