Coffee, Tea…Or Gaga? Flight Attendants Safety-Dance To Pop Hits

Airlines are slashing amenities left and right these days--legroom, blankets, check-on baggage allotments, peanuts, and free meals are now pretty hard to come by in the not-so-friendly skies--but luckily the Philippines' Cebu Pacific Airlines hasn't cut back on its in-flight entertainment, judging by a new viral video currently flying around the Interweb faster than a Concord.

In the cute and funny clip, Cebu flight attendants choreograph what would otherwise be a dull safety demonstration to pop hits by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. The smiling stewardesses demonstrate proper seatbelt-fastening techniques and life-vest deployment to Gaga's "Just Dance," then show off their coordinated oxygen-mask-fastening skills and point out the nearest exits while shimmying in their retro-mod orange uniforms to "California Gurls."

Yes, apparently electronic devices are still forbidden on flights, but electronic music is perfectly fine. In fact, with the monotonic, Max Headroom-esque voice reciting Cebu's safety instructions on top of the Lady and Katy songs, the effect is like one cool techno mashup. We wouldn't be surprised if clever DJs start spinning the "Cebu Megamix" in Philippines airport lounges pretty soon.

Obviously this clip makes for a better Cebu advertisement than any legitimate big-budget commercial could ever provide. Which begs the question: Was this video planted online by Cebu? Quite possibly.

Case in point: The amused passenger who uploaded this onto YouTube, "wingco1129," only joined YouTube yesterday (the day this clip was apparently shot), and has no other videos on his/her YouTube channel. Additionally, winco1129's description accompanying the video says [sic], "something interesting happened on my Cebu pacific flight this afternoon. the FAs suddenly burst into a dance!!! that was soooo cooool!!!" But if wingco was really so surprised (assuming he/she is not a frequent Cebu flier)...then how did he/she know to have the camera at the ready and to hit record right when the first notes of "Just Dance" were played? Huh?

So yes, this was probably staged. But if so...who cares? Clearly the marketing execs over at Cebu are geniuses. And beside, these attendants are actually getting passengers to pay attention to safety demonstrations for once, and they're making the skies just a little friendlier (and funkier). So everyone wins.

I'd have to jump out of the plane if I had to listen to lady gaga and katy perry.

I think this is a nice change. People usually just ignore the safety information but I'm sure everyone was watching on this flight. It's rather fun, even if you're not a fan of Lady Gaga's music, it just makes a nice change.

It's a lot funnier when drag queens are doing it.

Years ago I was on a short commuter flight where the FA actually took the standard safety disclaimer and made a standup routine out of it "In case of water landing your seat cushion may be used as a flotation device, and kept afterwards with our compliments". Despite seeing that crew numerous times afterward she never did that again - too bad as it was fabulous!

      I am not saying I know what a lap dance is; but if I did know;
this would have to be the next best thing to it!
And for my ole buddy Phong N. For a lady looking that good; why would you care who is singing.
Heck I would even pay for bags to fly. Sorry Southwest.
      LOL!

As a former FA I think this is great! Everyone stopped to pay attention and yeah, listening to Lady Gaga or Katy Perry may not be everyone's cup 'o tea but everyone stopped to pay attention. That's the point. In the US they would be told to stop! 'Member the old Southwest Airlines and their funny PSA's? Remember..Flight attendants are there to save you and if they could put vending machines on the plane believe me, THEY WOULD!

That is a good marketing strategy specially there is a close competition among airlines in the Philippines. Airline companies in the Philippines are picky in choosing a flight attendant. You need to be presentable, i mean "good looks" and you need to pass the height requirement because most of the Filipinas are short.

what if the flight attendant is not a skinny 15 years old, what do they play??

This is more dumb stuff they have women doing. We look so stupid dancing on an airplane! We wonder why men just keep talking about us in terms of sex - look at the comments generated here after watching the clip. I guarantee you that men thought of this.

that is Philippine's carrier, it looks cool but is it safe to fly with it ?

Staged or not it uses visual, aural, mental, AND libido stimulation to keep people's attention during a life saving presentation. It might save a life in an emergency situation... at least it is free entertainment. (at least for now)

We get singing on my flights on southwest. They are really cute. Makes for a happier flight....and they are real...everyone enjoys them.

um, k, so now we have to listen to forced music? And although that's cute, I'd rather it be more serious than that...it's teaching people to be safe, not have fun and be distracted by dancing...

I think this is a great idea. I know on almost every flight I've been on when those women come in the lane, people are reading, talking or just ignoring them. This would catch your attention and you might hear something you wouldn't have otherwise. It was fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it. I'm flying wherever they're going! Two thumbs WAYYY up!

it was awkward for me though entertaning. and i don't think the message about safety will be remembered.
