  • When I think of classic rock drummers I think of massive drum sets - complete, almost laughable, overkill. And nothing completes an over-the-top drum kit better than a gigantic gong, set right behind the drummer. And for even more effect it can be doused with lighter fluid and lit on fire during that one song where the gong is actually employed. The gong is an eastern invention, but Western rock and roll stole it and made it their own. But we need to face facts, the gong doesn't fit in too well with most songs. That's why it's hard to find rock tracks that actually feature one. This playlist includes 10 classic rock songs with gong that I could scrounge up.

Please help expand the list and add any I have missed to the comments.

  • Independent music gets a lot more respect today than it has in past decades. Not too long ago it was extremely expensive and difficult for an artist to release an album. The recording, mixing, mastering, distribution and marketing were high hurdles to clear for unsigned acts.  Today, with some relatively inexpensive computer software and an Internet connection, even artists on a shoestring budget can record, mix, master, distribute and market their own music. Businesses like Topspin Media  even offer independent musicians a complete direct-to-fan platform that can completely eliminate the dependence on middle men who take the lion's share. Yes, independent music has certainly come a long way in a short amount of time. And it's not just DIY punk rock and alternative college bands doing the indie thing. Everyday, established artists are kicking record company dinosaurs to the curb as contracts expire. After all, it never really made sense that an artist should take a minor royalty for

  • It's hard to believe that the album Nevermind by Nirvana just had its 20th anniversary last month. Released on September 24th, 1991, Nevermind would go on to define a band, a genre and a generation. It has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, reached the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, and by my calculations, is the 15th greatest album of all time. The album's influence is broad and deep, and continues 20 years on. As with most albums that stand the test of time, you'll find no filler on this record -- it contains a dozen songs that are all stand out tracks in their own right. For this playlist I've reconstructed Nirvana's Nevermind with cover songs. Hear the album with a fresh perspective.

What covers would be in your remake of this timeless classic?

Classic Albums Remade: Nirvana - Nevermind

    1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Paul Anka

    2. In Bloom - Graham Parker

    3. Come As You Are - Glasvegas

    4. Breed - Otep

    5. Lithium - The Bad Plus

    6. Polly -Eyes Set to Kill

    7. Territorial

  • I have already published a list of "Wall Street Songs" to go along with the Occupy Wall Street protests, which are still continuing and spreading across the country. I thought I would build on the theme with this playlist made up of songs about bankers. Honestly, I feel sorry for bankers. Overnight, they went from having a career to be proud of, to being more hated than used car salesmen and personal injury attorneys. Bankers are your best friend when you need a loan, but your worst enemy when you can't pay it back. But right now it's the bankers who are worried as mass layoffs in the financial sector are adding tens of thousands more to the ranks of the unemployed. This playlist includes 11 songs about bankers.

    What would you add?

    Songs For Bankers

    1. Banker's Blues - Big Bill Broonzy

    2. No Banker Left Behind - Ry Cooder

    3. Banker's Son - Joe West

    4. Mr. Banker - Lynyrd Skynyrd

    5. Banker - Cinema

    6. Bankers Bonus - My Name Is Earl

    7. Young Banker - The Watersons

    8. Burn The

  • One of the great things about our new socially-connected world is that fans and artists can safely learn more about each other. Artists want to know about their fans from a safe distance, and fans want to know everything about their favorite artists.  Twitter lets artists reveal more about themselves if they wish, and also let's them in on what the world is saying about them. I thought mining Twitter data would be a great way to create playlists, and this is an example. If you follow @BoyGeorge on Twitter you'll learn some interesting tidbits about him. He's wickedly witty when it comes to deflecting haters, he's friends with Morrissey, he likes to use exclamation marks a lot, but tastefully so -- never more than one in a single sentence, he's a vegetarian and a fan of the raw food movement. Raw foodism is a diet that consists mostly of non-processed, uncooked and usually organic food. Much has been written about raw foodism, but at the most basic level, it's a way to ensure you're

  • The Occupy Wall Street protest is winding down its third week, with no signs of slowing.  But even as the published demands are absolutely daffy (i.e.: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment, One trillion dollars in ecological restoration, One trillion dollars in infrastructure, Outlaw all credit reporting agencies, etc.) they have succeeded in setting the national conversation. And in that, they can already claim a victory. People are talking about how we can make the country a better place, and that's always a good thing. Although I disagree with most of their tenets, I will defend their right to protest to the death. I believe wholeheartedly that the act of speaking up is an act of patriotism. I'm just not sure they have a grasp of how an economy of our scale works, and that the majority of Wall Street employees are not child-eating devil worshipers.

As Wall Street remains a site of protests, and a new symbol of our failing economy, I thought it was time for a

  • How can you say something about Steve Jobs that has not already been said? The man has been written about more than any business leader in the history of the world, bar none. He was one of those rare individuals who seemed to have been born into his destiny. At least we like to think of him that way, since his accomplishments appear superhuman. Jobs will probably be the greatest inventor, designer, marketer, and business man we will see in our lifetime, and he's gone at the young age of 56. The road was not easy for Steve Jobs, but if you use an Apple product, you understand that because of the road Steve took, our roads are easier. In the last part of his career, Jobs was able to transform every business he touched. The products he brought to market have been so far ahead, it's as if they came from the future. Sadly, it was clear that Steve's health was not doing well, and many suspected the end was near, but no one except his closest friends, family and doctors knew for sure -- just
