January 16-22: Beyonce Pays Tribute To Etta James

After battling various ailments — dementia, kidney problems, and leukemia — for the last several years, legendary blues singer Etta James died at 73 Friday.

James's fans conveyed their regards in online posts and Beyoncé was among them. "This is a huge loss," the singer said in a statement posted on her website. "Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime."

Beyoncé had a special connection to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, having performed a number of tributes to the "At Last" singer over the years.

Beyoncé portrayed James in the 2008 film "Cadillac Records," which chronicled the life of music executive Leonard Chess and the artists signed to his label, Chess Records. Playing the tough, boisterous, and sometimes profane James forced Beyoncé to step outside of her comfort zone.

"Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist," she said about her performance, which won critical praise. "When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear the pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed."

Beyoncé also had an opportunity to serenade James with "At Last" at Live Fashion Rocks 2008. Before taking the stage, Beyoncé read a moving introduction about James's impact and closed it by extending personal thanks. Wearing a short-cropped platinum wig reminiscent of James's signature style, the contemporary R&B pop singer embodied James's spirit on stage. James was visibly moved when Beyoncé walked into the audience to sing directly to her.

Beyoncé received even more accolades when she sang "At Last" the following January for President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's first dance at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.

Set apart on a miniature stage amid the audience, Beyoncé set the tone, again doing justice to James's classic passionate love song.

Neighborhood Inaugural BallDespite Beyoncé's friendly rapport with James, the late singer expressed disappointment with the former Destiny's Child frontwoman singing her song for the president. A few weeks after the celebration, James lashed out at Beyoncé during a performance in Seattle.

Ironically, the day after the inaugural performance, James's son Donto said his mother actually liked the rendition. "She thought it was great," he told the New York Daily News.

Based on Beyonce's reaction to James's passing, the young superstar, who just had her first child, Blue Ivy, with husband Jay-Z has not held onto any potential hard feelings.

Yahoo! Music joins all of James's fans and sends our condolences to her family and friends. On another somber note, the wife of smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G. has filed for divorce.

But there's still some good news this week, especially for those who love reality TV music shows. "X Factor" viewers will be excited to know that judge L.A. Reid has signed a number of contestants to recording deals with Epic Records. Plus, the premiere singing competition "American Idol" made its return this week. Lastly, pop singer-songwriter Bruno Mars might have the most reasons to be happy as his pending drug charges were dropped.

There's room for every great singer, including Beyonce, who is more of a performer than an actual singer. Don't hate, just educate. Etta, probable did not dislike Beyonce, in her early years she was awesome, so she may have felt a bit of bitterness in her illnesses and all, but I don't believe it was real hatred for Beyonce.

I think beyonce did a great job in the movie - Cadallic Records where she portrayed Etta James. Perhaps, Etta was suffering from a bit of Dementia. Her own son said that Etta enjoyed Beyonce's redition of her song, which she sang to the President and Michelle Obama.

Etta James should have been the one singing her song to Obama, not Beyonce. Why not get the original when you can? Now it's too late.

I heard the president wanted her but Etta James was just too sick. Kudos to Mr. Pres. but I don't know how "B---h" got in there.

I see what you're saying WellBalanced... In addition, as a woman ages, her voice changes... maybe her voice or her health didn't allow her to perform for the president. With her past problems with alcohol and drugs, she probably didn't sound as sharp as she used to, certainly not up to singing at such a widely publicized event as the inauguration. Nothing against Etta James, she had a beautiful voice in her day.

You folks are gonna make Etta climb up out of her casket and slap some sense into you. Etta James and Beyonce didn't have a 'special bond'. You folks are trippin'.

If you're the biggest Beyonce fan, it just proves all your taste is in your mouth. Etta had TALENT. Beyonce has machinery/equiment to make herself sound as good as she gets...and that ain't so good. That tribute by her is a ruse to put herself in the spotlight. GET YOUR OWN DA$%# SONG AND LEAVE ETTA'S TO HER.

Wow, high praise indeed from a spoiled brat. I wonder if Etta James would have had her posse keep a worried father from seeing his life threatened premature baby at the hospital they way this pampered fool did.

Did not hear a single whimper or apology from her or her husband on how their child's birth RUINED every other parents special day at Lenox Hill Hospital. I don't begrudge them having money, but to do this on the day of other people's families birth is disgusting. Lost all respect for them.
    • supermom  •  4 months ago
She'll use anything to get publicity. The birth of her child, the death of another human being. Disgusting.

Etta James didn't like Beyonce. She chewed her out for singing her song without asking her. Is this the connection Beyonce is talking about?
    • Deb  •  Chicago, Illinois  •  4 months ago
Beyonce sucks...just mediocre. Etta was a classic...no one should ever sing At Last but her.
    • Linda  •  Southfield, Michigan  •  4 months ago
Rest in Peace, Etta. You are gone, but your music will live on FOREVER! Beyonce will be a "has been" and her credibility is fading FAST!!! She has no respect amongst real and true artists as it is....!

Etta was and wil always be great, Beyonce is just another flash in the pan. She will probably ride Etta's death, just to make another buck! But the media will make most of the talentless people something out of nothing.
