  • Party girls don't have the best reputation. They arrive at the club like the run the place, always throwing caution to the wind. Their behavior has earned them a bad reputation, so why then, do they attract men like flies? I think the answer to the question is obvious, but let's look on the bright side. When a party girl arrives on the scene it's as if a big piece of meat was thrown into the aquarium at feeding time. All the sharks instantly move in for the kill. Those not on top of food chain get the benefit of being shark-free, but not only that, it's just plain entertaining to watch the circling sharks clumsily position themselves.

As you would expect, musicians have let their feelings known about the party girl. Some warn about falling into the lifestyle, while others celebrate it like so many circling sharks.

For this playlist I've decided not to select songs about specifically named party girls, but instead have chosen only songs with the words "party" and "girl" in the title.

Below is the resulting 16 track playlist.

  • There is no denying that San Francisco is one of the world's heavyweight cities when it comes to the creative arts, especially music. This beautiful American metro area has produced hundreds of successful bands, and is a must-stop location for any serious artist on tour.

Although San Francisco has given birth to bands from a wide variety of genres, it's probably best known for the psychedelic movement of the 1960s that was ground zero for the hippy movement.

San Francisco is a big place, so for this playlist I wanted to narrow it down a bit. To build the list, I've selected one track from a band that was formed in the 1960s, but only those who emerged from the San Francisco Peninsula/North Bay area. You could create different lists using the East Bay or South Bay areas of the city.

Even with this limitation, this playlist still contains 22 songs by 22 different artists from the 1960s. As you would expect, it's rife with psychedelia and garage rock.

So step back in time and enjoy, no TARDIS needed.

  • For most people, summer ends once school starts, but this year the official last day of summer isn't until next week; September 21st. The end of summer has a long history in popular culture as the season traditionally represents all things good. The weather is warm, school is out, and love blooms.

Summer is also representative of youth, the best times of our lives, with spring representing childhood, autumn representing middle age, and winter representing old age. So the end of summer is a drag.

There are thousands of songs that refer to the end of summer, whether real or as a metaphor.

For this playlist I've put together a group of songs that you can say goodbye to summer with. Hope you had a great one!

  • The EaglesTo this day, no band has been able to blend the genres of rock and country music into the kind of success that the Eagles have achieved. The band has earned six Grammy awards and six number one albums during their career, and their compilation, Their Greatest Hits (1971—1975), is tied with Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best selling album of all time in the United States, with just under 30 million copies sold.

The Eagles got their start when four members of Linda Ronstadt's back-up band (Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner & Bernie Leadon) singed with David Geffen to release an album on Geffen's brand new label, Asylum Records. The debut album spawned three hit singles and the band was off and running.

The band would go on to become an international sensation and are classic rock radio staples to this day.

For this playlist I've selected songs released on solo albums of Eagles members, as well as tracks by other bands they have been a part of.

If you're a fan of the Eagles this is a playlist you should not miss.

  • If you've made a visit to Google in the past couple days you probably noticed the cool interactive Star Trek Google Doodle. Although I've seen Doodles that let you play little games, this is the first time I have seen one of this kind. You can click around to trigger sound effects from the original series, use the transporter, and even fight an alien.  Google has created the Doodle to recognize the 46th anniversary of the series.

I did not become a fan of Star Trek until The Next Generation, and although I would not consider myself a "Trekkie", I do really enjoy the show and its premise. There is no denying that the series has had a huge impact on popular culture. In fact, Star Trek is responsible for a whole subset of geek culture that endures to this day, and shows no sign of slowing down.

I thought I would join in the celebration with this playlist of a dozen songs inspired by Star Trek.

This playlist only scratches the surface, so tell me, what would be on your Star Trek-themed list?

  • As you may have noticed, the Y! Music Playlist blog has been on hiatus for a while. This is actually due to some good news! As you may have heard, Yahoo! has a new partnership with Spotify, the music streaming service from Sweden that is taking the world by storm.

As you would expect, the playlists included here will now be Spotify playlists. This is great news since I can now embed a Spotify player right in each blog post, and you'll even be able to listen without being a premium Spotify member. Although as a premium member you won't be presented with ads between songs.

I'm getting ready for a trip to Germany this week and so it is Germany that's inspired this, my first Spotify playlist for the Y! Music Playlist blog. I decided to build a playlist of all the #1 songs in Germany on the year is was born. I was surprised to see more English language songs than those sung in German.

Now, who can make some local food and site suggestions for the Rhine Valley?

  • happyLast week, I published a playlist of "Happy Songs". To build it, I selected popular songs titled "Happy".  This week I wanted to continue with the theme.

Music has a powerfully ability to connect with people on an emotional level.  But the most moving songs usually have nothing to do with the lyrics or even the skill of the musicians. Emotionally powerful songs hit hardest when the performer is feeling it. Emotions can indeed be transmitted through sound waves with the right broadcaster and receiver. This is pretty incredible when you think about it.

The gambit of human emotion has been expressed through song, and if I had to pick the emotion that is most difficult to convey I would have to go with happiness. It's just hard create a "happy" song without coming off as sappy. But when your feeling good nothing can compliment a positive moment better.

For this list I thought about songs with a happy theme, but I chose to use the top 10 most sickeningly happy songs that came to my mind first. These are songs that, without any doubt, are tapped into good feelings.

There are a lot of positive vibes to go around in this playlist. If you're in a good mood, you'll love it. If you're not, you may find it "sickening".

    I hope it's the former.

What would be on your list of Sickeningly Happy Songs?

  • No American city has been hit harder by the current economic downturn more than Detroit. But the resurgence of the American automobile industry is offering a glimpse of hope for this iconic city.

In addition to being an automobile city, Detroit is also a huge music city. From the blues, to jazz, to rock and roll, to its world famous Motown sound, the Motor City is one of the most important music cities in the world. Some of the artists who were born in, or emerged from Detroit include Aretha Franklin, Cece and BeBe Winans, Milt Jackson, Suzi Quatro, Madonna, The Four Tops, The Spinners, George Clinton, Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Jack White, MC5, Bob Seger, Ted Nugent and Kid Rock. And this is just a smattering of the talent Detroit has given us.

For this playlist I have included 26 songs that pay homage to Detroit. May she rise to her former glory as soon as possible.

What would you add to your Detroit playlist?

  • 2918901_170x170From time to time I check to see what the current most critically acclaimed albums are according to Metacritic, and I give them a listen. Metacritic is my go to review site. But they don't do their own reviews. Instead, they collect new album reviews  from across the web and average them. This way you can easily see which records have a consensus of critical acclaim.

I find Metacritic's top album list one of the best anywhere, and I can always refer to it to find something new.

For this playlist I looked at the site's top rated albums and selected a single song from the first 10 that are available for streaming on Rhapsody. This way you can check out what the critics are buzzing about for yourself.

    I did not include reissues.

  • After doing a playlist of songs about sad songs, I thought I would reverse course and put together something a bit more upbeat.

Of course, there are millions of happy songs to choose from, which means that you could spend a lifetime doing nothing but creating "happy" song playlists. I don't have that kind of time.

The best happy songs are not just lyrically happy, but also incorporate upbeat rhythms and chord progressions that make you smile. But for this playlist, instead of sifting through millions of happy songs, I looked for songs named "Happy".  Songs with the word "happy" in the title were excluded if any other word appears, I did this mainly so I would not have to hear "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or "Shiny Happy People" again. It took me a decade to get over those songs.

Instead, you will find a rather interesting 10 song playlist that includes only "happy" songs.

    What did I miss?
