  • Valentine's Day is wonderful for people in love. But for the lonely, or those going through a breakup, it can be a horribly rough day. Although some people might rate alcohol or chocolate high on the must-have list of the broken-hearted, nothing helps people connect with the emotional aftermath of love lost better than music. And broken hearts have been the foundation for thousands of great songs.

    Out of pain comes art.

We all have our favorite "sad songs", but when it comes to creating a list based on sales and popularity, there's one authority... Billboard. This year, Billboard has compiled a list of the all-time top 30 heartbreak songs in popular music history. The list is based on the performance of heartbreak songs in the Hot 100 since its inception in 1958. So the below are indeed the top 10 most important heartbreak hits according to Billboard's chart data.

After you check out the top 10 below be sure to peruse  all 30 over at Billboard.

What would be on your list of the top heartbreak songs ever written?

  • This week, in honor of Valentine's day, I've been putting together little packages of conversation hearts. To create one, just select a band and find song titles in their repertoire that would fit on a candy conversation heart. Meaning, they should be songs that fit both the theme of Valentine's day, and the limited space available on a candy heart. Some day I may try to get some licenses and do these myself. Seems like a great thing for music fans to give to their romantic counterparts.

But while we wait, enjoy these virtual versions.

Let's begin with an easy one: U2. This playlist includes my top ten U2 song choices for a U2 branded  box of conversation hearts.

What would be in your U2 candy heart box?

  • I there's one band that reminds me of my college years, it's The Cure. The band's music will always have a special place in my collection. The Cure have always been incredibly melodic, with multiple hummable melodies coming in what seems like every song they produce. But in addition to the glimmering sound that Robert Smith & Co. have forged, the music of The Cure is hopelessly romantic. If we were to compare bands to the works of Shakespeare, there would be no hesitation in naming The Cure the Romeo & Juliet of rock.

This is a band that could certainly market their own box of candy hearts on Valentine's day. This playlist includes my top 10 Cure song picks for conversation hearts.

What would be in your Cure candy heart box?

  • superbowl-trophy-thumbThe energy at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana tonight at around 6:30 will be electrifying as the New England Patriots face the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. Viewership for the Super Bowl is astronomical. Last year, Super Bowl XLV broke the record for the total number of U.S. viewers with an audience of over 111 million people. It was the most the most watched television broadcast of any kind in U.S. history.

Yep, the super bowl is a big deal.

    A really big deal.

People who don't even follow football tend to watch the Super Bowl because of the excitement wrapped up in the event. Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial American holiday with Super Bowl parties happening on every block, and screams of delight, or agony, ringing out whenever a great play happens.

The Super Bowl's incredible influence has not gone unnoticed among songwriters. For this playlist I've pulled together 10 hip-hop tracks that mention the Super Bowl by name.

  • FebruaryFebruary can be a tough month. The holiday decorations are put away and all the celebration is just a memory. Everyone is back to the daily grind while winter lingers on. February may be the most dreadful month of all, and sometimes I wonder if this is why Valentine's Day was placed smack dab in the middle of the month -- to give us a glimmer of hope.

Even the word February comes from the Latin februum, which means "purification".

But there is hope, because winter will end, flowers will bloom, and we will once again be out of the house enjoying the sunshine.

    It's not too far away.

Right now there are babies in bellies of their mother who will be born on February 29, 2012. These will be the newest crop of leap babies, who will only see their birthdate once every fours year. We get this extra day every four years only because we need to adjust the calendar to account for the fact that the Earth does not revolve around the sun in exactly 365 days.

This playlist includes 10 songs inspired by the month of February.

  • HateValentine's Day is just around the corner and it's the time of year when playlisters are living on Easy St.  The possibilities for Valentine's Day lists are almost endless. After all, love is by far, the most popular subject of song. It has always been that way and always will be. The muse of love simply reigns supreme in the creative arts. But what about the other side of the coin? And I don't mean sad love songs, or the songs born from a broken heart, but those that are completely grounded in hatred for another person?

Well, these songs certainly exists, but thankfully, they're much fewer in number. If you're the type that likes to go against the grain this may be a playlist for you. Or, if you need to send a message to someone who has really done you wrong, this may be a great playlist for you to burn on a CD and mail to your enemy. It won't carry a jail sentence like what you would receive if you chose to mail a horse head, or bag of excrement.

This playlist includes 10 tracks that have hatred for another person at their core. And although many of the artists listed here are no-brainers (i.e.: G.G. Allin, Limp Bizkit), you may be surprised to find Mr. Peace himself, John Lennon, on the list.

    Yep, John was human too.

What would you add to a playlist for someone you hate?
