The Y! Music Playlist Blog
  • This is a continuation of our top 10 summer song playlists by decade. To compile each list, I looked at songs that reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the months of June, July and August for each year of the decade. From the collection of songs that reached #1 each summer, I selected the song that spent the most weeks on the chart in the top position. In the case of a tie (which was rare), I chose randomly from the songs that tied. The end result is a 10 song playlist of the top summer hits of the decade, one song from each year, listed in chronological order.

These are not the top songs ABOUT summer, but rather the most popular songs DURING summer. Songs that reach the top of the charts tend the be remembered. And the music that was part of your life as a a teenager will stay with you for the rest of your life. The most memorable moments of our teenage years tend to happen during the summer when we were free from school and responsibilities. We associate the songs from our teenage summers with coming of age memories. So if you grew up during the 70s this list may hold a powerful nostalgic pull.

Now please note, these are not my personal picks, but the top Billboard hits. So these are truly the songs that were getting the most attention during each summer of the 1970s. Your top summer songs of the 1970s may differ.

So tell us, what were your favorite summer songs of the 1970s?

MTV played a huge part in the top summer songs of the 1980s. The cable station debuted on August 1, 1981 and many of the top summer songs of this decade were featured heavily by the Music Television Network. "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes, "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor, "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, "When Doves Cry" by Prince, "Shout" by Tears For Fears", and the remaining top summer hits of the 80s were all on heavy rotation at MTV.

If you grew up during the 80s you can probably still see the videos in your head every time you hear one of these songs.

The top summer songs of the 1990s were driven by MTV and terrestrial radio, but it's notable because it was the first decade in music history that saw summertime #1 hits from hip-hop artists. Sir-Mix-A-Lot, Puff Daddy & Bone Thugs n Harmony all had top summertime hit songs in the 90s.

R&B and pop artists also scored high with Mariah Carey, All-4-One, TLC, The Essential, Bryan Adams, UB40 and Jennifer Lopez all contributing.

So if you're looking for a nostalgic soundtrack from the summers of the 1990s, you can start right here.

  • Hit songs will be remembered forever, but the most memorable will always be the hits of summer. Every summer there are certain songs that seem to be everywhere you turn. These are the songs that will always be associated with that particular year.

As we wait to see what the top summer songs of 2013 will be, let's look back at the decade of the 00s. For this playlist, I've looked at Billboard's number one hit songs from the years 200o through 2009. I then determined which songs spent the most weeks at number one in the months of June, July and August. The winner of each year is contained in this playlist.

The end result is a playlist that contains true top 10 summer hits of the 00s.

2009 is a year that really stood out. The whole summer (and then some) was dominated by a single act: The Black Eyed Peas. Their #1 hits "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta A Feeling" ruled the top of the charts from April 18, 2009 until October 17, 2009.

That's quite an accomplishment, in all of its Auto-tuned glory.

  • Are you ready for summer yet? Will you be working on a tan?

After all, a suntan is something that just goes with summer and the coconut smell of suntan oil will always remind me of summers spent on the beach. Musicians have penned a few songs about the suntan, whether to take a stab at a perceived vanity, or to comment on the perceived attractiveness of a  tan.

And for those of us who actually live in a part of the world that has seasons it's almost time to get out in the sun. I'm all for the great outdoors, but I do not get the whole sun worship thing. Too much sun is bad for you! Especially young people. I think if you asked any melanoma patient, they would gladly give up the bronzed skin of their youth in a heartbeat, if they only had a chance. So make sure you stay safe in the sun this summer! It's not a joke, the risks are real, so protect yourself!

This playlist features suntan-focused songs, and I think you'll find it a pretty interesting listen. Sometimes a random subject like this can help you find some great new music. This playlist did that for me.

  • Cthulhu is an ancient monster, crafted in the mythology of H.P. Lovecraft. The creature first appeared in Weird Tales magazine circa 1928, and since that time, the mythos has grown and has gained a strong cult identity, especially among geek culture.

Lovecraft describes Cthulhu as such, "A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind, along with a large jugular vein."

The 1981, the role playing game Call of Cthulhu helped to expose the Lovecraftian myth to many, and today you can find the monster's influence among writers, filmmakers, artists, game designers and musicians the world over.

The horror and fear that runs rampant through the world of Cthulhu is a perfect match for heavy metal music, and for this playlist I've found a fine collection of heavy metal songs inspired by the ancient one.

    Tread lightly, if you dare.

  • I still love older rock music, and when I turn on my local classic rock radio station I can name every song before the first measure is finished. This is partly because I love music, but also because classic rock radio pretty much sticks to the same playlist. We have a running joke around here that you can't drive anywhere with the classic rock station on without hearing a Bad Company song. It's just something you can count on, like a sunrise, or taxes.

My 7-year old has a real affinity for classic rock and he's started playing guitar because of it. That's a good thing, so I'll let him listen.

As a parent, it's becoming clear that I must teach my kids a lot about rock music, they must learn the bands, the sub-genres and the great albums that no household should be without. It's helping me rediscover music I haven't listened to in years, and I tip my hat to classic rock radio for helping with my kids rock education.

Tuesday's are the best, since most classic rock stations have a "Twofer Tuesday" program. This is where they play two songs by the same band back to back. This is a great way to let my kids discover older music and get a feel for what a band sounds like without investing the time required for a whole album.

On the way to soccer practice they can get a taste of Thin Lizzy and on the way back they can digest some Allman Brothers Band.

It's all good, and it's inspired me to create my own Twofer Tuesday classic rock playlist.

This list includes 250 classic rock radio staples by 125 different bands. Enjoy, and rock on!

  • We all have songs that remind us of summer. There's just something about music and summer that goes well together. Now I know it's a little early to be talking about summer, considering it still feels like winter in many parts of the country, but I promise, it'll be here before you know it!

While we all have our favorite summer songs, Billboard is the final authority on what the most popular summer songs actually are.

This playlist includes only summer-themed songs that scored the highest according to Billboard, using their Hot 1oo chart from its birth in August, 1958 up until last summer.

The songs were ranked based on how many weeks they spent on the chart, with weeks spent at #1 being worth more than weeks spent at #2, and on down the line to weeks spent at #100.

The end result is a 30 song playlist that captures the essence of our favorite season.

  • Who doesn't love summer, especially if you're young. Once school is out, you can hit the beach and enjoy life without a care in the world.

Rock music agrees with me. You can find more songs that sing the praises of summer more than the other three seasons combined. And when it comes to summer sports, none has had an impact on the music scene as much as surfing has. In fact, it's the only sport I can think of that has its own genre: surf music.

As the summer of 2013 approaches, I thought I would revisit some of my favorite popular rock songs about surfing. While many of the songs in this playlist are considered "surf music", many are not. But they all understand the pull of a carefree and subdued surf culture. It's a culture that will always be attached at the hip with music in one form or another.

Will you be surfing this summer?

If so, what will be on your playlist?

  • I like to dig into the bowels of heavy metal from time to time, and nothing makes for more playlisting fun than putting metal songs together around some destructive theme. I've done a bunch of heavy metal playlists on death, Satan, horror, fire, and more. But for this playlist I'm focusing on poison, specifically cyanide.

Cyanide can be found in small amounts in apple seeds and peach pits, and some types of cyanide are deadly if as little as 1.5 milligrams of poison per kilogram of body weight are ingested. Death by cyanide can be accompanied by the skin turning blue, seizures, vertigo and difficulty breathing. It's not fun stuff.

As with most deadly things, you can find a number of heavy metal songs that fit the bill.

For this playlist I have included 10 "cyanide songs" by 10 different metal bands.

    Cheers!
