December 5 – 11: Madonna Super Bowl Performance and Beastie Boys Induction Spark Backlash

    Follow me on Facebook, Twitter.

Kiss member Gene Simmons and War founder Howard E. Scott unleashed verbal assaults this week on other acts.

Gene SimmonsSimmons, the bassist and vocalist for the legendary band, said Madonna is not appropriate to perform at Super Bowl XLVI. When asked for his opinion on the matter, Simmons had a sarcastic response. "I love all karaoke singers," he told TMZ. "I like all the girl singers who get up and sing with tapes. Shame on you."

Simmons, whose band performed at the Super Bowl in 1999, said artists who lip-sync misrepresent themselves to their audience. He suggested that entertainers who sing over vocal tracks inform their audience beforehand.

Madonna, GettyImages, Stephen Lovekin"I don't care what your music is, have some integrity, be real, or full disclosure before the fact," he said. "Hold up a sign that says, '70 percent of what you hear is fake. It's a tape. I'm a karaoke singer.'"

Madonna has not responded publicly to Simmons' insults.

The Beastie Boys also caught flack for receiving a special honor, being named Wednesday as 2012 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Scott, whose band produced a number of classic hits including "Low Rider," "Slippin Into Darkness," and "Why Can't We Be Friends," was offended that War was not selected to be inducted despite its nomination.

Scott, in a Kanye West-like dig, slammed the Beastie Boys for making the 2012 cut. Scott said War was due to receive the honor before the punk rap band.

"We were cranking out gold records when they were still in diapers," Scott told TMZ. "How could the Beastie Boys get in before us when they sampled War's music on their first album? I'll eat their platinum records."

WarScott's sampling comment refers to the Beastie Boys' song "Slow and Low" from their 1986 debut "Licensed to Ill." The track includes a piece of War's "Low Rider."

The Beastie Boys have not responded to the attack, but did thank their predecessors in a statement released Wednesday.

"While we are very proud of the music we make, we have to acknowledge the inspiration from our families, friends and musicians like the slits, bad brains, x-rap spex, the treacherous three and too many others to possibly name," they said in the statement.

The Beastie Boys are joined by other new inductees, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns 'N Roses, and '60s singer Donovan.

Beastie BoysFormer Pussycat Doll lead singer Nicole Scherzinger was also the victim of ridicule this week. The "X Factor" judge was blamed for 13-year-old contestant Rachel Crow being sent home Wednesday. Instead of voting to keep Crow on the show, Scherzinger let the viewers decide, a decision that backfired and left the teen sobbing for her mother.

Seriously War is cracking on the Beastie Boys and their music b/c they were inducted into the R&R hall of fame? It's not like they voted themselves in. Be mad at the panel who makes the desion, not your fellow musican's.And if you want to go just on facts alone, (#1 hits, most albums sold, awards, you get stomped) Okay so u had 7 #1 hits, 8 gold albums, and 2 platium. Compare that to 11 #1 hits, 6 Gold, 4 Platinum, then they went 9 times Platinum, triple platinum 4 times, and double platinum 7 times. So you really come of badly critisizing a great band who deserves everything they get. And so they sampled a piece of your song Low Rider, well you must have liked them then b/c you gave them permission to use it. Bottom line, stop Hatin', Music shouldn't be about winning awards anyway. It should be about MUSIC.

These comments are the biggest jokes ever. Madonna has been #1 for a long, long time (in her time). Sure, her time has passed. She'll remain a legend. Don't call her untalented. You just don't know what real music sounds like, everything today is auto-tuned. LOL. h8rs gunna h8.

What would some nobody complaining anonymously online about integrity know about integrity?

The Beastie were an influence on many later acts, that is why they are in the hall. I really do not believe Guns N Roses belong there. They hate a big hit with Appetite for Destruction, but the Illusions should have been one album. They were good not great. I also do not see them as an influence as the Chili Peppers and Beasties. I am not a big fan of rap, but the Beasties opened the door for groups like Rage.

all you defending Madonna are you kidding me!!!!!!!!! Gene is absolutely right, did you all not see the Black Eyed Peas stink it up last year with there sampled sing over music crap? We need real bands that play music, no Madonna, Kesha, Lady Gaga, or any of that crap...
      • Chris 5 months ago
madonna is beyond a legend,i think the superbowl is a step down for her
      • It's Frida, B*tch. 5 months ago
I agree with you on Madonna and Ke$ha, but Lady Gaga can actually sing and play piano, and can do it pretty well actually. However, I do think that they should get rid of all the rock bands and pop stars playing at halftime shows. Bring back the marching bands!!!

I'm confused, maybe the ROCK N ROLL Hall of Fame should change it's name to "Musics Popular People Hall of Fame" I mean C'MON MAN (ESPN) Rock N Roll is Rock N Roll, what happened to the artist that made this country what it is today! Long Live Rock N Roll!
      • John P 5 months ago
Dude when Aretha Franklin and Madonna are in the rock n roll hall of fame while Rush, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest are not it proves that there isn't very much consistency to the label Rock.

Madonna? The Superbowl? That is like asking an Al Qaida leader to host the Nobel Peace prize awards ceremony. For the dear love of God. Maybe Kim Khardasian should get a spot in the Mensa club while we are at it. Thank you Gene. Merry Christmas one and all. I wish you the best.

Be real from a band whose whole idea of rock n roll is a front clown who couldnt sing all he did was stick his tounge out wear a ton of makeup perform doing load bad musac realy were does this no talent jerk get off talking about anyone and im no Madonna fan Heres a test for you name one kiss song now name a Madonna song or Stones song Jimi H. this gays a legend in his own mind and its a small mind
    • Christina  •  5 months ago
So what. Really? Everyone has the right to perform in any which way they please; it's up to the viewer to choose what they like, and they have that right also. No one should eat McDonalds, yet we have that right. Chill out dude. There is a lot more to be upset about. More important stuff. Take a bigger look around you.
    • DaryleP  •  5 months ago
If you want to represent yourself as a musician don't lipsync. It doesn't matter anyway, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was the last Half time show I even watched. I mean really Madonna? Why not the Village People, Brittany Spears, or Mily Cirus. How about Hank Williams Jr. Oh yeah, never mind.
    • Yvette  •  5 months ago
You guys need to stop makeing a mess out of this,I think you both should not there they need to get some one else.
    • Janice  •  5 months ago
HA HA madonna you pompus witch someone called you out ! You have minimal talent at best and that lilttle bit you had is GONE.... retire and make clothes.
    • Kelly  •  5 months ago
really madonna is that all the entertainment they can get wow thats just pathetic
    • Frank  •  5 months ago
Billy Johnson Jr is obviously a liberal prick. Gene Simmons spoke facts, something that Lilly livered liberals cannot stand. Madonna is bluntly no good. I will go out on my lawn during halftime, and watch my grass grow.
    • Joseph  •  5 months ago
      I agree with Gene.
    • Daniel K.  •  5 months ago
I whole heartedly agree with you Gene, besides I could think of at least a dozen or more entertainment singer or groups that I would much rather hear at half time of the Super Bowl than a slut singer like Madonna......who hasn't she slept with????
    • David  •  5 months ago
coming from gene.....who cares what he thinks...
