Whitney Houston: How Good Was She?

Whitney Houston's unexpected departure from this Earth, and the deafening stream of praise from nearly all quarters of the globe--from fans, fellow musicians, the star-studded attendees of Clive Davis's Grammy Party, held Saturday night in the same hotel in which she died hours earlier--left no doubt. She was deeply loved, and will be deeply missed.

And her career résumé, cut and pasted to nearly every well-meaning obituary because of its vast and impressive bulk, was, without question, eye-opening. And, to be fair, unprecedented.

It was no wonder, then, that Sunday night's Grammy Awards program seemed less a celebration of the ongoing and still burgeoning career of British singer Adele than a long and sentimental tribute to the suddenly dead, suddenly gone, troubled singer Houston--who years earlier seemed the music industry's very brightest hope.

Still, the question remains: Despite the accolades, the massive record sales, the radio hits, the video hits, the movie hits--exactly how good was Whitney Houston?

It's not a small question, and not an easy one to answer.

If "good" is defined as a function of overall record sales and public recognition, who on Earth can argue? According to the often-inaccurate-but-not-too-bad-in-terms-of-the-big-picture Wikipedia, Houston was a staggering record-breaker: Guinness World Records apparently lists her as "the most awarded female act of all time," among her credits are two Emmy awards, six Grammy awards, 30 Billboard Music awards, and 22 American Music awards, part of what is said to be a "total of 425 career awards as of 2010." Clearly, "Friday" will be only the beginning of new contender Rebecca Black's quest to attain similar heights.

No less importantly, Houston set a freakish amount of Billboard chart records during the run she enjoyed since her 1985 debut album Whitney Houston. Most of them have been dutifully listed in the obituaries that have appeared since her passing; suffice to say that she is credited with selling "over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide," and that doesn't begin to touch what's been shared via downloads, the original Napster, and those peculiar regions of the world where cloned CD-Rs cost less than a dollar because publishing royalties aren't exactly a major priority.

And in fact, the two paragraphs above are the major problem.

Whitney Houston's rise to prominence directly coincided with some of the very same aspects of the music industry that, in 2012, is close to bringing it to its knees. If one is willing to accept that she was immensely talented and had an absolutely marvelous voice, which this writer does, one must also consider the following industry trends, most of which directly coincide with Houston's rise to fame:

    1) Houston was the recipient of enormous record company publicity: In this writer's possession is at least one Whitney Houston calendar (I could swear I've got two, somewhere, but this came later), part of a promotional boxed set her label Arista offered up in 1987 to promote her upcoming album Whitney. Titled Portfolio, the set included an album, a calendar, postcards, a songbook, and, if you were me at the time, a personal note from the label publicist implying that the singer was of the highest internal priority. She also was quite an attractive model in earlier days.

    2) Houston's material often seemed random, the work of a committee first and foremost looking for radio hits: Houston's rise to fame directly coincided with the conspicuous "rebirth" of professional songwriters who penned hits for a living and never really entered the performing sphere--people like Michael Masser, who co-penned her early hits like "Greatest Love Of All" and "Saving All My Love For You," the later in fact with Gerry Goffin, who did the same trick years earlier with former co-writer (and former spouse and later performer) Carole King. Nothing wrong with this--in the end, the song always wins--but historically at odds with the singer-songwriter figures that had previously been the late-'60s tradition.

    3) Houston's résumé would later become her defining point: Upon her massive success, the singer's label boss Clive Davis would often refer to her less as an artist than as a stunning sales record-setter. Though lip-service would be paid, her real art (with his help, though that was politely unspoken) came via her ability to--with the proper selection of song and the proper selection of producer--construct a virtually "perfect" song that would swiftly rise to the top of the charts, gain airplay in as many formats as possible, and offend nobody. Whitney Houston's songs did not define her; she was a near-perfect human "instrument" that, like the best keyboards of the day, would not go out of tune or detract from the overall package: A finely selected and produced song guaranteed to offend as few people as possible.

    4) Houston's career "branched out": Few would contend that the singer's appearance in The Bodyguard, which brought her praise and staggering record sales thanks to her cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," was a less than astute move, but still it signaled a departure from her pure musical focus to...other, broader areas. During the '90s, the other areas would include movies such as Waiting To Exhale and The Preacher's Wife--which, whether perceived as marketing vehicles for their accompanying soundtrack albums, or vice-versa, removed her from her status as a "pure" musician and jettisoned her into that scary realm of "pop culture figures." The culmination came via 2005's horrendous "Being Bobby Brown" Bravo TV series, which offered the public much more than they ever wanted to see about their mythical pop goddess and her questionable taste in men and appropriate onscreen behavior. In short: Whitney Houston was an early pioneer in displaying exactly why reality TV was despicable in theory and in actual execution. A literal career-killer.

    5) Live by the sword, die by the sword: Absolutely no one would dispute that Ms. Aretha Franklin--coincidentally Whitney Houston's godmother--is, and has always been, the true Queen Of Soul. Her work has largely been impeccable. And yet with very few exceptions--perhaps relevantly during her protracted stint at Clive Davis's Arista Records--she has rarely been viewed as an artist in search of a hit, an artist whose reputation was purely a function of her ability to set sales records or reach the top of the charts. She remains a legend. Houston, whose power ultimately was projected as a function of her sales ability, always suffered in comparison. Franklin's stunning ability to pull notes out of nowhere and send shivers up your spine--typified in the '60s via hits like "Respect"--might have been equaled by Houston in terms of raw ability, but on the basis of the latter's many albums, and the committee at her label that saw fit to ultimately release them, one gets the impression that she was encouraged not to go too "out there" for fear of upsetting the general public. As a result, when we praise Aretha Franklin, we now speak in terms of her raw ability; when we praise Whitney Houston, we speak in terms of her record sales. And a lot of people who buy records are stupid. And rarely play them more than a few times.

    6) Whitney Houston caused "American Idol": Once, absolutely no one in their right mind had any idea what the term "melisma" meant--hint, according to our good buddies at Wikipedia, it's "the singing of a single syllable of text while between moving between several different notes in succession"--but rest assured that between Whitney and her conspicuously inferior successor Mariah Carey, most of America now assumes being a "good singer" involves acrobatic vocal skills that express little other than genetic ability and virtually zilch in terms of emotion, soulfulness, or ability to connect with fellow humans. It's why most contestants on "American Idol" and other similar reality music shows are embarrassing and painful to watch, let alone listen to. To be blunt: They suck, and Whitney's pretty much to blame.

Remove the very concept of record sales and "cultural phenomenon" from the career path of Whitney Houston, and you've got an artist who perhaps enjoyed a few years of a positive critical reception before her work was regarded as the bland output of an artist who was subservient to a label that insisted her work offend as few people as possible while simultaneously mildly please many, many more.

Though she's now regarded as a superstar whose work by definition was geared toward the masses, Houston, in her very earliest work, offered a tantalizing glimpse of a very capable singer who--were her life choices different--might have ended up in another place entirely.

Hours after her death, various clips of one of her first vocal performances surfaced, and to those unfamiliar, it's moving indeed.

In 1982, when she was only 19, the singer appeared on a marvelous recording by the band Material, whose album One Down--released on Elektra Records in 1982--also featured legendary jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp, who appears with Houston on this moving version of "Memories," penned by British band Soft Machine more than a decade earlier. It's a beautiful, moving version of the song--and for one of very few times in her career, indeed, before she'd actually signed her first record deal--it displays the singer in all her glory, pursuing art rather than hit-making, of reaching the greatest audience possible. Its message, even more ironically, has even greater relevance today. Give it a listen.

I wish that all the good things we hear people say now were said to her when she was still alive... when she could still hear it, when she needed it the most.

This is so true. She was a talent to all who loved her music. No one can deny that. I will miss seeing her sing. Love to her mother and daughter.

Bobby was bad for her. We all know that's when she started to go down.
      • Dawn 3 months ago
We did say the words. She just couldn't hear them because Bobby was jealous of her. I think he loved her somewhat but he couldn't measure up to the pedestal we the fans had her on. so he destroyed her. Sad because she sure loved him beyond measure at one point.

Not even sure why you felt the need to wirte this mess, you trying to minimize her career only makes you look stupid. Point blank.... she was the best vocalist hands down.... put that in your next post.

I agree, Yahoo has these so called journalist writing these negative articles about Whitney, it's crazy. Whitney is a legend/icon and has left a great legacy for her daughter and family. I'm not talking about her personal life, but her professional life..... R.I..P Whitney "Nippy" Houston...gone but never forgotten. No more troubles of this world!

A lame attempt to minimize the career of an artist who captivated the music industry for almost two decades, and an artist everyone has tried to emulate but none has been able to even come close to so many years after. Her voice and charisma is responsible for her ascent into stardom, not some invisible system. She deserved every minute of it...it was her gift and it made room for her.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Thank you. She was a shining star whose voice was untouchable.

I wholeheartedly agree with both statements. It's individuals in the "press" like the author Dave DiMartino above, that wreak such havoc by way of the almighty pen. One good thing that is type of forum affords us all is the opportunity to refute and reject what was formerly considered the "authority" figure, we all realize now, that bylines are written by mere mortals, whose "op ed" pieces are no more than simply that: their own (oftimes) stupid opnions.

There's an old saying, Mr. DiMartino, that goes something like: "Opnions are like (sic) "nose" holes. Everybody's got 'em"

Why does the media do this? What's the point? This was done when Michael Jackson died. He is one of the greatest, Elvis is one of the greatest, Aretha is one of the greatest, and Whitney is one of the greatest, too. Must we crown the greatest of all. Rolling Stone magazine had already crowned Aretha Franklin as the greatest singer of all time. We agreed. No denying, Whitney had one of the greatest voices of all time. Let's leave it at that!

Aretha Franklin, was is not the greatest singer of all time.. infact , they never play her music.

The proper respect must always be paid to those who came before us, and b/c of that and her talent Aretha Franklin, is and always will be the Queen of Soul. To compare her and Whitney is apples and oranges, they both are great and have their own individual styles. They were not imitators unlike people like Christina A, M.Carey, etc, etc and Elvis, who is proclaimed as the "king" of Rock and Roll, but you cannot be the king of something you imitate. Very rarely do you see someone set their own style

Think the author of this blog little peeved that the grammy, which I haven't watched in 30 years, was more about Whitney than Adele. Th

Whitney Houstan and Michael Jackson..a drug addict and a pedofile. NEITHER one can be compared to Aretha Franklin and/or Elvis....the were the king and queen of what they did, not the little boy fondler and the dope head.

Thank you for your comments and response. To be honest, you have proven to fall short of God's glory yourself by judging Whitney Houston. Exactly who died and made you King? Did you actually see her take any drugs/ Were you with her? What have you done in your lifetime that if the truth be told, you and God would be ashamed of? No man is perfect but Jesus. I have filled up over 100 garbage (trash cans) trying to straighten out my lifetime of troubles, sins, and heartaches. I need to empty those filled ones and still have room to fill up more to clean up my own mess. Why should I try to sweep around your door or Whitney's door when my door is full of garbage? if you can't say anything good, then just remain silent. How do you know who have and have not been walking with Jesus? Were you there when Whitney died? Listen to the songs that she sang to my Lord and Savior. Who are you to say that God has not forgiven Whitney? God forgives us 77x 7 times but man puts us straight in hell. God forbid, Let God be true and every man be a liar. The first commandment is Love. Love does not put anyone down, love uplifts. Love does not envy. Love is not jealous. How can we say that we love God who we have never seen and put our sisters and brothers down who we have seen. Psalm 118:8 plainly states that man is an unsafe example, so follow Jesus. Choose you this day who you will serve. Remember that when your day of Judgement comes, God will not call my name or Whitney's name. He will call YOUR NAME AND YOU WILL ANSWER FOR YOUR SINS, NOT WHITNEY'S OR MINE. God Bless you and Jesus loves You. Repent now for the Kingdom of God is at hand. Amen........

The writer of this article is an IDIOT! How can you reduce the greatest voice of all time to "record sales". All female singers are compared to Whitney Houston. There will never be another Whitney Houston!!! You should be ashamed of yourself for even hinting that Whitney wasn't that "good". NOBODY could outsing Whitney. I figure you must be hearing impaired or mildly retarded. I am offended by your accusations and I'm sure other fans are as well. And where does YAHOO get off allowing you to post such crap?!?! It wasn't about record sales...it was about the voice on the records that sold. Nobody, back in the day, would continue to buy your records if you could not sing. And by the way, what about her rendition of the National Anthem? Was that all a marketing scheme as well. Nobody will ever sing that song as good as she did...NOBODY...EVER!!! It made it to the top 20's. It made it there because she could sing...no, Whitney could SANG! Whatever your issue is with Whitney, we could have gone the rest of our lives without hearing that #$%$ from you. Don't try to dog her out now. Yes, she had her struggles (which we all do), however, most of us are not famous and our issues don't get played out in the media. And nonetheless, whatever she went through did not make her a bad person and she does/did not deserve people like you belittling her God-given talent to record sales. I wish I had more time, but the more I type the more upset I'm becoming because people like you will continue to try to dog her out. Remember, she leaves behind a daughter, a mother, family, friends, and millions of fans who love her and will be praying for God to comfort her family in their time of bereavement. I pray Whitney is with the Lord and I know that something good will come of this tragedy. God Bless!!!

I dont have words for the disgusting praise given to someone who has not lived a God fearing life and who has not been walking with my Lord and Savior. What evidence is there that she did? Where is it? In her songs that other ppl wrote for her? In the drugs she was addicted to? In her TV appearances? I am not the judge of the living and the dead, but if her life was an example of what a Christian is, then Christianity isnt what the world needs...and of course, many know Who the real answer is...more Jesus and less of ourselves.

I didn't know Whitney, but I did knew Whitney! Her pictures plastered my wall as if she was family. As I drove to school in my car, her voice rang out to me. When I was at parties she was there and I wanted to Dance With Somebody also! When I embarked into relationships I felt her guiding me with words of I Will Always Love You. When I had breakups and sat alone, she brought out my tears with Where Do Broken Hearts Go! No I didn't know Whitney personally, but I knew she had a way of soothing people and letting them know that she understood.

I practiced her songs and wanted to know more and more about her. She was like a mentor! She was the life of every party, the love of many weddings, and the peacefulness of many funerals. She brought us through the 80's and 90's with love and warm hearts! She changed the way many singers song and many people felt! She had fashion and style. She was beautiful and had a smile that brighten your hearts!

Reading of her personal struggles, I wanted to reach out to her because I felt she was like family. If you're a fan, I'm sure you understand! Whitney had helped so many without really knowing. Now she was going through something and I'm sure so many wanted to help. I was so happy when her mother intervened! I was like, Thank you God for hearing my prayers!

No I didn't know Whitney Houston, but my soul knew her well! And if you lived the 80's and 90's, I'm sure you knew and felt her presence also! I'm sure she was at some of those same parties you attended, help you through some of your relationship and break ups, and at the end made you smile! Yeah, girlfriend that was Whitney!! She gave us 30 years! So if you're a fan or even not a fan , then it's time that you give her some love and respect back! Love you Whitney!!!

I don't think the author ever meant to imply that her talent was not extreme. In fact, he states several times that it was one of the greatest ever. What he is saying, and I agree, is that she fell victim to unscrupulous, shallow, greedy people that only had interest in selling records to the masses, and she never had the opportunity to stretch herself and her musical intellect and be the innovative artist she could have been. She was amazing, but she wasn't an innovator, because she was not pushed in that direction.
    • Melissa  •  3 months ago
Whitney's vocals were just as good as Aretha's maybe even better in some cases. But what really set Whitney apart from Aretha is Whitney was beautiful and the record company capitalized on it. Her songs were pop songs, but with soul mixed in with it. That's what made it so unique and so widely accepted. She had all the ingredients to turn out major hits. These were not any watered down bubble gummy songs by any means. These were beautifully written and arranged songs that showcased the best of Whitney's voice. A record company is supposed know their artist and give them songs that will showcase them the best. I don't think Whitney ever sung anything that she herself didn't love or believe in. That's why they were hits, because you could feel her heart and soul when she sang them.
So the question is How Good Was She, the anwser is Phenomenal. That's how good she was. There's not a singer out there today who compares to Whitney when she was at her best.
I love you Whitney...RIP and I will forever be a fan and admirer of you.

I am not star struck. I am not a Whitney Houston fanatic. I am lover of music, all kinds, all genres. And, the truth is the truth. Whitney Huston was a phenomena! Her voice? Good god! Incredible. One of a kind. She blew me away. There is no comparing her. She is in a category all her own. Just like all incredible singers. No need to call her the 'best' or the 'greatest'. She was simply Whitney Houston.

Satan did not want me to post my comments but God is Soverign and not Satan. I tried for two days to post it and it was rejected. Let's all remember to give out but never give up. Laying all else aside, let's put God first in everything and begin to serve him and not the world. The world will never receive us because the world received not Jesus. man look at the outward parts but God looks at the heart. Whitney had a pure heart and genuine love for everybody. She lived loving and blessing her enemies and doing good to them that despitefully use and persecuted her. Jesus was with twelve disciples and one of them was a devil, Judas. He was the same devil that walked with Jesus daily and sold him for thirty pieces of silver to the enemy. Peter also confessed his love for Jesus so strongly until it was time for the test. Just as Jesus prophesized, Peter denied Jesus three times. Whitney was also surrounded by devils who only cared about her fame and fortune and never her well being. My sister in Christ is free. Thank God Almighty she's free. She would not want to spend another day on this Earth if she could make a choice. She would stay in the bosom of Jesus Christ. His love for her is everlasting. Amen. Amen. Amen..........

To God be the Glory for all He has done. Just as Pastor wnnas said, We have to PRIORITIZE in our everyday lives and put Jesus first. Matthew 6:33 and Romans 10:9, 10 should be lived and not just reheassed. The song, Well Done by Deitrick Haddon should be heard by everyone. Listen to this song and PRIORITIZE that God will say this to you. God has called Whitney home. It does not matter at this time what kind of car she drove, what the size of her house was, how good her voice was, or the fact that she at one time was depressed and married to Bobby Brown. None of that matters at this time. What really matters is that God gives grace and mercy to whom He wants to give grace and mercy to. Who died and made some of us King that we should judge Whitney? Let's begin by sweeping the trash around our own front doors before we attempt to clean up the trash around Whitney's front door. If the truth be told, there will not be room enough to fill the garbage cans from collecting trash from our own front doors. God has made it possible for Whitney to receive Eternal Life. I thank God Almighty that we don't have a Heaven or hell to put her in. Let's repent and turn from our wicked ways and thoughts so that we can meet Whitney again. For we know not the day, time, or hour. Jesus is soon to come. Will you be ready or will you be still gossiping, backbiting, lying, cheating, etc...? Let's do one more thing and pray for Bobbi Christina, her mother, Cissy , Bobby Brown, her father.and all other fans, family, and friends to include Aretha Franklin. I speak steadfast healing to Aretha's body now by the blood of Jesus. May God protect and keep all of them in his care. God never give to his children no more than they can bear. As for Bobby leaving the funeral, patience is a virture. The agitator won that day. You allowed the devil to win by leaving. I don't care if they had asked me to move 100 times, I would have moved and not complained at all. That was a time that Bobbi Christina needed you to be there. Let the haters be your motivators. Your haters are going straight to hell, thus said Almighty God. The same applies to us if we harbor hatred for one another. How can we love God who we have not seen and hate our brothers and sisters that we see everyday? We must forgive our sisters and brothers even as Christ forgives us daily. Remember that God loves the sinner but hates sin. If we confess our sins before God, he is just and able to forgive us and clean us from ALL unrighteousness. If we confess our sins before man, he is ready to persecute and hang us, never forgiving us. Choose ye this day who you will serve? Whitney's funeral changed my life forever. It caused me to PRIORITIZE and put God first in everything. The song that comes to mind for ALL Whitney's fans is ":Your love is my love."(Judgement Day) What will you say to God when Judgement Day comes? Will you say, I spoke badly about my sister Whitney or put my brother Bobby down? What will your reward be? I am closing now but I will always truly love my black, beautiful, and talented sister, Whitney Houston. I pray in Jesus name that God will send angels to encamp around Bobbi Christina as she, too, prepare for the music industry. God will truly send angels around her who truly love her and not sinners and thieves who only care about how much money she can make for them in the music industry.May God get the Glory from everything that she and her grandmother Cissy touches from this day, henceforth, and forever more, Amen Amen Amen..................................
