The Y! Music Playlist Blog
  • We all know that Morrissey has inspired generations of teenage mope-rock fans, so this playlist was inevitable.

It compiles songs by Morrissey or the Smiths, that are death-centric.

The end result is the ultimate Morrissey mix tape.

Stephen Patrick Morrissey is well-known for his dark and witty lyrics dealing with depression, isolation, insecurity and death.

This morbid curiosity has contributed to his huge following among maladjusted youth, and continues to find new markets, most recently in the Latino community. To the point where some refer to L.A. as Moz Angeles for the massive contingent of Latino Morrissey fans.

Morrissey has been a controversial figure throughout his career for his politics, his ambiguous sexuality, and his public fights with other famous musicians, but he is still very much loved by millions.

This playlist looks at the subject of death through Morrissey's eyes.

Death by guillotine, drowning, air disaster, 10-ton truck, serial killer and much more.

  • coffeepaper.jpgcoffeepaper.jpgFor many Christians across the world, Sunday is a day for rest as dictated by God. For those of us in the western world, Sunday is the last day of the weekend. For those in school, Sunday is always a welcomed day off. In other words, Sunday is a great day for most, as it can be dedicated to leisure. It's the day we can wake up late, and enjoy a cup of coffee with the Sunday paper.

The name "Sunday" predates Christianity and comes from Egyptian culture, and any month beginning on a Sunday will contain a Friday the 13th. Sunday also holds significance here in the United States during this time of year for the NFL football games played during the season.

In music, you'll be hard-pressed to find songs that were written specifically about Sunday. However, the day is mentioned in thousands of great songs and can be used to convey many of the ideals associated with Sunday. For this playlist I have selected only the very best tracks that contain the word "Sunday" somewhere in the song title.

  • Popular music is filled to the brim with superficial songs about sex, drugs and money, but it can also be used to uplift, or present a philosophy lesson within the confines of a three to four minute song.

One of the best things music can do is to lift us up, or help us think about how to be better people.

For this playlist I wanted to select the top 20, positive "feel good" songs in popular music. Not just happy songs mind you, but songs that can be used much like a self-help book. The lessons contained in these 20 tracks can be viewed as enlightening, or sappy, depending on your point of view. But they all offer valuable lessons for life.

rainbow.jpgrainbow.jpgI have tried to ignore the fact that some of these songs have been overplayed, or have not aged well, and instead focused on selecting tracks with an overwhelmingly positive message. Many of the artists who made the cut are worthy of more than one track, but I have chosen to limit the list to contain only one song per artist.

    I have ranked the top

Heroin is a drug known to have been used by many creative people in history, heavy metal musicians included. But the drug has roots in almost any musical genre you can think of. Many songs have been written under its influence, or about it's effects and culture.

For this playlist I focused on heavy metal bands, many of them with their own history of heroin addiction. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has admitted using the drug, Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Alder and guitarist Slash nearly overdosed on Mr. Brownstone, as did members of Motley Crue.

Heck, I could go on for hours about heroin in the world of heavy metal.

One of the problems with the drug is the high risk of overdose. Because it's sold in an illegal and unregulated manner, a user never really knows how strong of a dose they are actually taking. Heroin is cut differently by different dealers. So if a junkie is used to a certain amount of the drug, and they change dealers, it could mean a purer product is injected, resulting in

"Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I'm too much of an erratic, moody baby! I don't have the passion anymore, and so remember, it's better to burn out than to fade away.

    Peace, love, empathy.
    Kurt Cobain

Frances and Courtney, I'll be at your alter.
Please keep going Courtney, for Frances.
For her life, which will be so much happier without me."

So ended the suicide note of Kurt Cobain, one of the most influential artists of the 1990s. On April 5, 1994 Kurt Cobain put a shotgun to his head and pulled the trigger while he was whacked out on heroin. (unless that is, you believe the murder conspiracy theories). Although his wildly popular rock band Nirvana are considered the pinnacle of the grunge movement, they only released 3 full-length albums of new material in their short life.

It's hard to put into words how much influence Kurt Cobain had on music, attitudes and culture. Many consider Nirvana the band that

  • There's a fine line between genius and insanity, and some of the greatest songwriters to ever live have walked this line. In addition, the subject of mental illness has inspired many great songs.

For this playlist I focused exclusively on Classic Rock, and have come up with 30 tracks that speak about, or have been inspired by some form of mental disease.

Medical science has made great strides in understanding and treating mental illness in the past decade. However, it's still behind in relation to advances in the treatment of other medical conditions. Today there are 374 recognized mental illnesses, and major mental illness includes clinical depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. These four major areas of disease account for the highest percentage of disability in the United States, even over cancer and heart disease.

At just over 2 hours, this playlist reveals attitudes about mental illness within the world of classic rock and includes the

Everyone has a different perspective on death. Most believe in an afterlife, whether in the traditional religious sense, or in a more personal, non-conforming way.

Others do not buy into an afterlife, and believe death is truly "The End". One thing that the majority of believers and non-believers agree on is that death sucks.

With the exception of a small minority of fundamentalist freaks, no one looks forward to death. It's human nature to survive at all costs.

The fear of death has inspired many songs in the history of popular music. Some of them face it head on and with honesty, while others deny any fear with a flash of bravado. Songs that speak on the subject of death usually acquire even more power when the artist passes on.

This playlist features 23 of the very best tracks I could find that have been inspired by the fear of death (or lack thereof). From the classic blues of Rev. Gary Davis, Bukka White and Blind Lemon Jefferson, to the timeless Americana of Johnny Cash, June

Progressive rock fascinates me. Especially the stuff created during the genre's 1970's peak. Grown men in tight jumpsuits and capes playing incredibly complicated music with amplified rock instruments is just not something I find easy to pass up.

Although the lyrics are a big part of the prog rock scene, sometimes you just wanna strip away all the talk about spaceships, hobbits and astral travel and get straight to the music. This desire was the spark which ignited this collection of prog rock instrumentals.

Prog rock (or art rock, as some call it) is a form especially loved by musicians for the technical skill required to perform it. The style also tends to have a psychedelic element, and is unafraid of experimentation. It continues today with torch-carriers like The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria. Splinter genres include progressive metal, avant-progressive rock and neo-progressive.

This lyric-less 19 track playlist contains some of the biggest names in progressive rock,

  • Sometime around the turn of the century, circa 1999 - 2000, a website called Mullets Galore caught fire and was soon the subject of water cooler talk in offices across the nation.

If you ask me, this distraction was a contributing factor to the dot com bust. What could be funnier than that photo of the basketball playing midgimullet? How much VC was spent on paying whole departments to surf Mullets Galore? Ah, the flush years...

Anyway I digress, the mullet, for those in a coma since 1999, is simply a haircut that is short on the sides and long in the back. The style is strongly associated with the demographic most likely to attend a truck pull, be arrested for domestic violence and drive a hand-painted Camaro.

Billy Ray Cyrus in particular, helped the order of the crimson nape claim the mullet as their defining hairstyle. However, a little time spent revisiting photographs of 80's bands, especially new wave bands, reveals that the mullet was once embraced by a higher echelon of

  • getup.jpggetup.jpgThe Godfather of Soul, James Brown, is also the Grandfather of Hip-Hop. He is without any doubt, the most sampled artist in music. His entrancing beats and infectious personality were a match made in heaven for hip-hop producers who have cut his work up and spit it back out into a completely new American-born art form.

James Brown's high-powered shrieks, tightly defined horns, and downright stank-ass funkiness are bricks in the foundation upon which hip-hop was constructed. Without these, the house would not have become what it is today, if it was built at all. The list of James Brown songs that have been sampled is long indeed.

For this playlist we start with a James Brown original "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" from his 1986 compilation In The Jungle Groove, which was voted number 330 of the top 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This 7 minute and 5 second funkfest features signature James Brown repetition that is perfect for the hip-hop DJ. It also
