Black Sabbath's brooding thunder paved the way for throngs of musicians who came after them. And many music historians consider Sabbath the first ever "heavy metal" band.

However, most casual fans aren't aware that you could incorporate a small city with the number of musicians who have been members of the legendary and pioneering group known as Black Sabbath. We all know Ozzy and Dio, but do you remember Bobby Rondinelli or David Danoto?

This playlist features bands that have had a member who was part of Black Sabbath at some point in time. Some of the connections are surprising, like Terry Chimes' stint with The Clash. However, most stay within the metal genre. This is a must hear playlist for fans of Black Sabbath.

Includes music by Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Elton John, Foreigner. Eddie Money, Journey, Styx, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, Heart, Bad Company and more.

An artist can add interest to a song when they incorporate non-musical sounds into a recording. The sound of rain, conversation, cars, nature and telephones are some of the first that come to mind when I think about everyday sounds I've heard used often in popular music.

Starting a track with a telephone ringing can set up the song as if it were an actual telephone conversation (and it some cases it is). This is a well worn tactic, but one I found interesting to explore.

This playlist includes songs that start with the sound of a telephone. Whether it's a phone ringing, a dial tone, a busy signal or buttons being pressed. I know there are a ton of these tracks out there, so chime in on any I've missed. But remember, it has to be a telephone sound and it has to kick off the track.

Songs That Start With Telephone Sounds

       1. No Phone - Cake

       2. Hanging On The Telephone - Blondie

       3. As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone -  Loretta Lynn

The Cure is the band that holds the most nostalgic good feeling for me. They were my favorite band all through college and it was a Cure song that played as my wife and I had the first dance at our wedding. I've been lucky enough to see them live a few times and have been wanting to put together a Rhapsody playlist of live Cure tracks for some time, so here it is. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Robert Smith is a master of melody, song construction and dynamic layering, which all convey well on Cure albums. But when they perform live the band can reach that dreamlike connection with the audience that can border on a spiritual awakening.

This playlist examines some of the best live Cure tracks available on Rhapsody. If The Cure come anywhere close to your town, I suggest you catch the show. If not, this playlist may be the next best thing.

Joe Boyd was born in Boston, Massachusetts, raised in New Jersey and educated at Harvard. After moving to Europe Boyd started working as a production and tour manager for George Wien where he had the opportunity to work with artists like Muddy Waters, Stan Getz and Bob Dylan (for which he supervised his infamous electric debut). In 1966 he opened the famous UFO club in London.

Boyd earned his first record production credit in 1966 when he produced four tracks for Eric Clapton and the Powerhouse. His career expanded to the point where he became a force on the British folk and psychedelic scene producing classics by Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, John Martyn, Richard & Linda Thompson and many more. Later in his career he molded songs by artists like R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg and others.

Boyd also became involved in film as the director of Music for Warner Brothers Films where he worked to produce the scores of such classic films as Deliverance and Clockwork Orange. He also created the film documentary Jimi Hendrix (1973) and founded his own label called Hannibal (now a part of Rykodisc). Today he resides in London without a label and claims to be "uninterested in going to gigs involving WPSEs (White People Singing in English)".

Boyd has written a book about making music in the 1960s called White Bicycles - Making Music in the 1960s, published in May 2006 by Serpent's Tail Press in the UK.

This playlist provides a good overview of Joe Boyd's diverse body of production work.

Since the Beatles are without much doubt the most influential band in the history of popular music it makes perfect sense that they're also the most covered band in history. You can find a cover version of every song the Beatles have recorded without much trouble. And it's easy to find hundreds, if not thousands, of versions of their more popular hits.

Besides the sheer numbers of Beatles remakes floating around the most impressive thing is the wide diversity of artists who have covered the fab four. The influence of the Beatles spans across just about any music genre you can think of.

You can even find full albums of Beatles covers done in the styles of bluegrass, rock, electronica, bossa novaGregorian chants, Cubanclassical, soulchildren'sblues and this doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. For this playlist I wanted to pick Beatles remakes done in the style of instrumental jazz.

The Billboard Hot 100 chart began identifying the top songs in America back in 1958. The list takes airplay and sales into account and is a good measure of what the most popular songs are at a point in time. Songs that make to the very top of this list on any given week can claim the moniker "number one hit".

This playlist is a collection of the best of the best. The greatest hits to ever peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Now before you start whining about why a particular song did not make the grade please ask yourself if the song ever made it to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. If not, it will not be on this playlist.

It's easy to find a list of Billboard's number one hits, but how does one narrow it down from there? Do you select the biggest sellers, the most critically acclaimed, personal favorites? Well, ultimately I decided on some parameters to help me tailor the list into a chronological time capsule that represents the best of what planet earth

  • Pass It Around by Donavon Frankenreiter

     (Listen - Rhapsody)

Donavon Frankenreiter's latest effort titled Pass It Around has an undercurrent and lyrical content that is firmly rooted in timeless hippy concepts. Share the love sentiment is a hard thing to distribute through music without coming off as cheesy or forced, but Frankenreiter connects on the make-the-world-a-better-place vibe. Downtempo grooves backed with swirling B3, understated drums and lite guitar mesh perfectly with Donavon's soulful and confident vocals. Although the cynical and snide among the music elite will certainly hail the record as too common, I would be a liar to deny it's appeal to both the ears and the heart.

    Sunshine Lies by Matthew Sweet

     (Listen - Rhapsody)

A lot of Matthew Sweet fans long for another album as great as 1991's sublime Girlfriend. And although Sunshine Lies is not the return to form we've been craving it does have some of the Beatlesque leaning, loose guitar playing and distinctive
