The Y! Music Playlist Blog
  • Human beings have looked up to the night sky to ponder the moon since we first stood upright. For thousands of years it was a complete mystery, and even worshiped as a God. Today we know a heck of a lot more about this barren celestial body that orbits our home. And even though we've walked upon it's surface, it still continues to inspire us.

There are literally thousands of songs that have been written about, or inspired by the moon. No one has the time to listen to a comprehensive list of moon songs. So, to help cut the list down, I've filtered it by selecting only quality, acoustic-based tracks. This filtering helps create a consistent experience that lends itself well to the subject matter.

The playlist contains over 2.5 hours of music from many genres, but the acoustic guitars, pianos and strings tie it all together.

    The Playlist:

    1. Moonshadow - Cat Stevens

    2. Harvest Moon - Neil Young

    3. Pink Moon - Nick Drake

    4. Jealous Of The Moon - Nickel Creek

    5. Moon On My Shoulder -

  • Martin "Zero" Hannett is a legendary figure, partly do to his creative production work on many influential records by the likes of Joy Division, The Buzzcocks, Magazine, New Order, The Stone Roses and others, and partly do to his eccentric, hedonistic behavior and lifestyle, peppered by heroin addiction.

Hannett helped to mold the sound that came out of Manchester, England in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He played bass with the Mandalaband, which eventually became Sad Cafe, but it was his production work that lives on past his death from heart failure on April 18, 1991.

In the late 70's Hannett was excited about introducing electronic synthesizers, even though they were facing opposition from rock & roll purists. It was Martin who convinced Joy Division to add synthesizers to their landmark album Unknown Pleasures. If you ask me, this fact alone is enough to land him a chapter in the book of rock & roll history.

  • divorce.jpgdivorce.jpgI would not wish a divorce on my worst enemy, but if you become an unfortunate statistic on the battlefield of love then I may have the soundtrack for you.

This playlist contains a perfect collection of songs for your next divorce or breakup party. There are literally thousands of separation songs sung from a "woe-is-me" perspective. And if that's what you're looking for, this is not the playlist for you.

The majority of the songs found here are empowering and spiteful. When you're going through a divorce you don't need melancholy music to drive you further to depression. What you need are songs that tell it like it is, and lay the blame squarely on your ex, truth be damned. Snide remarks and an independent spirit hit the spot when you're heartbroken and these songs may be just what the doctor ordered.

So get some good friends together, put this list on, then lift a glass and a middle finger. You have my word, it will get better.

I'm not what you would call a big iPod fan. Sure, Apple makes great products with fantastic interfaces, but their proprietary approach and buisness model is far from being ideal.  For me the subscription model rules. I can take anything with me for an insignificant monthly fee, and when I discover a truly worthy album, I buy the CD. This way I can rip non-protected MP3 files at the quality I desire, get the cover art, liner notes, and keep the original CD as a back up.

However, I do not fall into the iPod-hater camp either. Apple has found their market, and it's a huge one. And their continued dominance in the space demonstrates this fact. Another thing I give Apple credit for is the music they've selected to promote iPod and iTunes since their first commercial aired back in October of 2001.

Many of us have been mesmerized by at least one song featured in iPod commercial at some point in time. And I have asked on many occasions, "Who sings that?" when a new iPod ad appears on my

  • Weightless Songs

This playlist features an album's worth of weightless music. Meaning, it's composed of songs both titled "weightless" and that have an overall feeling of weightlessness.

It's an interesting study in songs where the title has a direct correlation to the mood. If you were to meditate on what the word "weightless" might sound like in song, you would likely imagine music exactly like that found in this playlist.

Airy and mellow ambient tracks highlight the list, and offer a glimpse of what it would feel like to be floating in space. You've probably heard of artists like Brian Eno, Mike Oldfield, Thomas Dolby and Enigma who contribute fine weightless tracks to the playlist, but the other six tracks are by artists who you've probably never heard of.

However, all the artists contained here share the same general idea when it came to penning their own interpretations of what "weightless" sounds like.

So get your anti-gravity suit out and float on.

  • Ode To Alaska

alaska.jpgalaska.jpgAs some of you may know, my brother Joe and his family have moved to Alaska while my brother works on a medical airlift team. A seriously cool job, the kind you only hear about on Discovery Channel documentaries.

I was trying to determine when and how to get out there for a visit. Alaska has been a place I've always wanted to see for it's natural beauty. But unfortunately, I couldn't make it happen this summer due to work and other travel commitments.

As I live vicariously through my brother's blog, it hit me that I have yet to create a playlist for our largest and most pristine state. So I started searching through our never ending library of tracks for songs about Alaska. There were a few no-brainers like Johnny Horton's "North To Alaska" and the excellent "Talkin' Goin' To Alaska Blues", which appears on Shawn Mullins latest effort 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor.

The playlist contains other well-done songs inspired by Alaska, but I was soon to discover that songs about Alaska are not
