The Y! Music Playlist Blog
  • Yesterday I posted a playlist of songs inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. As I was doing a little research I came across the website Shareranks.com. This site is an aggregator of "Greatest Lists". The site claims to prevent "ballot stuffing" in order to get a good sense of how its users rank any number of things.

Shareranks.com listed Edgar Allan Poe as the fourth greatest American author of all time.

So who are the top 10?

Here's who they currently have listed:

    1. Mark Twain
    2. William Faulkner
    3. Ernest Hemingway
    4. Edgar Allan Poe
    5. John Steinbeck
    6. Tennessee Williams
    7. Cormac McCarthy
    8 . Flannery O'Connor
    9. Harlan Ellison
    10. David Foster Wallace

This playlist includes a song for each of these, with the exception of Harlan Ellison, for whom I could not find song on Spotify. I included a song by my personal favorite American author instead, Herman Melville, who came in at #12. I felt that this travesty needed to be corrected.

Who would be on your Top 10 American Authors list?

  • Edgar Allan Poe is arguably one of the most widely known American writers in history. In fact, Shareranks.com places Edgar Allan Poe as the #4 Greatest American Writer of all time, with only Mark Twain, William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway beating him out for the top three spots.

Poe did a lot of different things with his writing during his short 40 year life, but he is most remembered for his stories of mystery and the macabre. He left an impression on generations of readers who have explored the dark side of mankind through his works.

Edgar Allan Poe's life was almost as troubled as some of his writings. Death and failure surrounded him, and he fought alcohol and drug abuse for most of his adult life. Could it be that the best art comes from the most troubled souls? Edgar Allan Poe certainly supports the notion.

Poe's work has had a huge influence on popular culture. Books and films inspired by his work are easy to come by, but he's also inspired generations of musicians who have been attracted to his melancholy writings.

This playlist includes songs inspired by the work and life of Edgar Allan Poe.

  • I've always been a fan of bacon, but lately it seems like bacon has reached new heights of fame. On a flight home early this week I picked up a Skymall magazine and saw bacon print pillows and throws for sale. Later that evening, after arriving home and stretching out to relax with some TV, I saw an ad for a new cable show called the "United States Of Bacon". While I would not argue that bacon is indeed delicious, a full television series dedicated to it?

    Really?

Last year, the UK’s National Pig Association sounded the alarm by claiming the world was headed for a massive bacon shortage. Maybe this is why bacon is seeing such a resurgence? I'm not sure, but with all the bacon talk lately I was inspired to create a playlist dedicated to our favorite greasy delight.

This playlist includes songs about bacon, inspired by bacon or that feature the word "bacon" in the song title.

So the next time you're frying up a big pan of bacon, put this playlist on and pay homage to the pork!

  • While our parents reminisce about teenage love affairs when they hear Elvis Presley or The Beatles on the radio, a new crop of fat and balding 40-somethings are now feeling the same nostalgic tingling when they hear songs by Black Flag, The Ramones, Bad Brains, Flipper, The Dead Kennedys and The Buzzcocks.

Sure, real punk rock is anti-authority, anti-corporate and anti-government, but no one would ever say it was anti-love.

Who can forget classic tracks like "Slip It In", "Oh Oh I Love Her So", "Die, Die My Darling" and "Orgasm Addict"?

This 18 track playlist is the perfect soundtrack to remind you of that high school crush who had the guts to jam a safety pin through their cheek.

When building the list I limited my choices to bands that were part of the first wave of punk rock, which started in the late 1970s and continued through the 1980s. Second and third wave punk was not included.

Sorry, but you won't find Rancid, The Offspring, Green Day or Anti-Flag here.

Back in the day punks were not known for their romantic side, and when it did reveal itself, it was usually a dysfunctional train wreck. Read: Sid & Nancy.

Punks in the 80s would never show romantic feelings for fear of having their heads bashed in, but all teenagers share a common phenomenon called puberty, which is the only thing more powerful on the teenage psyche than music.

Punk bands in the 80s that dared sing any song that referenced "love" had to be beyond reproach.

And so I present the ultimate Punk Rock Love Song Playlist:

  • Here's a great Valentine's Day playlist for us old folk.

As classic rockers are swelling the membership roles of the AARP I thought I would create a playlist to help take them back in time. Aging rockers still need some lovin' and classic rock love songs are just as appealing today as when teenagers first lost their virginity in the back seats of cramped Camaros before the Internet, or even MTV.

This playlist includes classic love songs by Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Elton John, The Doors, Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac, Eddie Money, Journey, Styx, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, Heart, Boston, Asia, Foghat and many more.

  • February has arrived and it brings depression, loneliness and heartbreak with it. Valentine's Day is a cute and playful time for the lucky ones. (myself included -- I found my lovely wife 13 years ago), but I can still remember the pains of a broken heart. And although the memories of lost love seem so trivial today, at the time heartbreak seriously sucked. But it's true; everyone should have their heart broken at least once in their lifetime.

It builds character and forces you look closer at your potential mate the next time around.

So as we celebrate Valentine's Day this month, let's remember the sniveling masses that have been screwed over, dumped or otherwise had their hearts ripped out. I know that aying, "you'll get over it" doesn't help much, but trust me, it's true.

I've created this playlist especially for the broken-hearted. These are some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful tracks ever recorded, and they will help you take your self pity to places not previously known to mankind (or womankind).

Sometimes it's best to embrace the pain, wallow in your own emotional destruction and consume as much chocolate and alcohol as your body can take.

  • The other day a press release showed up in my inbox that I thought was huge news. Black Flag was reuniting! I opened the email and read it eagerly.

Well, it wasn't as good as it sounded. Although the reunion includes original members of the band it does not include Henry Rollins. No offense against the band's second vocalist, Ron Reyes, but most of us aren't interested in Black Flag without Henry Rollins. It's like the Beatles without John Lennon or The Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger.

So while the press release was nothing to get excited about it did inspire me to do this Black Flag Valentine's Day playlist. To qualify for the list there were only two prerequisites.

    1. It had to be a Black Flag song.

    2. The song title needed to work on a candy conversation  heart.

How I wish someone would make these and package them in a box with the Black Flag logo on the front. I'd buy a 1000 of them and keep them all for myself.

    Happy Valentine's Day punks!

  • Well my friends, Valentine's Day is right around the corner. So you can expect a lot of love-related music around here during the month of February.

There is probably no holiday that holds more great playlist opportunities than Valentine's Day. Love is, by a wide margin, the biggest inspiration for song. A songwriter in love can tap its power and ride right to the top of the charts. And so can a songwriter with a broken heart.

Out of great joy or great pain springs the best music. Music, after all, has always been a way to connect emotionally with an audience.

For this playlist I've decided to explore the cliché device of "two hearts". You don't have to dig to deep in order to find a plethora of songs that use it to describe being in love.

This one is just a start and it includes both popular songs and high quality songs.

  • There are many sexual oddities to be found in the world, some are considered tame, some of them we would rather not think about, and some of them are just plain weird. And no matter what fetish or sexual deviancy you care to investigate, there are songs to tell the story.

Paraphilia is a proclivity to sexual arousal by things outside of the norm, like inanimate objects or situations. One such paraphilia is mechanophilia, which is having a specific sexual attraction to machines. Things like cars or motorcycles.

I was not too surprised to find a large number of songs that paint machines as sexual objects. After all, rock n' roll can be strange like that.

For this playlist I've found songs that seem to love a machine a bit too much, if you know what I mean.

So if you find yourself alone with nothing but your vacuum cleaner this Valentine's day, why not give this playlist a spin?

  • When you ask someone who doesn't play board games if they would like to play a board game, 90% of the time their response will be, "What, Monopoly?"

If this happens to you, I would recommend that you immediately beat that person forcefully about the face, then explain to them that there are much better board games available today. European style games have created a new renaissance in board game design, even as we live in a digital world.

But there is no denying the incredible influence that Monopoly has had on multiple generations.

Monopoly can be traced back to 1903 when Lizzie Phillips invented a game called "The Landlord's Game". It was published in 1923, but in 1934 Parker Brothers released Monopoly, and it has since sold over 250 million copies.

    That's a lot of games.

This playlist page homage to the board game Monopoly. And if you plan on playing a the game, you'll need a long playlist considering it can go on for hours.

What you you add to your Monopoly playlist?
