Rihanna's New Year just got better. The "We Found Love" pop star was named this week as the top ranking artist on Nielsen SoundScan's Top Ten Selling Digital Artists list.

WATCH Rihanna's music videos "You Are The One," "We Found More" and more

On the chart that tracks digital sales from July 4, 2004 to January 1, 2012, Rihanna is credited with selling 47.5 million units. A part of Rihanna's success can be attributed to her volume of works. She has released six albums, beginning with 2005's "Music of the Sun," over the course of the tracking period.

Rihanna is more than 5 million sold digital tracks ahead of her closest contenders, the Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Lady Gaga, who have each sold in the 42 million range. Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, Beyonce, Kanye West, and Britney Spears round out the top 10 list.

Despite Rihanna's overall ranking, she did not place, however, on the Top Ten Selling Digital Songs or Top Ten Selling Digital Albums lists. The Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga have two songs each on the digital songs ranking.

The Black Eyed Peas's "I Got A Feeling" is the top selling digital song with 7.6 million sales, and "Boom Boom Pow" is No. 4 with 6.2 million sales. Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and "Just Dance" hold the No. 2 and No. 3 slots with 6.5 and 6.4 million sales, respectively.

Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift earned double entries on the Top Ten Selling Digital Albums chart. Gaga's "Fame" is the fourth top selling digital album with 1 million units sold, and "Born This Way" is fifth with 877,000. Swift's "Fearless" is No. 7, having amassed digital sales of 785,000, and her most recent effort, "Speak Now," is No. 10 with 681,000.

Aside from the chart record announcements, the week was filled with couples news. Justin Timberlake's private December proposal to girlfriend Jessica Biel was revealed. Aretha Franklin opened up about her plans to wed boyfriend Willie Wilkerson, and Steven Tyler, 63, confirmed his engagement to Erin Brady, 38. Even Sinead O'Connor reconsidered ending her new marriage to Barry Herridge.

The week also saw Van Halen perform a VIP show in New York that offered a preview of what fans will see when they kick off their national tour in February. And Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon, and their infant twins's Aspen vacation was interrupted when Cannon was hospitalized for kidney problems.

Lady Gaga can sing better than most singers on that list *side eyes* Rihanna, Katy Perry, Britney Spears.
      • Becky 4 months ago
I totally agree. At least Gaga can sing!
    • Helary  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 months ago
There are still good singers today just only not as popular or discovered.
    • Helary  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 months ago
Lots of artists today are only famous because they are "hot" "sexy" or "beautiful" on the outside but when they sing live they suck even if the song is catchy. If auto tune was illegal there wouldn't be Rihanna, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, etc. They don't have great voices like Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, etc.

Rihanna is a pop singer not R&B.
      • ShaneP 4 months ago
I check on that on some websites and some of them said she's an R&B singer.
      • Holly 4 months ago
I know some people call her an R&B singer, but that is probably because most black female singers sing R&B. Her music is definitely not R&B. Compare it to Beyonce for example. Especially Beyonce's new CD. Does Rihanna sound more like Britney Spears or Beyonce? Not just her voice. The music in the background is pop.
      • Captain Obvious 4 months ago
Beyonce is more Pop than Rihanna by far and long. Some of the tracks on Rihanna's cds are very R&B like. There are hardly any true female R & B singers these days anyhow. Mary J Blige, occasionally Kelly Rowland, Alicia Keys, Vivian Greene - These are new-age R & B singers.

Image is everything, catchy tunes, relatable, that's all an artist need these days,
      • andrew c 4 months ago
and a catchy tune is bad how?....it's called music.....get a grip
      • Alex Loves Daniel 4 months ago
Hell, I wouldn't even say a catchy song is even a requirement...

Dumb. You hate the genre for the same reason any artist would- it's fake. It;s singers, or faces propped up by massively talented songwriting and production teams... problem being, Lady gaga and Eminem dominate in the genre, and they write their own songs.

        Just sayin

temptation, earth wind and fire, gap band, stevie wonder, smokey robinson, luther vandross, teddy p, etc that was music.

We Found Love's lyrics are really repetitive. why is this crap popular????
    • Daadsa  •  4 months ago
This is just my opinion.... but can the media stop focusing on this mind-rotting useless crap and start focusing on serious matters like the fact that the middle class may soon to stop being in existence. I'm a 16 year old kid that is actually tired of hearing about these celebrities that in no way influences my future in a positive way and I want to hear about the problems that the U.S. has and what we are doing to fix them....

Today's popular music is garbage and she is no exception. These punks don't even write their own music. They are just puppets who use technology to stay in tune.

I'm 25 but I am proud to have grown up when I did because I had so much more access to music. I remember scouring the internet for MySpace bands, turning the radio 0.2 and finding lesser known stations, searching through store soundtracks to find cool music. I also got exposed to international bands from places like Iran and Romania. I'm glad the soundtrack to my late teenhood/early 20s is so individualized. This would be much less possible if I grew up in a different time. As for mainstream music, I think the 80s beat out any decade.

Her fans are tone deaf-- my dog can howl better then she can sing

it always surprises me the number of "music critics" that declare hugely successful performers as talentless. i don't care for Aretha Franklin's singing. does that mean she is talentless? and why would a rapper be listed amomg singers? some of the rap "music" is catchy, but is it music? sounds like recitation to me. can p.diddy or whatever he calls himself now actually carry a tune? i don't mean that as a criticism. i hope he continues to be successful-.
btw who would you critics consider more talented: Beethoven or Mozart? personally, i like Vivaldi better. Brahms could put you to sleep, which i thimk he intended to do

guys she's giving a performance... it's a costume that doesn't need pants. Beyonce wore an identical costume for her glastonbury performance and you weren't asking about her #$%$ pants

This chick is the biggest no talent I've ever seen. I saw here with Eminem on a music awards show. She he had to sing one f...in line of music with barely any jump in range and she still couldn't sing in tune. Please get this no talent off the stage!!!!!!
