  • I was able to visit Manhattan this summer, unfortunately it was during the hottest weekend of the year, so it was a bit punishing. But even in the heat, Manhattan is mesmerizing, especially for fans of music. Every block seems to hold some incredible historical significance and it really does feel like the center of the world (sorry L.A., London, Paris). Case in point -- New York City has inspired more songs than any other city on the planet - by a wide margin. To cut this playlist down to size I've only chosen songs that mention the borough of Manhattan and fall within the genres of alternative or indie rock music.

Let me know what I've missed.

    Alt/Indie Manhattan Songs

    1. Marching Bands Of Manhattan - Death Cab For Cutie

    2. Manhattan - Kings Of Leon

  • In 1971, a young songwriter named Jackson Browne began writing a simple, but catchy song called "Take It Easy" for his debut album. A friend and neighbor named Glenn Frey heard the unfinished song and loved it, so Jackson did what any good friend would do, he gave Glenn the song for his band's debut album. Glenn Frey added the second verse, recorded it with the Eagles and the rest is history. Well, luckily for Jackson Brown, he had a lot more where that came from. Over the years he's produced a fine discography, chock-full of timeless tracks with huge crossover appeal. People who love rock, country, folk and pop music all love Jackson Browne, and songwriters hold him in high esteem for his ability to craft airtight gems.

For this playlist I've selected 10 classic Jackson Browne songs as performed by other artists. I could not find cover versions for some fan favorites like "Running On Empty", "The Load Out", "Tender Is The Night" and "Lawyers In Love", so if you know of any decent

  • Today was Apple's big September music event and the company rolled out its newest music-related technology and products. For the first time, people were able to watch the event stream live on their Apple devices via HTML5. This was important as it was a test of Apple's brand spankin' new, gargantuan server farm in North Carolina, not too far from where I live. The video looked great, but there were some hiccups along the way.  Once Steve Jobs was on stage he began walking the audience through an iOS upgrade (4.1) that includes new photo technology -- it looked fantastic. If Apple devices can really take photos that look as good as what they showed in the demo it will be a very welcomed addition, but I'll need to see it for myself to be a true believer. He also mentioned that version 4.2 will be coming in November and will bring much of the new iPod/iPhone functionality to the iPad (multitasking, folders, etc.).

After showing off new features of iOS he jumped into the iPod product line

  • A CNN article about the famous Georgia Theatre in Athens caught my eye today. As you probably know, Athens, Georgia made a name for itself in the music world as a hotbed for modern rock in the 1980s. Artists like R.E.M., The B-52's and The Indigo Girls all emerged from Athens and landed on the international music stage. The Georgia Theatre is an iconic music venue that hosted these bands and many more who helped change the face of popular music. R.E.M. shot the video for "Shiny Happy People" and John Mayer shot the video for "No Such Thing" in the historic theatre. Last year on the 19th of June, a tragic fire destroyed everything except the walls and foundation of the Georgia Theatre. The CNN article highlights the fact that insurance only covered what was owed on the property, but in the true fashion of a tight knit community, money has been raised and reconstruction is under way. The total cost will be about $4 Million.

This playlist features 40 artists who've performed at the

  • There may be no better sight for a Sunday drive than the view of Tuscan sunflower fields on a road to San Gimignano. On the other hand, I have a way to go before I see the whole world, but the visual impact of what I saw in Tuscany will be hard to beat -- layers of big, bright yellow sunflowers, blue sky, white clouds and a picture perfect medieval walled city on a hill -- breathtaking. I've seen sunflowers in gardens and have even grown my own, but I had never seen so many of them grown as a crop before. It seems that sunflowers are good for far more than their striking beauty in a rolling landscape. Sunflower seeds are a perfect snack alone, or make a great addition to breads and salads. They're also ground into sunbutter and the oil extracted from them contains a monounsaturated fat that's even healthier than olive oil. Originally native to Mexico, the sunflower has become the symbol of the state of Kansas, the nation of the Ukraine and the Vegan society. They can also remove toxins

  • I'm lucky enough to live on a large wooded lot filled with a wide variety of trees. We love being surrounded by them and exploring the woods. The largest tree on my lot is a huge hickory tree that must be about 70 feet tall, and the nuts that fall from this tree attract deer and squirrel, and the leaves provide an excellent canopy in the summer and color in the fall. Today I decided to smoke some pork in my grill, which I have never done before. So I bought some hickory chips, soaked them in water, put them in tin foil, then threw them on the coals to create the hickory smoke needed for some awesome barbecue. Hopefully it will make a great dinner later today. Anyway, the tree in my yard and today's dinner inspired me to do a playlist in honor of the hickory. And I must say it's a pretty decent listen. Also, be sure to check out our ode to the oak tree.

    Ode To The Hickory Tree

    1. Hickory Wind - Gram Parsons

    2. Old Hickory - The Kentucky Colonels

  • Phish is a jam band that's developed a rabid cult following second only to the mighty Grateful Dead. And like the Dead, they have a reputation for intense improvisation within the structures of their own music as well as the music of other artists. But Phish are also well known for exploring and remaking music from a wider selection of genres. For this playlist however, I wanted to focus on Phish's remakes of songs by classic rock bands. This playlist contains 20 tracks and only scratches the surface, so I've given it the designation "Volume 1". I have also chosen not to repeat artists covered with the intention of getting a better cross section of classic rock as seen through the eyes of Phish. Please let me know which classic rock covers you would put in "Volume 2".

Phish: Classic Rock Covers, Vol. 1

    1. Johnny B. Goode (Chuck Berry)

    2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles)

    3. Loving Cup (The Rolling Stones)

    4. 5:15 (The Who)

  • The name "Robert" is of Old German origin and means "bright fame", so it's no surprise that many famous Roberts exist in the world of music. Being a Robert myself, I count myself lucky to have a wide range of acceptable nicknames to choose from. "Bobby", "Robby", "Rob", "Dob", "Bob" all come to mind. My close relatives, teachers and coaches were the only ones allowed to ever call me "Bobby", when I got a real job I started going by Robert, and before that I was Bob to my friends. Some have even made up special nicknames for me like "Rabbit", "Bobbahay" and "Bobert".  Ah, the joys of being a Robert.

For this playlist I wanted to focus on the ubiquitous "Bob" form of the name.  And I decided to chose only musicians who have performed in some capacity as a solo artist and have good name recognition. So while a band like "The Bobs" or Supertramp drummer Bob C. Benberg could make a list of musical Bobs, I did not include them here for these reasons. In addition, I've only selected artists

  • It's good to have a fictional representation of evil to root against, and for this reason cartoon villains fill an important need. They always end up losing and they provide an example to children of how not to behave. We all have our preferred villains, but our favorites are usually the ones we have the strongest childhood memories of. There's a real art to creating the perfect villain for an animated series or film and for this playlist I've selected a song for each of the top 10 cartoon villains in my eyes. Your picks will surely be different from mine, so please let us know what villain you would add to the comments and what song you would use to represent?
