  • When you want to express your love for someone, distance can provide a good measure. My kids are always trying to out do me on this. If I say, "I love you to the moon and back" they'll respond with something like, "I love you around the earth, to the moon and back a hundred-bazillion times". It's very sweet. Songwriters have also used distance to describe dedication, and I've come to the conclusion that the shortest distance a songwriter can use to express a great love is 500 miles. Anything over that is icing on the cake (or overkill). Anything less simply does not make the point strong enough. 200 miles? Nah. You can jump in the car and cover that in 3 hours. Some people commute 300 miles each day. 400 is getting close, but you could probably get there and back before the sun goes down. It's not until you get to 500 miles that the sentiment starts to really mean something. 500 miles is a haul no matter how you look at it. At 500 miles, you're talking a full 8 or 9 hours of driving,

  • There is no rock & roll guitar player more iconic than Jimi Hendrix. It doesn't matter who you put up as a challenger, most rock fans can deliver a winning argument on why Jimi is #1. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named him number one on their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, which is as official as it probably gets. Jimi burned brightly and left an immense legacy -- it boggles the mind to think that he was only 27-years old when he died. His influence on guitar players would be impossible to measure, but you can hear his spirit running through the fingers of guitarists the world over. For this playlist I've selected a dozen songs that mention Jimi Hendrix directly in the song title, or in the lyrics.

  • When I find myself falling behind on new music, which seems to happen more often lately as life continues to push forward, I have a few standbys that never fail to get me reconnected. One of these is the Dusted magazine college chart. The chart is compiled by looking at the playlists of an exclusive group of college radio stations. Each station is given equal weight and those albums with the most spins win. There's no interference from the corporate rock world as college radio is still  mostly DJ-driven. This playlist includes a single song from the current top 10 albums as currently ranked by Dusted magazine. This is a must hear list.

Below is the list of radio stations that Dusted includes when compiling this chart.

Asheville FM, CFRU, CFUV, CHIRP, CHUO, CITR, CIUT, CJSF, CJSW, CKUT, CKXU, KALX, KBGA, KBOO, KCPR, KDVS, KJHK, KPSU, KSPC, KTRU, KUCI, KUOI, KUOM, KUSF, KVCU, KVRX, KXLU, KZSU, WCBN, WDCE, WFMU, WIDR, WLUW, WMBR, WNCW, WNYU, WRAS, WRFL, WRRG, WRUV, WTJU, WUNH, WUSB,

  • I have done a lot of playlists over the years in celebration of Saint Patrick's Day -- Irish Drinking Songs, Bands From Ireland, Traditional Irish Classics, et cetera, and so on. This year I was pondering what I could do to celebrate the Irish this year -- something that I haven't already done. After running some Irish musicians through my head I decided to do a list of Irish solo artists. Mainly because there is a good selection of some truly great ones. To make this list the artist had to be born in Ireland, not just of Irish decent, they had to be known for music outside of traditional Irish stuff, and they had to be better known as a solo artist, as opposed to a member of a band. So by this criteria Bono does not make the list since U2 are more well known, while Bob Geldof makes the list because he's more well known than his band The Boomtown Rats.

This includes 10 of my favorites, who would you add?
