The Y! Music Playlist Blog
  • We've been putting playlists together by subject for a while here at the Y! Radish, and although songs linked by theme (Rain, Fire, Love, Food, Cars, etc) will always be fun to create, many times they are inconsistent in regards to genre and mood. When you focus themed lists by genre, they become more targeted and listenable. This example takes hundreds of songs about fire and filters it down to a manageable number of quality songs that all fall into the "Classic Rock" genre.

Sometimes when I'm hanging out with friends I'll put on a themed playlist like this and about five songs into it ask, "Do you know what the theme of this playlist is?" It always creates a fun game for guests to play with the music they're listening to and never fails to spur some good conversation.

Fire is a powerful metaphor that a writer can use to represent power, destruction, danger, sexuality or even renewal and passion. So even if you don't use this playlist at your next get together, give it a spin and

  • I have always been torn about the concept of "Earth Day". On one hand it brings environmental issues to the forefront and gets the message out to those who may not have been paying attention. But on the other hand it cheapens environmental responsibility by compressing what should be practiced all year into a single day. And driving to an Earth Day event to consume and create trash once a year doesn't exactly get to the heart of the matter.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 and falls on April 22nd in America each year. It has grown in popularity over the decades and is now even celebrated by "light green" environmentalists who may volunteer for a clean up, donate to an environmental cause, or simply make a renewed pledge to live more gently.

Being that artistic types tend to be more in tune with environmental issues than the population at large, it's no surprise that many environmental songs have made their way into the popular culture. Musicians have been selling green since the 1960's

  • I'll freely admit that this playlist (Songs For Dentists) is an odd one that only a small group of folks will appreciate, but isn't this exactly the kind of fringe benefit digital music affords? You see, a record company would be crazy to produce a compilation album like "Songs For Dentists" or "Songs About Tofu", but with the advent of celestial digital music jukeboxes like Rhapsody and Yahoo Music, playlists can be created, produced and distributed at little to no cost. By the way, this is exactly what this blog is all about. Need a playlist about urination, baseball, rainbows, cars, dirt, marijuana? If we don't have it just check back later. As more playlist blogs and communities turn up, you'll be able to quickly and painlessly find the soundtrack for just about any event imaginable. From an Aardvark convention to a Zodiac themed party, you'll be covered. Do a quick search, click on a link and the music starts streaming in real time.

This leads me to this playlist, which is

    -Mr. White (Reservoir Dogs)

The Waiter (masculine) and the Waitress (feminine) get their names because they "Wait" on hungry and / or thirsty customers. From the low-end greasy spoon to high-end 5 star restaurants, the waiter's job can run the gambit from a teenager's summertime gig to a real career.

The maître d' or "literally "master of the hall", is the top job position for a waitstaff professional. They will only be found in the world's finest restaurants. The maître d' manages waitstaff, handles seating and are usually distinguished by a formal white apron that extends to the ankle. Although the average wage for a waitstaff employee in America was just $14,050 per year in 2004, tips can add a whole lot of easily "unreportable" income. If you provide good service tips can help you pull

  • Pachelbel's Canon In D Major is one of the most popular songs played at weddings across the nation and the world, second only to the Wedding March. There's no denying that the composition's simplicity and memorable repetitive hook help classify Pachelbel as the original "one hit wonder."

Originally composed by Johann Pachelbel in 1680 as a piece of chamber music meant for a string quartet -- Canon in D Major has since been rearranged for a wide variety of ensembles, the work's instantly recognizable and heavenly chord progression has even been re-worked successfully in rock music.

    Some would say too much.

This playlist starts with a traditional recording of Pachelbel's Canon and is followed by 9 songs which are based on the Canon or sample it. Surely there are more popular songs that steal heavily from the Canon, so please add any you are aware of to the comments.

  • The Moon has inspired mankind from the very beginning of our existence. Although the word "moon" can represent any natural satellite that orbits a planet, when we talk about "The Moon" we are speaking of the only Earth orbiting celestial body, sometimes called "Luna". The Moon is about 384,500 kilometers (238,930 miles) from the Earth and has a diameter of 3,476 kilometres (2,160 miles).

It has a synchronous rotation with Earth, which means that one side of the Moon (the "near side") is permanently turned towards Earth. The other side is of course, "The Dark Side of The Moon". I think we're all familiar with the album of the same name by Pink Floyd, which also has the distinciton of being the album that has spent the most time on the Billboard charts.

The fascination with the Moon started long before Pink Floyd. It has been the inspiration for poetry, paintings, songs and even whole religions over the history of man. Humans have looked upon the moon and pondered it, as well as our

  • Lilith Fair was a female-centric music festival that was produced for three years running in the late 1990's (1997, 1998 and 1999). The festival was founded by musician Sarah McLachlan after she was insulted by a music industry that refused to give female artists the credit and respect they deserved.

Also referred to in some circles as Girlapalooza, Lesbopalooza and Breast-fest, Lilith Fair was named after Lilith, a mythological female demon, sometimes referred to as Adam's first wife.

The festival was a big deal at the time, and although the artists featured spanned many genres and styles, they were all bound by their common sisterhood.

This playlist features a double-cd set of songs by artists who were part of the Lilith Fair festival a decade ago.

  • Being that Ireland is surrounded by the sea, it's no wonder that the seafaring life has inspired a myriad of Irish songwriters. This playlist looks at Celtic music about, or inspired in some way by the ocean. From tales of immigration on cramped ships, to working the sea for survival, to general ocean-centric odes and sea shanties. This 20 track playlist features both traditional and contemporary Celtic artists -- including The Chieftains, The Pogues, Boys Of The Lough, Planxty, The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, De Dannan, Sharon Knight, Altan, The Irish Rovers and more.

There is something appealing about the old salt who faces enormous hardships working on ships at sea for months or years at a time. The reality is however, no matter how beautiful the ocean is, a life at sea is a hard one -- unless you're working on a cruise ship. I will choose to keep my romanticized version of the sea and this playlist is a good start.

I've been wanting to do a playlist like this for a long time, but the time required has kept me from jumping in. Well, I finally threw caution to the wind and built my first "road trip playlist". It's not merely a group of songs about the road, but is instead a collection of songs that synch up with a planned route. In this case, the route is one I take often between my new home and my old one. The 3 hour drive from Charlotte, NC to Charleston, SC. The songs in the playlist are timed against the route and will tell you something about the area you happen to be driving through at the time.

I make the assumption that you follow the route as drawn by Yahoo! Maps and that your speed is about 80 miles per hour, which seems to be the accepted number on I-77 and I-26. Of course, I do not promote going over the speed limit, so the fast forward on your subscription ready device will come in handy if you're not a law breaker.

We start our playlist in uptown Charlotte, NC. After you get into

  •  Van Morrison - Keep It Simple

62-year old Irish legend Van Morrison still has an overabundance of soul, his 33rd full-length studio album, titled Keep It Simple, has everything you want in a Van Morrison album. Van's soulful vocals steal the show, as they should, but are supported by tasteful and masterful instrumentation that's low on flash, but high on feeling. If you focus on details you'll be wowed by the gospel-tinged backing vocals, a perfect B3 underline, a melodic guitar riff,  a warm steel pedal, a heartfelt lyric, or any number of other elements that never bring too much attention to themselves. However, the brilliance here is how every ingredient comes together to create not just a great song or even a great album, but a great experience — something that will stick with you. The third song on the album is titled "That's Entrainment" and I must admit I had to look the word up. Entrainment is a "physics phenomenon of resonance, first observed in the 17th century. It's
