  • The saying "sex, drugs and rock & roll" was created because it has basis in fact. Rock stars are well known for their excesses with women and mind altering substances. Drugs have ended the lives of many talented musicians and have ended the careers of many more.

An anti-drug rock song sounds like an oxymoron. But in fact, those who've seen the destructive power of drugs up close can produce a much more powerful anti-drug message than any tax-rich, government PSA writer.

Many of the anti-drug songs in this list were inspired by first hand experience. Each one is delivered not only with musical credibility, but with subject matter credibility as well. Not all of these bands practiced what they preached consistently during their careers, so my suggestion is do as they say, not as they do.

These are, in my opinion, the top 10 anti-drug classic rock songs ever recorded. If you disagree, please add to the comments which songs you would drop, and what you would replace them. But remember they

  • Brothers have a special connection, and when they are raised in a musical family the results can be stunning. While developing skill on an instrument takes years of dedicated solo practice, the ability to produce great band-centered music can only be developed by playing with other human beings.

Siblings have a leg up in this regard, but both brothers and musicians are notorious for fighting, so successful bands that include brothers are not as numerous as one would think. However, for those brothers who have made it in music, the sky's the limit. A smattering of brother-groups have produced numerous timeless classics and this list explores the very best of them.

If you're looking for the Jonas Brothers please check Disney.com -- this list is devoid of manufactured fads.

To make this list each group had to have at least two real life brothers (sorry Doobies), have to be considered rock & roll (sorry Jackson 5), and should have reached the highest levels of respect among rock fans and

  • Roy Thomas Baker is a legendary rock producer for many reasons.

He got his start with Decca Records at the tender age of 14, came up through the ranks of engineer to become a producer, and is responsible for helping transform hard rock into complex arena rock. The shining example of his work being his production of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Other major acts Roy Thomas Baker has produced include The Cars, Cheap Trick, Devo, Journey, Foreigner, Yes, The Smashing Pumpkins, and many others. As a senior VP of A&R for Elektra Records he signed many of the artists that would go on to create New Wave in the 1980s. However, this list focuses exclusively on songs that he has a production credit on.

  • These 5 albums are currently the critical "bottom of the barrel". These have the lowest scores on the review aggregation site Metacritic.com. If one critic says your music's no good, don't be discouraged, but if they all do, you have a problem.

Take my advice and don't try to defend these in public.

  • If you missed it, there were two big fashion news items from the Presidential inauguration. One was Michelle Obama's much-raved-about outfits, created by lesser-known fashion designers who have just had their careers launched by the first lady. The second was Aretha Franklin's massive cold weather bow-hat.

Although I have mixed feelings on the hat there is no denying that Ms. Franklin still has a set of pipes that can stop anyone dead in their tracks. Her moving rendition of "My Country Tis Of Thee" got me thinking about another cover song that she's performed perfectly. Namely, her version of Otis Redding's "Respect".

After a quick search I found a list of the world's top remade greatest hits over at the song list site Pop Culture Madness and guess what was #1?

This playlist includes the first 10 songs of the Pop Culture Madness list.

Which do you agree with and which do you think should have been in the top 10?

  • If you would like to listen to a playlist of great songs inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. please be sure to check out the playlist I put together last year.

This year, instead of creating another list of songs by musicians paying homage to MLK, I thought it would be a better tribute to provide a list of his words as spoken by himself.

Martin Luther King day is an excellent time to revisit the recordings of Dr. King. Most of us understand the history and importance of the man, and how without him, we would be living in a much different country. But when you take the time to just sit down and listen to his speeches he comes back to life. There is no doubt that Martin Luther King is one of the most inspiring and competent speakers in history, and his words never fail to produce chills and revelation.

As you listen to him speak, one thing that will strike you is how pertinent his words are, not just to the civil rights movement of the past, but how his timeless wisdom can be applied
