  • One could say that Edgar Allan Poe was the original "Goth". His macabre poetry and short stories are timeless literary classics and his life was not much more upbeat than his writing. Both his parents died when he was a child, he suffered from depression and drug addiction, his wife/cousin died after two years of marriage and he himself died at the young age of 40.

Poe continues to be a muse for all things horror. Many artists, writers, filmmakers and musicians that lean to the dark side of the human condition count Poe as a major influence.

Legendary composers like Debussy and Rachmaninoff sited Edgar Allan Poe as an influence, but for this playlist I wanted for focus on modern music that has been inspired by the work of Poe.

You'll find rock, alternative, hip hop, folk and metal in the list, but no matter how diverse the genres most of the songs work to capture the eerie undercurrent that transformed Edgar Allan Poe into legend.

  • I have fond childhood memories of the circus. I remember being truly amazed by the clowns, lions, elephants, acrobats and other circus spectacles that were larger than life at the time. It was under the big top where I experienced live entertainment for the very first time.

In addition to the animals, comedy, costumes, food and smells, music also played a big part in the experience.

This playlist does not feature the actual music you would hear at the circus -- for that check out the compilation albums produced by Sounds of the Circus South Shore, or the single-disc compilation Under the Big Top: 100 Years of Circus Music  -- these records have all the traditional circus music you'll ever need, and would be the perfect background music for your circus-themed party or event.

For my playlist I wanted to select a good number of songs that reference the circus and its themes, but as performed by well-known popular music artists. In other words, this is a circus themed song list that

  • The "Songs of the Century" list was put together as an music education tool by the Recording Industry of America Association (RIAA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Scholastic Inc. and AOL@School.

The stated goal behind the extensive list of songs is to "promote a better understanding of America's musical and cultural heritage" in American schools.

The way the songs were picked is a little bit fuzzy, but each was voted in by people in the music industry, the media, teachers, elected officials and students. Each person with a vote was asked to consider "historical significance" when making their selections.

The complete list includes the top 365 songs of the twentieth century as selected by this process.

Unfortunately, the methods used to select the voters has not been revealed and anything with the mark of the RIAA tends to be met with disdain by many. Sure, there are plenty of songs I would have picked over some of these, and the Beatles not appearing in the top 25 seems

  • Are you an political independent having a hard time deciding which party to vote for this November? Don't hurt yourself combing through all the issues and listening to the talking heads.

Instead, just decide which color has the better songs and you'll know who to vote for.

Blue is a color that holds a multitude of meaning for the songwriter. It's representation of sadness and despair have even given the color it's own genre in "the blues". It's also the color used to represent the democratic party, so if you like this playlist better than the red one, vote for Obama or Clinton in November depending on who gets the nod.

  • Back in 2006 I had the pleasure of seeing a pair of South Berwick, Maine's finest singer-songwriters. Rod Picott and Slaid Cleaves.
It was an especially fantastic evening because of the venue; an intimate Charlotte, NC listening room. The kind of place where everyone attending is there for only one reason, the music. If you're not familiar with this master americana songcrafter, you should immediately stream the two albums he has available.

Rod also recently co-produced what I feel was the finest americana album of 2006. Slaid Cleaves' Unsung. The record features 13 songs by little-known, but brilliant songwriters, hence the title. The Rounder Records release reached number 5 on the americana chart and I suggest you give it a spin.

Between sets at his show, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rod in the role of obsessive fan. We spoke about music, and I asked if he would send me his top 15 tracks for a celebrity playlist piece. Less than a week later, I received an email with his

  • 2008 will be the 6th year for the Bonnaroo music festival which takes place in Manchester, Tennessee -- about 60 miles southeast of Nashville. The four day festival is held over four days in June, and although it was originally a jam band orientated event, it has grown into one of the most diverse annual music festivals in the nation. In 2008 Bonnaroo will welcome a myriad of critically acclaimed artists from a wide variety of genres including indie rock, metal, country, hip-hop, americana, reggae, jazz, folk, gospel, r&b, jam, electronica, blues, world, rock and comedy.

The name "Bonnaroo" comes from a cajun slang term that is synonymous with having a really great time. And this is exactly what 100,000 people intend to do on June 12th through June 15th on the 700 acre farm where Bonnaroo is held.

If you're lucky enough to be going this year, be safe and have a blast -- you can't really go wrong with this year's stellar line up.

  • I'm headed on vacation next month to beautiful Hilton Head island on the coast of South Carolina, but I'll continue to do playlists, because music is never work.

As I was daydreaming about going on my vacation today I remembered this playlist. I put it together at a coffee house the last time I was in Hilton Head back in December of 2006. Since the place where we stay doesn't have an Internet connection I can sometimes be found in local cafes that offer free WiFi.

This list was inspired as I sat in a Sea Pines coffee shop that happened to be playing all 80s songs in the background.

I was a teenager in the 80s, so I'm a sucker for anything from said decade. I've spent a lot of time collecting quality cover versions of popular 80s songs, so if you love the 80s as much as I do, you'll get a kick out of many of the remakes in this playlist.

I'm sure this list can be improved and built upon, so I've labeled it "Volume 1". I'll do new volumes in the future, and when I get to #5 or #6,
