The New Now
  • St. Vincent is the name which multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Annie Clark records under. I heard her 2007 debut, Marry Me, and to be honest, I didn't knock me out. But now I find myself wishing I could track it down, because Actor, St. Vincent's recently released sophomore set, is exquisite. Check out this video for "Out of Work Actor," one of several fine tracks on the album.

As you heard in that clip, Clark's voice has an ethereal quality that's reminiscent of Tori Amos and Kate Bush. Yet her songs, filled with weird guitar and vocal effects and percussion, become more intense and stranger as they progress. Check out this mind-blowing live premiere of "The Strangers," Actor's opening track, for proof. You can take a listen to the studio version as well.

    The Strangers

The Tulsa, Oklahoma-born Clark dabbled in composition when she was still a teen, composing original music for her high school's production of Alice In Wonderland before joining her aunt and uncle, better known

  • Most bands would flinch at the prospect of opening up for Metallica at South By Southwest or playing Coachella while Morrissey is prancing about on the main stage, but Silversun Pickups aren't like most bands. The Los Angeles-based quartet consisting of singer/guitarist Brian Aubert, bassist Nikki Monninger, keyboardist Joe Lester, and drummer Christopher Guanlao have transcended early comparisons to the Smashing Pumpkins to become one of rock's brightest new attractions.

The band's just-released second album, Swoon, features the kick-ass first single "Panic Switch." The song has a nice mix of blistering guitars and a throbbing rhythm section. The breakdown that comes two-thirds of the way in, when Aubert sings, "I'm waiting, fading, floating away" repeatedly, before an explosion of guitar, will stick in your head for days. Check out the band's exclusive live performance below.

  • Glory, Glory, Gloriana?

Growing up, I was taught that honesty is the best policy. I bring that lesson to this blog. Several weeks ago it was suggested that I spotlight a new Nashville act called Gloriana. A former co-worker promoting the band emailed a cohort about the act. Eventually the email landed in my inbox. I'm all for helping out former co-workers, but there was one small problem. I took a look at the band's video clip for the single "Wild At Heart" and I didn't like it. Check it out below.

To me, that clip seems overly slick. It almost looks like a TV commercial or some sitcom version of what a new country band should sound and look like, and the members of the band are all so pretty. I like attractive people as much as anyone else, but that clip looks artificial to me. The song itself is OK, but nothing spectacular. It reminds me a bit of John Mellencamp's 1982 hit "Jack And Diane," but it too seems too slick and overproduced.

I filed Gloriana away in my mind, but then the band appeared on my radar

  • Jazz. It's a frightening word for someone that's been weaned on rock, pop, R&B, country and/or hip-hop. For God's sake, it's nearly as scary as classical. But fear not. Jazz can be your friend. I know that at times it seems overly complicated and tough to get your head around, especially that free-jazz improvisational stuff. Or at others, jazz seems utterly boring and uncool. (Sorry Kenny G, I'm writing about you and your smooth-jazz spawn here although I hear you're a great golfer.) Yet I'm here to tell you that jazz has its place in life and you can find it to be quite enjoyable if you play the right music to fit the right mood. It can also help you overcome adversity. As evidence, I now present Melody Gardot and before I give you some information on her background I invite you to enjoy this soothing little number titled "Baby I'm A Fool" from her acclaimed new album, My One And Only Thrill. Not only is the music sweet, but those who have a soft spot for sexy librarian types soaking

  • Fleet Foxes: TV Or Not TV?

There was a time when the cast of Saturday Night Live was referred to as "the Not Ready For Prime Time Players," an apt description for a group of up-and-coming comedians doing edgy comedy on late-night TV. Yet over the years, SNL went more mainstream with blockbuster and under-performing movie spinoffs, and former Not Ready For Prime Time Players became some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

SNL's musical guests have also been a mix of big stars and up-and-comers, from such superstars as Paul Simon, the Rolling Stones, Sting, etc. to occasional acts on the rise, such as Beck, the Shins and the Arcade Fire--which brings us the SNL's most recent musical guest, Fleet Foxes.

After releasing an EP and self-titled debut album on Sub Pop in 2008, Fleet Foxes have received much critical acclaim. Billboard's staff named it album of the year and U.K. publication Uncut recently bestowed its first-ever Uncut Music Award on the album, besting titles by Radiohead and Elbow.

    But does a soft-rock band,

  • It's always helpful when a band gives listeners a hint of what it sounds like in its name. Let's dissect Black Moth Super Rainbow as an example.

Black is generally thought to invoke darkness or gloom. A moth is a flying insect related to the far more beautiful butterfly (Boucher?) that's drawn to the light. A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon caused when the sun shines on moisture in the atmosphere. Rainbows offer hope and optimism. Leprechauns are said to hide their pots of gold at the end of a rainbow and Dorothy, in The Wizard Of Oz, famously sang "Over The Rainbow," a classic song of hope for a better world. Adding super to rainbow only makes it that much better. So, if we put that all together we can deduce that the music of Black Moth Super Rainbow starts in the darkness, but flies toward the light and then finds beauty and optimism in the super multi-colored phenomenon.

To see if that description matches the band's sound, have a listen to "Born On A Day The

  • It can be a good idea for a new act to release a cover version, especially if fans of the song's original performer might like the new artist. I experienced this phenomenon first hand when I heard Zee Avi's version of Morrissey's "First Of The Gang To Die." I was a big fan of the Smiths and still follow Mozzer to some extent. So, I was familiar with the track--which was Morrissey's love letter of sorts to his rabid Latino fanbase in Los Angeles--from his 2004 album You Are The Quarry.

Morrissey's original is a catchy tune propelled along with the traditional mix of electric guitars, drums, and that unmistakable croon. Avi took the song and stripped it down with just her voice and a lone acoustic guitar in a rendition that--dare I say--is even more sweet and tender (no hooligan here) than the original. Check out Avi's performance of the song live at an in-store at Fingerprints Music in Long Beach, California and you can also stream her album version below.

  • This space is usually reserved to spotlight fresh new talent on the rise. Today, however, for the first time-and hopefully the last-I'm going to pay tribute to a rising talent whose life was cut tragically short on Monday (May 18) as the result of senseless violence. His name was Roderick Anthony Burton II, but hip-hop fans know him better as Dolla. He was only 21. Before I climb atop my soapbox, take a look at Dolla's clip for the track "Make A Toast."

As you may have read, Dolla was fatally shot in the head on Monday (May 18) at the Beverly Center, a posh mall in West Hollywood, California, after an argument near the mall's valet parking stand. I'm not sure what the argument was about and it doesn't really matter, because no matter what the issue was, it's safe to say it was not more important than Dolla's life and the life of the alleged gunman, who police identified as Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, of Georgia. The shooting may have been prompted by an altercation between Dolla and other

  • Sometimes this hip-hop game can get a bit confusing for all but the hardcore followers. When I first heard the name Big B, I have to admit I confused him with Bun B, the incredibly successful rapper who was once half of UGK. (Why do I feel like I'm looking into a bowl of Alpha-Bits cereal?) Funny thing is, I was going to pretend that I had Bun B confused with Bun E. Carlos, the drummer in Cheap Trick and Tinted Windows and joke that Mr. Carlos must have a lot of time on his hands to launch a career as an M.C. right after unveiling Tinted Windows, but now that joke is completely played out. So, instead I'm going write about Big B--who. as far as I can tell--has absolutely nothing to do with Bun B and/or UGK, nor Bun E. Carlos, Cheap Trick and Tinted Windows.

Big B, however, does have some ties to some rockin' dudes. His current video/single is a track called "Sinner" and features a guest shot by Scott Russo of noted modern rockers and Big's Suburban Noize labelmates Unwritten Law. Check

  • In this crazy thing we call the music business, artists are always looking for some sort of angle to make them stand out. Allow me introduce you to Owl City. It's the moniker adopted by a 20something chap from Owatonna, Minnesota named Adam Young. He's another young artist that has made a splash on social networks and eventually landed a deal with a major label. In this case, Young was inked by Universal Republic, which released his latest single, "Hot Air Balloon." Check it out below.

    Hot Air Balloon

Unfortunately, we can't offer you a free download of that track, but it can be had through legitimate means free of charge on Owl City's website if you're willing to offer your email address in exchange. Owl City isn't doing anything too dramatic by giving away a single. Remember Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and, most recently, Coldplay have given away entire albums, and Owl City has yet to record anything as substantial as those acts. Yet there is an interesting twist here. Owl City plans
