"Rock The Boat"
I don't know if there is another video that tugs on moreheartstrings. On one account, Aaliyah lures you in with the sexiest video ofher career. The Hype Williams directed short was filmed in the Bahamas and captures all the beauty of the Caribbean locale. The late R&B pop star even lookslike a mermaid in one of the under water scenes, and, in others, she dancers inthe sand, water, and on a boat.
But the video is equally as sad as it was released followingher untimely death on August 25, 2001.
On her way back from shooting the video, Aaliyah's planecrashed, killing her and eight others. The song from her third album,"Aaliyah," was nominated for a Grammy for the Best Female R&B Vocalperformance award.
I'll put it this way, when I first heard the song "Don'tCha," I figured only a very confident group of women with the looks to back itup could release a song with such bravado-"Don't cha wish your girlfriend washot like me?" So seeing this video was a fantasy come true. HOT enough for thesummer indeed. Front and center, the stunning Nicole Scherzinger, surrounded bygood company, pranced around in tank tops and short shorts while drag racing inconvertible jeeps. They raised the bar.
GwenStefani is so hot, it seems as though all of her videos are shot in thesummer time to take advantage of her trademark midriff baring outfits. Gwen andthe boys of No Doubt frolic, instruments in hand, inside of a vessel. When breaking from performing, theyspeed on their jet skis in-between other docked ships.
The track produced by the Neptunes, gives the song a dramatic, James Bond movie edge. The April 2002 release wasthe perfect way to build anticipation for the blazing months to come.
One year after CBS launched the US version of the "Survivor" TVseries with the $1 million prize, Destiny's Child adopted the title for itstriumphant song and island video. It was the title track and first single fromtheir third album.
Destiny's Child had experienced a couple shake ups in thegroup lineup. They started with four girls, replaced two, and one of thenewbies made a quick exit.
This is a summer videos playlist, so why re-hash all ofthis. Bottom line is, when the new trio--Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle--foundthemselves stranded on a deserted island all the drama was pushed aside.
This made for one of the sexiest rumbles in the jungle,EVER!
"All Summer Long"
Apparently, KidRock has always known how to party. On this nostalgic track, he goes backto 1989, remembering a lakeside summer fling. For the video, he has found ayoung couple to reenact the song's storyline.
The video also captures the modern day Kid Rock reliving hissummer days, "Rock N Roll Jesus" style. Now, instead of one girl, Kid enjoysthe company of a dozen bikini-clad women.
The 2008 song made its impact, reaching No. 1 in 8countries.
"Hot In Here"
Nelly's 2002summer video for "Hot In Herre" earned him his first No. 1 song on theBillboard Hot 100 chart and the Best Male Rap Solo Performance Grammy.
The video lived up to its title, pushing every boundarypossible. As it urged partygoers to "take off all your clothes," the videoextras were up for the task. They stripped down to beach wear as the firesprinklers doused their figurative flames.
I'm sure the director has enough gratuitous outtakes fromthis video shoot to make a "Girls Gone Wild" DVD.
"I'm A Slave 4 U"
Anytime a 20-year-old opens a song lyric with "I know I maybe young, but I have feelings too," you know darn well they are about to say ordo something they have no business doing. Add Britney Spears and the songtitle "I'm A Slave 4 U' to the equation, and it spells out"a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y" for Y! Music's Sexy Summer Videos playlist.
This muy caliente clip indeed captures the summer, butBritney's bad girl persona has nighttime activities on the brain. As the sunbegins to set, Britney finds a club filled with people with zombie-like dazedexpressions who appear to have been partying for a week straight.
There's not much dancing here, mostly groping, grinding, andsweating. Maybe it's part of the reason why PETA was upset that the former Mrs.Federline involved that poor innocent snake in her 2001 performance of thissong on MTV's Video Music Awards.
It was inevitable that Mariah's foray into hip-hopwould include work with the Bad Boy camp, and in typical Mariah fashion, shedid it big. Not only did she bring out Bad Boy head Puffy for the "Honey" video, she also enlisted Ma$e and the Lox for the water ride, shiny gold suits andall.
The extended version is filled with summer theatrics. Whenheld for hostage, Mariah escapes, jumping from a balcony into a swimming pool, emerging in a designer bathing suit, and continuing the case on a jet ski.
But since this is Mariah, the video would not be grand enoughwithout including a helicopter rescue or a sequence featuring Navy boybackground dancers.
This is probably the video that got a then 17-year-old Nick Cannon to start up hisMariah Carey wedding ring fund.
Only English rockers Duran Duran are cool enoughto defy two rules of the USsummer video code without fault. First, they skipped the beach wear for AntonyPrice suits in their video for "Rio," thetitle track of their sophomore album. And second, they released the video inthe fall month of November.
But even 27 years after the video's original 1982 release, wecan't be mad at the group formed by Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Stephen Duffy andlater Roger Taylor.
The freaky island girl in full body paint, underwatercocktail, and saxophone rafting have earned this one a much deserved spot inthe playlist.
"Love Will Never Do (Without You)"
Hey Kimora Lee Simmons, isn't that your man, DijimonHounsou, literally rolling around on various cylindrical objects in the middleof a desert-with Janet?
Ordinarily, a sweltering and dry desert is the last place Iwould want to be. But if the deal included Janet Jackson, now or during this"Rhythm Nation" era of 1990, I would have been looking just like Mr. Hounsou.Well, without the muscles and bald head.
"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" marked Janet's fifth No.1. This comes in as my favorite Sexy Summer Video because Janet took it there, but did so with class. In form fitting jeans, a bustier, and classic pinned up'do, Janet made me recall one of her classic lines.
"My first name ain't baby, it's Janet, Miss Jackson if yanasty."
