    Partying Like It’s 1981: MTV’s First 10 Videos

Thirty years ago MTV aired its first video, the Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star." It was an apt choice, even though radio continued to cruise for another 20 years, until XM Radio and the Internet finally stamped it dead. MTV was the last great musical revolution. It kept this high school kid home on many afternoons when I should have been in class. It was the last time I cut school or work for anything.

What a difference 30 years makes.

This Monday, August 1, MTV celebrated its 30th birthday. It might as well have been the 30th birthday of KMET. Remember KMET? Of course you don't. It's an old Los Angeles classic-rock radio station. And it's dead. Dead just like radio. Dead just like MTV. The revolution is long over, and MTV is just another in a long line of corporate stooges trotting out corporate stooge bands trying to pass themselves off as something anti-establishment. It's filled with a bunch of reality nothingness celebrating a life of consumerism. The "M" used to stand for "music." Now it stands for "meaningless." EmpTV. Empty. It's all one self-conscious, soulless bore.

Ah, but on August 1, 1981, it was magic. Nothing but '80s video goodness and the whole world in front of us. Big hair, padded shoulders, and lots of guitar hooks. Here are the first 10 videos played that day in order. Let the good times roll.

    1. THE BUGGLES "Video Killed The Radio Star"

Ground zero for MTV. Co-founder Trevor Horn would go onto future MTV successes with the bands Yes and Art Of Noise.

    2. PAT BENATAR "You Better Run"

Born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski, Pat and her lead guitar player, Neil Giraldo, would marry in 1982. They're still together and they still rock.

    3. ROD STEWART "She Won't Dance"

Rod the Mod was pushing 40 when MTV debuted in 1981. He was recycling his old band Faces on this tune, but who knew?

    4. THE WHO "You Better You Bet"

Another veteran act that had an early-'80s MTV makeover. Kenney Jones was on drums replacing the dearly departed Keith Moon. Coincidentally, Kenney was in Faces with Rod Stewart. Six degrees of Rod...

    5. Ph.D "Little Suzi's On The Up"

Going for the cred factor, MTV aired a video from a one-hit wonder U.K. band consisting of two former members of the Jeff Beck Group. Tesla covered the tune in 1986.

    6. CLIFF RICHARD "We Don't Talk Anymore"

This one rounded out the trio of videos from slowly aging rock dudes. Cliff Richard was the ripe age of 41 when he made his MTV debut. He was a major heartthrob in the U.K., but in the U.S.? Not so much.

    7. THE PRETENDERS "Brass In Pocket"

Chrissie Hynde was my first rock crush. She wrote the book for rock bad girls. This video was the best thing on MTV that first day. It's still one of the best things the channel ever aired.

    8. TODD RUNDGREN "Time Heals"

The former Utopia frontman was pushing the limits of early music video production on Day One, with lots of pre-computer trickery that inspired a generation of Mac users.

    9. REO SPEEDWAGON "Take It On The Run"

"Heard it from a friend who..."  What can I even say about this? What would the '80s be without REO?

    10. STYX "Rockin' The Paradise"

What's the only thing better than a slammin' REO riff? Some Styx concept-album rock. It's no Tommy, but it's got that classic rock bombast. Only two years later, Styx would up the ante with 1983's "Mr. Roboto." YES!!!

sorry to those posters that claim that there's a lot of good music out there right now...there's very little...very very little.what made part of the music scene great in the 80's was the fact that so many types of music were popular.on 80's mtv you saw pop, mainstream rock, metal, and even jazz(harry connick jr for example)as well as the manhattan transfer..there's no such thing today as various formats.the pop today borders on hip hop and what little rock there is today is nothing that stands out./i've bought bruno mars newest cd which isn't bad..evanescence has gone downhill terribally..we are the fallen had one cd and it was okay but after that?? these are those here and there bands that sound good amongst the thousands that don't.and even THEY begin to sound horse #$%$ after a short while.so no...today's music scene cannot compare to the 80;s and what it had to offer on a continuos basis.///rap and hip hop totally cursed MTV with crappy lyrics and jungle beat repetition. 80's songs were diverse.an album didn't just carry on with song after song having the same beat, tempo ,etc etc..every song was different than the last on an LP or CD back then./lady gaga and pink and fergie and the blackeyed peas didn't bring about any change in that area.and so 21st century radio and recording artists will remain in lame limbo/until somebody revives the sounds of the 80's again(imo)

This is when MTV was great. Now it just stinks, they should just take it off of television. I dont know how it went from being great and inovative to being horrible and all about reality. I am so glad that VH1 Classic is doing a MTV 30 weekend because for someone like me who loves 60s-80s music and thats all I listen to and I wasnt around back then it will be great to see. All the classic mtv I have seen is what i can find on youtube. "I Want My MTV Back!!" I am sure alot of others agree.

Wow, this is when MTV was great. Now its horrible. It should RTV for reality but m meaning meaningless is also a good way to put it. I am so watching the MTV weekend tomorrow on VH1 Classic as I'm sure most of us will. I wasnt around when MTV first came out sense I was born in the early 90's so for someone like me who listens to nothing but 60's 70's and 80's music, this will be awesome.

They're hard to take seriously now, ADB, but back then it was a revolution. I miss what MTV used to be. In the 80s and 90s, they were great, but now they're a joke.

I watched Mtv a little as a kid. Nina Blackwood from 4a.m. to 8a.m. Alan Hunter from 8a.m. to 1p.m. JJJ Jessie Jackson from 1p.m. to 6p.m. Martha Quinn from 6 to 11 and Marc Goodman from 11p.m. to 4a.m. Man those were awesome times!

I was just about to turn 25 when MTV started up. I must admit that I spent entirely too much time watching this,at the time ,very innovative blend of music and mini-stories by the artists of the time.
*Sigh* Brings back a lot of memories. You're only young once!

Man this takes me back to when it was great to be a kid, MTV sucks now. need to bring back rock and be great once more.
MTV was founded on rock, why they turned their back----money, money, and more money. sad how that makes everything suck.

Thank you so very much for your scathing evaluation of what a complete piece of @#$% MTV has become. While I didn't become a regular MTV lover until 1983, what I remember of the station was the wonderfully innovative video creations, the gratuitous boobs of wonderful VanHalen videos, those sexy chicks in the ZZ Top videos and all the great music. The station was getting its feet wet, trying new things, giving an outlet to creative directors with a passion for their craft (and some really horrible directors too) but most of all just having a great time revolutionizing the way we all "saw" music.

Sadly if I ever wish to see any of those great videos anymore I have to pay my scum cable company EXTRA money to watch VH1 Classics or try to remember them all and watch them on YouTube - not a bad alternative.

Thanks for taking me back to when cable stations actually cared about entertainment and not just about producing the next bottom-of-the-barrel reality show as today.

All the kids under 20 probably think the 80's music sucks, because it didn't have Lady Ga Ga, Justin Beiber, Mylie Cyrus or The Fray. I feel so sorry for you younger kids now days, you have my deepest sympathy for missing out on good music, and growing up with todays CRAP!
