Mariah Carey has been performing her holiday classic "All I Want For Christmas Is You" for a whopping 18 years now--the tune was released in 1994--and has given it just about every slant possible over that period of time. However, this year, she's outdone herself with a surprisingly fresh version of the song.
On Tuesday night's Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the American Idol judge sat down with house band the Roots, as well as an exuberant Fallon himself, and performed the song accompanied by toy instruments that you'd find in an elementary-school classroom. A chorus of cute kids pop up and help along with the vocals as well.
The result? An undeniably adorable tribute to the season that manages to somehow be not the least bit cloying. It's rare--and nice!--to see artists having this much fun, as everyone involved clearly seems to be doing.
Carey's wardrobe choice--a clingy, cleavage-revealing gown--is a bit PG-13, but the rest of the clip is appropriate for, and should delight, children of all ages. Carey's already been getting mileage out of her Christmas chestnut, having performed it last month at the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City.
