  • The accordion is a reed instrument, but unlike most reed instruments, it's played by pushing and pulling instead of blowing. The force of air through the instrument vibrates a reed and makes sound. Some think that a primitive accordion-like instrument was played in ancient Egypt.

    The first modern accordion was invented by Cyrillus Damian in Vienna, circa 1829. It was a simple button accordion that had only 7 notes of a major scale, so it played in only one key, like a harmonica. These are still played today, especially in Cajun music where the accordion contributes greatly to the genre's signature sound.

    The popular "piano accordion" was developed in the late 1800s. It consists of a bellows, a piano keyboard on the right and a series of buttons on the left, which are used to play bass notes and chords.

  • The huge Americana music festival Merlefest 2008 is taking place this weekend in Wilkesboro, NC. I attended my first Merlefest two years ago. I thought I would re-publish the experience I had in 2006 here on Yahoo Music for those planning to attend or thinking of attending. It's an event not to be missed.

    I'm back from my first MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC, which I attended with my lovely wife, her sister Caroline, and my good friends: Joel, Keith, and Lauren. I must say, it was an experience I will remember for a long time to come. In fact, MerleFest will now be a planned yearly event for my friends and I. If you're not familiar, the festival was started in 1988 as a one-night-only tribute concert to the late Merle Watson, the talented son of the legendary Doc Watson. Merle died three years earlier in a tragic tractor accident, but this springtime music celebration has helped make Merle Watson a name that will live forever.

    Hayes Carll has delivered my favorite Americana record of 2008 to date with Trouble In Mind. This is the Texas songwriter's third full-length release and his first with a major label (Universal's Lost Highway). His wit-filled lyrics, and delivery are akin to an artist like Steve Earle, but the sound is more traditional country twang. The last track, "She Left Me For Jesus", is a hilarious romp that should not be missed. The album contains 13 originals and one Tom Waits cover, which earns the record extra credit on an already flawless performance.

  • Musicians, artists and writers have a world-wide reputation for eccentricity. As Oscar Levant so famously said, "there's a fine line between genius and insanity."

    In order to create great art the artist must be outside of the norms. So before I get into my top picks for "weirdest musicians" I want to make it quite clear that being "weird" is not in itself a bad thing. Weirdness is just behavior that the majority of the population finds foreign, unnatural or strange.

    In some cases weirdness can be a bad thing -- For example, if I ran around a shopping mall slapping old ladies across the face while screaming profanities, you could not only classify my behavior as weird, you could also classify it as a crime. On the other hand, if I spent my days collecting cigarette butts from the ground and gluing them together into sculptures that bring attention to the dangers of smoking, I may be considered weird, but in this case, the end result is positive.   • There were 6,328,000 car accidents in 2003. These accounted for 2.9 million injuries and 42,643 deaths related to auto crashes. Almost 60 percent of children, age 14 and under, who die in motor vehicle accidents were unrestrained. So buckle yourself and your kids up! This playlist contains songs about car accidents. For one, if you write 666 in Roman numerals you will see that it contains the first five Roman numerals in descending order. i.e.:DCLXVI (D = 500, C = 100, L = 50, X = 10, V = 5, I = 1)= 666.
