The Y! Music Playlist Blog
  • From late February to late April many of our fine institutions of higher learning stop classes for what is known as "spring break".

During this time many students separate themselves from the books and travel to tropical destinations. Once on location they partake in ritualistic rites of passage that usually include dancing, alcohol, drugs and fornication.

Since music is a big part of spring break I thought I would take a stab at creating the ultimate spring break party mix. In order to do it I first had to take off my critic hat. After all, spring break is not about analyzing or intellectual honesty -- it's about throwing inhibitions to the wind and having fun. So the 50 songs selected for this list are infectiously hedonistic.

Genre was not considered so you'll find tracks from across the spectrum of popular music, but each one will instill a strong desire to dance, drink, laugh, or hump.

In other words, no spring break is complete without songs like those found in this

  • The automobile has been a symbol of status, freedom and power for as long as we've been driving them. So it's no surprise that the car has been immortalized in song. For this playlist I focused on a genre that has produced a plethora of timeless car songs -- Classic Rock.

Now a few points I would like to make about the selection parameters before I get the inevitable comments like "HOW COULD YOU LEAVE OUT 'Motorbreath' by Metallica you idiot!".

    1. SONG AVAILABILITY: If a song is not available at the time I created this playlist it is not included here. What makes a playlist column valuable is the fact that you can click the play button and listen to the songs in full, not just :30 samples. So, this rule automatically excludes worthy songs like "Baby You Can Drive My Car" by the Beatles and "Low Rider" by War.

    2. GENRE: It had to be classic rock, no other genre was considered. Now I understand that many songs skirt the edges of the genre. So in some cases I chose to include borderline

  • Over the last decade or so, car companies have become known for launching the careers of musicians whose music is featured in their television ad campaigns and for reviving interest in older bands. In fact, its almost automatic that songs featured in a good TV ad can expect to see big increases in popularity and sales. This playlist features 18 tracks that have been used by Mitsubishi Motors in 18 memorable TV commercials.

Mitsubishi is a Japanese conglomerate that was founded in 1870 as a shipping company, it has since grown to include over 500 Mitsubishi Group companies employing over 50,000 people across the globe.

The name Mitsubishi comes from the Japanese words Mitsu, which means three and Hishi, which means water chestnut, but is also used to denote a diamond shape. This is why the company's logo is a set of 3 diamonds.

You have certainly used a Mistubishi product sometime in your life as their core member companys produce Kirin Beer, 3 Diamond Seafood, Nikon cameras, Nippon

  • "Jungle Boogie" is a funk song recorded by Kool & the Gang for their 1973 album Wild and Peaceful.

The song soared to the top ten as a single and became hugely popular in dance clubs across the country. It's spoken lead vocal was performed by the band's roadie Don Boyce and an instrumental version of the tune with an overdubbed flute part and additional percussion instruments titled "Jungle Jazz" appeared on the album Spirit of the Boogie.

"Jungle Boogie" has been repeatedly sampled on songs including the The Beastie Boys' 1989 release "Hey Ladies", Madonna's 1992 top ten hit "Erotica" and Janet Jackson's 1994 top ten single "You Want This".  Hip-hop artists have used the song's infectious beat to provide the foundation for countless tracks.

This playlist starts with the original Kool & The Gang version of "Jungle Boogie" and is followed by 13 more songs that sample it including the three previously mentioned.

  •  Or, The Whale - Light Poles And Pines

I was instantly intrigued by the band Or, The Whale because of my love for Melville's classic Moby Dick or, The Whale. I spent a good deal of time in New Bedford, Ma., the location of the fictitious Spouter Inn and Moby Dick is flat out my favorite book of all time.

The 7-member band Or, The Whale hail from San Francisco and have produced an imminently enjoyable record rooted in Americana. The musicianship, harmonies and melodies will instantly put a glide in your step. The production is clean and simple, and the album's rootsy sound is happy and upbeat. This music will make you want to gather your friends together and hitchhike across America -- If only America was as warm and beautiful as Light Poles And Pines.

     Hysterics - Hysterics

Oliver Ignatius is the main songwriter of the Brooklyn band Hysterics. And according to the liner notes Oliver loves Brian Wilson, Richard Manuel and The Beatles. Not bad influences for any songwriter to have, but

  • I have a bad habit of throwing the word "idiot" around when I encounter bad drivers in traffic, or when I disagree with the talking heads on cable news networks. Sure, there are more offensive words I could use, but now that I have two small impressionable children to mold I clearly understand how my words impact them. I don't want my kids developing my bad habits -- and using the word "idiot" in anger is a bad habit.

But even as I work on eliminating the word from my vocabulary I do understand it has its place. The word is of Greek origin and was originally used to describe someone with poor knowledge of politics, or someone who is unable to reason. In modern times it came to be associated with the developmentally challenged and eventually crossed over to include the foolish as well as the stupid.

We could call someone with a low IQ an idiot, but we could also call the college student jumping off of his dorm room balcony into the pool below an idiot.

Since the word  "idiot" is so

  • Only 11 songs have the distinct privilege of making it to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1993. This is mainly due to 3 female pop singers who dominated the top spot for a combined 27 weeks during the course of the year. Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey ruled the charts in 1993, but do you remember Snow, Silk and SWV? Well, if these artists don't ring a bell, give this playlist a spin and I bet you'll remember the songs when you hear them.

    Some music news from 1993:

-Lisa Bonet filed for divorce from Lenny Kravitz

    - The British band Oasis was discovered by record executive Alan McGGhee at the nightclub King Tut's in Glasgow

-Prince changes his name to an unpronounceable symbol

    -The Velvet Underground break up

    - Frank Zappa dies of prostate cancer

-10,000 Maniacs loose their lead singer Natalie Merchant to a solo career

-The Backstreet Boys, Blonde Redhead, Daft Punk, Korn, Low, Modest Mouse, Nada Surf, The Spice Girls, Third Eye Blind and Wu-Tang

  • Last week, Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan proclaimed that his band has won the opening spot on the much hyped Led Zeppelin reunion tour.

I have mixed feeling on a Zeppelin reunion. For one, the band was all about energy, power, youth and sexuality. Things the older band members simply won't be able to deliver the way they did 35 years ago. However, I would love to see them succeed, and they have certainly earned their place in rock history despite a documented record of plagiarism.

Robert Plant continues to turn out fantastic solo albums and side projects, so why switch gears? Well, a Zep reunion would bring in massive amounts of cash.

I admit that it would be a blast to attend a Led Zeppelin reunion concert, but sometimes reliving your youth is just not a good decision. It's better to let the last memories of Led Zeppelin be images of the band at their peak.

Along with the Beatles, Led Zeppelin is the biggest gap in music subscription services. Maybe one day we can get the

  • Holiday music is a very small percentage of overall music sales. And Christmas music is by far the largest part of this relatively small slice. Halloween has its fair share of music, as does St. Patrick's Day, but for Easter music you really have to dig deep.

This playlist starts with the two most popular Easter time songs in history, "Peter Cottontail" and "Easter Parade", but is followed by 17 more tracks, which can be linked to Easter in some way, both secular and religious.

This year, Easter falls of March 23, which is unusually early and also happens to be my daughter's birthday. The way in which the date is calculated is complicated and the full cycle repeats only once every 5,700,000 years. There are 35 possible dates on which Easter Sunday can fall, the earliest being March 22. Easter will not fall on March 23rd again until 2160.

What songs would you add to an Easter playlist? Please add your ideas to the comments.

  • In 1994 a movie trivia game was developed by three Albright college students. The game would start with one person naming an actor with the other players trying to connect the selected thespian to Kevin Bacon.

The number of movies separating an actor from Kevin Bacon would be their "Bacon Number".  So, for example Elvis Presley has a Bacon number of 2.

1-Elvis Presley was in Harum Scarum (1965) with Suzanne Covington
2-Suzanne Covington was in Beauty Shop (2005) with Kevin Bacon

Supposedly you can connect almost any actor to Bacon in 6 degrees. Heck, even I'm connected to him in 2. I appeared as a extra in the film Major League 3 (1998) with Scott Bakula -- Scott Bakula appeared with John Cho in American Beauty (1999) -- and John Cho appeared with Kevin Bacon in The Air That I Breathe (2007)

Anyway, since musicians tend to appear in films from time to time and Kevin Bacon has a musical project in The Bacon Brothers, I thought it would be fun to do a playlist connecting musicans who

By Todd Cunningham LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Iron Man 3" was soaring past $1 billion at the worldwide box office Thursday, in a display of world domination that would make one of Marvel's super villains proud. The box-office bounty - roughly $700 million from abroad and $300 million domestically - is a major triumph for Disney, which bet big on comic book superheroes when it bought Marvel Studios for $4 billion in 2009. And its decision to bring aboard a Chinese partner for "Iron Man 3" and focus the Disney marketing machine on the booming foreign market looks pretty good right now, too. ...
