John actually had no idea that his song would be used in the promos--he literally found out about the placement when a friend called him and, much to his shock, told him to turn on the television ASAP. And considering that John's currently working on his first album in three years, due out in February 2011, the timing could not be better.
"This came out of nowhere; it just dropped in our lap!" John says. "I couldn't have wished for this. I couldn't have made this stuff up. It's going to remind people of who I am, just as I'm coming out with a new record."
John also finds it ironic that his sad song was used in Conan's "hysterically funny" ads. "You know, it's a very serious tune. I wrote it a long time ago. I wrote it about my ex-wife," he reveals. "I mean, I don't miss my ex-wife anymore...but I do miss Conan!"
Now there are rumors of John and Conan collaborating in some way, although it remains to be seen in what capacity. John jokes that it would be great if Conan kicked off his premiere episode by lip-synching to "Missing You" ("We're both redheads, so he could get a crewcut to look like me, and I could be off to one side singing and he could be front and center when the lights come up!"), and he's also volunteered to perform the song on the roof of the TBS studio. But we'll just have to see if these two famous gingers really ever join forces onscreen.
In the meantime, watch the rest of the "Missing You" promos. Conan has clearly been worth the Waite!
