  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O will premiere her new "psycho-opera" Stop the Virgens at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn on October 12th as part of the Creators Project multimedia arts series. "I'm hoping to create an original live experience. It should feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis," O said in a statement. "This piece isn't aiming to be all about spectacle or abstraction, though there is a good helping of both in the production."

The project, which was co-created by O along with design director KK Barrett, will be directed by Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp and feature musical direction by her YYYs bandmate Nick Zinner and frequent collaborator Sam "Squeak E. Clean" Spiegel. Other Karen O associates contributing to the show are YYYs drummer Brian Chase, actress Lili Taylor, keyboardist Money Mark and members of the Greenhornes and Raconteurs.

  • Remembering Aaliyah: 1979-2001

One late Saturday afternoon, just two weeks before her death, twenty-two-year-old Aaliyah walked from a black Mercedes-Benz to a small helicopter for a short flight from New Jersey to East Hampton, New York. She was on her way to the summer house that Jay-Z shared with her boyfriend of a year, Damon Dash, Jay's partner in Roc-a-Fella Records. She wore a dark-green hoodie and matching shorts so small they showed off most of her long, curvy legs, down to the little treble-clef tattoo on her right ankle. She wore all-white Nike Air Force Ones with white socks. Around her neck hung a small Roc-a-Fella pendant. In her left arm she clutched a large, fluffy pillow in a black pillowcase. She got on the helicopter, nuzzled into Dash's shoulder and went to sleep. I was there reporting a story on Jay-Z, and I was struck by Aaliyah's presence, the way she was in person, as she was onstage - sexy without losing her girlish sweetness. Throughout the weekend, she was quiet but not quite shy, quick to

Tedder, clearly a big fan of specialty bourbons and smoked meats, has already opened a second location with restaurant founder Eytan Sugarman in the Hell's Kitchen restaurant.

"I have been involved with Southern Hospitality BBQ in New York for some time, and I'm looking forward to taking this relationship to the next level," Tedder said in a statement released on Monday.

  • Soul legend Syl Johnson is upset that he has not received proper credit for a sample of his song "Different Strokes" on Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaborative album Watch the Throne. In a post on the Numero Group site, the label explains that "The Joy," a track on the record which was originally slated to appear as a bonus track on a scrapped deluxe edition of West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, was credited to the label - who did not publish the song - rather than Johnson.

According to Numero Group, a non-binding clearance deal was arranged by email with Island Def Jam last year, but when the deluxe edition plans fell through, the label group stopped responding to emails and phone calls. Even though the song had not yet been commercially released, both Numero and Johnson considered legal action, which they ultimately decided against, reasoning that West would eventually need to clear something else from their catalog and could use this incident as leverage.

  • The Sunset Junction Street Fair, a music festival that has been running annually in Los Angeles since 1980, has been officially canceled after the city's Board of Public Works denied organizers permits to hold the event this weekend. The five-member panel unanimously rejected pleas from promoters who failed to produce $141,000 in fees to cover the event.

The festival, which was to include sets by stylistically disparate acts such as Hanson, the Butthole Surfers, k.d. lang, Peaches, Bobby Womack and the Melvins, is now entirely scrapped. It is unknown whether or not the artists, promoters or volunteers will be compensated.

The Sunset Junction organizers owed the city $400,000 in unpaid fees for the 2010 and 2011 events. The nonprofit Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance faxed a document showing that they had received a $100,000 loan from the concert promoter Live Nation to bail them out of the mess, but Board president Andrea Alarcon dismissed the gesture, saying that it was not an

  • As Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison dug through their archives to assemble the Beatles Anthology documentary in the mid-Nineties, Harrison made a private vow to his wife, Olivia: "One day, I'll do my own anthology." The ex-Beatle, who died in 2001, never got the chance, but his wife made sure his wish came true in grand fashion. In October, HBO will debut Martin Scorsese's two-part documentary, George Harrison: Living in a Material World - and Olivia has compiled a lavish companion book packed with unseen photos and diary entries. "I'm fairly awed by what Marty has put together," says Olivia. "It's a story that truly captures the essence of George."

The project had its start in 2005, when Olivia attended the London premiere of Scorsese's Bob Dylan documentary, No Direction Home. She shared her hope for a similar movie about her husband with the film's producer, Nigel Sinclair. After discussing possible directors for months, the pair "delicately approached" Scorsese. "To

  • Last year, Bob Weir told Rolling Stone why Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann weren't part of the new Dead offshoot band Furthur. "Phil [Lesh] and I were boldly pursuing new musical directions onstage, and some of the guys weren't picking up on it," Weir said. "Phil and I are way more current."

Hart and Kreutzmann declined to comment at the time, but when Hart stopped by Rolling Stone last week to discuss his new band, we reminded him what Weir had said. "I don't really have any comment on that," said Hart - who proceeded to spend the next three minutes commenting on it. "You shouldn't read too far into that. It's really hard to say who is current and who is not. I mean, it's a very weak argument. I would just think that would be a slip of the tongue on Bob's part. If he were here right now, we'd probably be laughing about it," Hart said - laughing.

Hart continued: "It doesn't really make sense. I mean, it's almost ludicrous. I'd like to say, 'Bob, are you more

  • Evanescence fans have been waiting five years for the band to release a new album - so it's no surprise that lead singer Amy Lee is obsessed with getting their third release right. Before heading to Toronto's Liberty Studios last night for a playback session of five fully mastered tracks, she spent the morning tweaking songs on Evanescence, which comes out October 11th and was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush).

"I literally was just refining one last mix while we were getting ready and that's why I'm 15 minutes late. Up until the very end, it's like, 'Wait! One more thing! One more tiny little thing!'" Lee told Rolling Stone.

At Liberty, though, she seemed excited about finally sharing the new music with the crowd of around 30. "We've just been working really hard for a long time on this record and we're totally proud of it and excited to be touring again," she said as the listening session began.

The singer/pianist then went into a small control room and began playing

  • Lady Gaga has recorded a guest appearance for an upcoming episode of The Simpsons. The singer will turn up in an episode titled "Lisa Goes Gaga," in which the superstar comes to Springfield after learning that the entire town is suffering from poor self-esteem.

Gaga told Entertainment Weekly that she felt a bit overwhelmed and intimidated when she stopped by the Simpsons studio to record her parts. "I make music, but I don't do voice-overs every day of the week, and their characters are so awesomely convincing and sincere and wild and funny, I had to remind myself constantly of the sincerity of the humor," says the pop queen. "That's what I was trying to focus on, not putting on a character too much and really being as sincere as I could with the lines."

Nevertheless, she is extremely excited about guest starring on the show, which has been on the air since she was two years old. "I would say this is one of the coolest things I've ever done," says Gaga.

  • A coalition of 35 Michael Jackson fan clubs have joined forces to lobby for the cancellation of Michael Forever: A Tribute Concert, an event featuring performances by Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson and Cee Lo Green scheduled for October 8th in Wales. Beyoncé will also contribute to the concert with a performance beamed in via satellite.

In an open letter to concert organizer Global Live Events, the King of Pop's fans criticized the timing of the show, which coincides with the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray for involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson, and expressed confusion over the event's charitable donations and high ticket prices.

The letter also attacked Global Live Events for their no-guarantee policy regarding performers and took the company to task for booking Kiss, a band whose bassist Gene Simmons had publicly attacked Jackson, even though the band was removed from the bill last week.
