  • Here's a fine listenin' playlist to go with your fine sippin' whiskey. For the sake of consistency, it contains only country or bluegrass tracks about the much adored "water of life". Whiskey and country music do indeed make a fine combination.

Many countries are known for their quality whiskeys including Scotland, Ireland, Japan and Canada, but when listening to this Americana-centric whiskey playlist I highly recommend enjoying a fine American whiskey like Jack Daniels or Jim Beam.

The playlist includes whiskey-focused songs by Willie Nelson, George Jones, Uncle Tupelo, Blue Mountain, David Allan Coe, Yonder Mountain String Band, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Travis Tritt, Gillian Welch and more.

  •  Chuck Panozzo is a 58-year-old gay man who came out of the closet just 6 years ago.

Why would someone keep their sexuality a secret for such a long time? Well, as a founding member of the classic rock band Styx, (the first rock band in history to sell 4 consecutive triple-platinum albums), Chuck Panozzo is also a rock star born from an era not exactly accepting of homosexuality. Especially considering the fan base Styx found itself making its living from.

Chuck had a fascinating new book published last year that tells his tale. It's a story about reaching the pinnacle of fame and fortune, but counterbalanced by having to live a lie. Sadly, he was probably correct when assuming fan and media rejection, which certainly would have presented itself 20 or 30 years ago.

After losing a close friend to AIDS, Chuck Panozzo decided that he "didn't want to be a coward" anymore, and he came out. Being HIV positive, he is now dedicating a large part of his life to fighting the disease.

    The book

  • For those of you that missed the first installment of our "Radish Portable Gold" playlist series, the idea is pretty simple. I pick 20 tracks that are without any sliver of doubt (critically or personally), classic songs. Genre plays no part in the selection process, but great care is taken to the playlist as a whole to ensure good flow and quality. Sometime a curveball is thrown in to keep things interesting. You can think of it as the ultimate eclectic ad-free radio station.

Of course you can stream via the web for free or buy the tracks to burn to a CD, but for Rhapsody To Go subscribers, I would recommend downloading the playlist to your portable device and taking it with you on your commute, or for a jog. I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I do.

Unless you've been completely oblivious to the modern world over the last couple of weeks you're well aware that Michael Phelps is at the very pinnacle of Olympic sport. His name will be etched in the minds of billions for generations to come as are names like Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and Nadia Comaneci.

His record-breaking gold medal streak at the 2008 Summer Olympics has been breathtaking to watch and his face is getting more airtime than either of the US presidential candidates. In many of the candid Phelps shots gracing our television sets, he is seen with the ubiquitous iPod earbuds stuck in his Obama-like ears. For music fans across the world the image of Phelps with his headphones on begs a seriously burning question.

    What's on Michael Phelps' iPod?

I have my official request into Michael's PR person, but as I stand in line behind thousands of more important press I did some digging.

This playlist contains 5 tracks that Michael picked exclusively for Rhapsody

"Slowcore" or "Sadcore" is best characterized by the melancholy themes of its lyrics, slow tempos and minor-key melodies. Born of the do-it-yourself indie movement, individual tracks range from minimal acoustic outings to complex self-recorded and studio numbers with pronounced elements of dissonance in later compositions.

Sweeping vistas measured with simplicity and low-key instrumentation can put the listener at ease and aid in relaxation. This mellow musical baseline lends itself to powerful dynamic changes without becoming loud or grating. Early exponents like the Red House Painters and American Music Club drew on the nihilism, loneliness and isolation found in the lyrics of bands like The Cure and The Smiths.

This playlist with a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning is as good as life gets.

    The Ultimate Slowcore Playlist

    1. "Song For A Blue Guitar" by Red House Painters from the album Songs For A Blue Guitar
    2. "Bluebird Of Happiness" by Mojave 3 from the album

The Incorrect Music Show with Irwin Chusid on WFMU in New York went off the air in May, 2002. It was a terrific program that featured "outsider" music. Amateur stuff so bad that it was hilarious. The two requirements for the music that was played on the show were: "1. the songs could not be intentionally made bad, and 2. the artists had to be self-unaware."

This playlist contains 27 tracks you would have heard on the show. If you were a big fan of Incorrect Music I hope this playlist will bring back some fine memories.

If you have never heard of Incorrect Music, you really shouldn't miss this playlist as it may just open your eyes to the beautiful honesty of outsider music.

WARNING: Repeated listening will cause hallucination

There is no denying that Bob Dylan is a legend. In fact, he may be the most influential songwriter in American history. Studio musicians would burn themselves with lit cigarettes just to get chance to play with him. But Bob has acted the part of sideman himself.

Dylan has recorded with many other artists over his illustrious career. He's provided vocals, harmonica, bass, guitar and keyboard work for musicians you know by name and some you probably don't. Some of his side project work is debated because it's believed that Bob has worked under pseudonyms including Tedham Porterhouse, Bob Landy and Roosevelt Gook. This playlist includes recordings that Dylan is said to have been involved with.

    Bob Dylan Side Projects

    1. Swing And Turn Jubilee - Carolyn Hester
    2. Will The Circle Be Unbroken - Ramblin' Jack Elliott
    3. Who Do You Love - Tom Rush
    4. San Antone, (Is Anybody Going To) - Doug Sahm
    5. Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On - Leonard Cohen
