Moonshine is a homemade, high alcohol content liquor that has a long history in many countries across the world, but especially in the American south. The illegal nature of the drink caused many distillers and smugglers to work at night to avoid detection, thus the word ""moonshine", since it was produced by the light of the moon.

Mountain folk know how to party, and many a fantastic bluegrass record has been made with white lighting as the fuel.

This playlist features 21 songs about, or that feature moonshine prominently. I have limited the list to include only roots music -- bluegrass, folk, country, alt-country, old-time and blues help keep a working class continuity, which fits the subject matter nicely.

Being from North Carolina, it doesn't take me long to get into the heart of moonshine country, and if you've ever taken a swig of this stuff you know how powerful it can be. It hurts at first, but once you get your first mason jar down

  • This is the most heart-wrenching playlist I have ever posted. An article I stumbled upon two years ago in the Washington Post highlighted the emergence of the playlist as the next wave in music and references the Gartner study on the subject.

But is was one particular playlist mentioned that really grabbed me.

The article introduced me to Justine Saylors who lost her beautiful 14-year old son Lance to cancer. She turned to the playlist as a way to help her cope with what is the most difficult thing we can face as human beings, the loss of a child. Her playlists also provided a way for her to connect with others.

As you listen to the songs in this playlist and read Lance's memoriam on Caringbridge.org you may find yourself overcome with emotion to the point of tears. Every song, whether you like them or not, is magnified 100 times by the context in which the list was put together. Each one takes on new meaning and becomes a powerful force.

This is the power of the playlist at it's

  • The number of singles that have sold over 10 million copies are part of an exclusive club, and lucky for us, there is a large percentage of them available. Of course, the Beatles are not represented here as their music is not available online anywhere legally.

Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" has the distinct honor of selling in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. That's a staggering number. It continues to sell each year, and is the standard by which Christmas music is judged. The huge market for Christmas music may explain why every artist under the sun feels the need to make Christmas record.

The next closest record to "White Christmas" in sales, is Elton John's remake of his own song "Candle in the Wind". He rerecorded it in 1997 with lyrics commemorating the life of the then recently passed Princess Diana, as opposed to the original version, which honored Marilyn Monroe. This record struck a chord across the world and sold over 35 million copies. The first performance of this

  • The 1980s was a big decade for music. It kicked off with people being fed up with disco and ended after giving birth to hip hop, new wave, pop metal, alternative rock, synth pop, thrash metal, house music and MTV.

MTV became an incredible vehicle for artists to get their music out to the masses in the 80s and ended up making and/or breaking the careers of many. When people think about the music of this decade they undoubtedly think of bands that were played on MTV.

And while much of the spotlight was taken by male-centric bands who dressed like girls, female artists made gigantic contributions to popular music during the decade.

For this playlist I wanted to focus on some of the most influential female musicians to make a mark in the 1980's. So you won't find Michael Jackson, Poison or Run DMC, but you will find 40 artists whose contributions are critically important -- and every one is a female solo artist or a band with a female member.

Hopefully this playlist brings back some

  • I'm on a random playlist binge today. And this one highlights how the digital age is allowing music to be connected in more ways than ever before.

Case in point, songs that mention "rubber".

This may be the first (and last?) playlist ever created that is figuratively held together by elastic hydrocarbon polymer.  Maybe the Rubber Manufactures Association will have a use for it? Or maybe it can find a home as background music for you're next rubber fetish party?

No? Well, if rubber doesn't have any significance to you, don't fret, this playlist is actually extremely listenable and contains such respected artists as The Spinners, The Blues Brothers, David Bowie, The Stooges, The Smiths,  John Mayall, The Cyrkle, Bootsy Collins, The Gap Band and many more.

    So get bouncing!

    Ode To Rubber Playlist

    1. The Rubberband Man - The Spinners

    2. Rubber Biscuit (Live Version) - The Blues Brothers

    3. Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me) - The Gap Band

    4. Red Rubber Ball - The Cyrkle

    5. Rubber Band

  • Serial killers are a subject of great fascination in America. There are scores of best selling books and box office hits based on these abominations of society. Their popularity is fueled by both a natural morbid curiosity and the desire to be scared just for the thrill of it. A serial killer is defined as someone who has perpetrated multiple murders with the victims usually being unknown to the killer. The phrase "serial killer" first appeared in the in the 1970s and is credited to either Robert Ressler (FBI) or Dr. Robert Keppel (arguments exist on who actually coined the term). It was meant to help distinguish murderers who claim victims over a long period of time from those who claim multiple victims at once (mass murderers). A third type of multi-person killer is a spree killer.

Serial killers usually have a "cooling-off" period in between killings and many times lead what appears to be a normal life. Indeed, this is probably another reason why they fascinate us. Sexual

  • A couple of years ago I asked knowledgeable friends involved with he music business what they felt was "the best cover song ever recorded." Responses came in from music blogs, radio DJs and publicists. This is the resulting playlist -- a compilation of the selections received for the very best cover songs ever recorded. Please add your own picks to the comments.

Please note: Many of the cover versions are not available online for streaming, so the playlist consists of the original versions, but DO check out the cover versions if you get a chance.

  • New York City, officially the "City of New York" is without a doubt, one of the most important, if not THE most important cities in the world. NYC is a leader in both business and culture, and is a place where dreams come true, or where dreams can be destroyed.

As Frank said, "If you can make it here, you'll make it anywhere".

Hip hop culture has a strong connection to the city. After all, the genre was born from the block parties of the South Bronx in the 1970s. The Big Apple is the place where hip hop was forged, developed and fine-tuned, and was the launching pad for what would become one of the most popular forms of popular music in the world.

With over 19.7 million people living in the New York metropolitan area, it's the most populous metropolitan area in the United States and the 4th most populous in the world after Tokyo, Seoul and Mexico City.

I thought it only fitting to create a playlist of hip hop songs that pay homage to the place where the genre was born.

  • According to Amnesty International, more than 1,145 people from 23 countries were executed in 2003. In America, there have been 956 executions since 1976 when the death penalty was reinstated. There have also been over 100 people released from death row over this same period, due to evidence of innocence being discovered. In the year 2000 Gov. George Ryan made Illinois the first of 38 U.S. states with capital punishment to impose a moratorium on executions after the state released 13 death row inmates who were wrongly convicted.

The death penalty continues to be something that divides many people around the world. Wherever you stand on the issue though, there is no denying that the subject makes for powerful art. Many books, songs and films have been produced about capital punishment and the horrible anguish felt by criminals, victims and the families.

The idea of someone sitting in a cell with the knowledge that they will be killed at daybreak makes for poignant storytelling. Over
