Web Star Steph Jones Talks Soulful ‘Gravity’ Lifetape

StephJones could host a workshop for artists looking to market themselvesonline.

The R&B/pop singer and songwriter who has written forJordin Sparks, Blake Lewis and Jesse McCartney has created a solid web presencefor himself with coverage on numerous popular blogs, not to mention his own YouTube channel featuringseveral random moments.

You're likely to find him leading a group of frands (a termhe coined for friends and fans) on a hike through Los Angeles' Runyon Canyon ona G.U.M.B.O.excursion; visiting a dentistoffice in Norway; or goofing around in the studio with R&B great Angie Stone.Blogs regularly run photos of him hanging out with this "American Idol"-winningfriend Jordin Sparks, who many rumor starters peg to be his girlfriend.

The former Ford Models rep from Missouri City, Texashas appeared in videos for Destiny'sChild and FaithEvans. His MySpace pagehas received more than 2 million views.

Steph is using the platform to promote his new 14-song lifetape,"Gravity,"that features collabs with PJ Morton, Kumasi, and Audio Push. The title track is a cover of the John Mayer classic.

I was introduced to Steph's music last year when I heard hisinterpolation of "YouAre My Sunshine." I was impressed that he transformed the feel good melodyinto a stripped down, convincingly romantic ballad with an accompanying beachfront video.

Steph handled his share of hip-hop recordings when signed toLudacris' DTP, even singing the chorus to their 2007 posse record "CelebrityChicks" with Ludacris and Chingy.

Impatiently waiting for his street date, Steph asked to bereleased from his DTP deal so that he could pursue other opportunities. He hitthe ground running, taking his career into his own hands.

The "Gravity" lifetape is just an example. He's got a soliddose of soulful pop. With the right support his song "Shooting Star" could makehim a household name.

He recently stopped by the Yahoo! Music office to give methe rundown on "Gravity." Check out my video interview.
